Jedi Knight II. Thermal Detonators sure are neat.

Wow, did I really put up with this kind of non-sense in Dark Forces II? I have been playing Jedi Knight II while home sick and wow it just strikes me as the most horrible game I've ever played recently (last two or three years). Lightsaber throw was fun for about 5 seconds but that was it; a lightsaber mod for HL2 or UT2k7 or something would be worlds better than this load of crock:

-Mind-numbing enemies: 3 character models must've really broke Lucas' bank. Is that why he needed to release the "prequels?" No AI to speak of either.

-Tediousness +eleventy-billion: See that ship? No, you don't get to fly it. First, you must search the entire level for some hidden fuel pump controls. Yeah, because people put everyday things like fuel pump controls in hidden places. Then, instead of matching the symbols to the fuel pumps that aren't yet operating, you have to match the fuel symbols to the pumps that are already operating. Yeah, because we like to make no logical sense to give the game's "alien setting" more relevance. Devs on this game had an IQ of at least 10. Combined. Worst puzzles ever...

-Lightsaber antics: Why can I never hit anything with my lightsaber, when it's right in front of me? It just dodges. Man, Obi-Wan Kenobi could've lived a lot longer if that were really the case. "Ooh, you're swinging your lightsaber at me? Well, let me just nonchalantly take advantage of horrible collision detection and calmly teleport 2 steps to the side instantly using a secret -noclip cheat that everyone knows.

-Horrid story: It's horrid. That's all there is to say.

-Not feeling the tie-in to Star Wars: There's only so much that John Williams' score can do to make you feel like you're in the Star Wars universe. Frankly, I felt more like I was in a Star Wars setting last time I went to Wal-Mart. (Which doesn't speak highly of the patrons.)

-Level design by an HVAC technician: Apparently, long ago (not in our galaxy either), the only way to get anywhere was to crawl through HVAC ventilation shafts and maintenance hallways. Also, apparently, each planet contained 1 habitable room and the rest of the infrastructure was HVAC rooms and equipment (also, computers and mini-fridge-shaped robots that said "gonk" a lot. Actually, I think they were saying "Bonk" as in "You should play Bonk's Adventure it's a much better game and the design is Einstein next to this horrid pile of poo). Also, there is no rhyme or reason to the level design: why would I think to go left through that wall that doesn't look like a door, when that thing over there that looks like a door doesn't open. And even though I think it should be unlocked somehow, no, it never is it's just there for looks and how should I know which doors I need to unlock and which I don't? Argh!!

I know this game came out awhile ago, but I'm just now getting a chance to really try it out and wow I can't believe that it was received as anything other than the most horrid excuse for a Star Wars game ever. Is it just an old game, or is it really this horrible? I played through quite a bit of Dark Forces II again a couple years ago and in no way remember it being this horrible. In fact, I only quit because I got stuck; otherwise, I enjoyed playing it. Is this game really this bad, or am I just somehow jaded? Anyways, I uninstalled it. Normally I have a bit of fun with codes & god modes in games like this but this isn't even worth it.

This game should be called "HVAC Knight II."

I'm a bit confused. Are you complaining about Jedi Knight II or Dark Forces II? Dark Forces II - Jedi Knight is still pretty good, while I can understand the dislike for Jedi Knight II, as a terrible game it was indeed. Jedi Academy was kinda fun in multiplayer but that was about it.

To clarify for anyone who doesn't know:

Dark Forces -> Dark Forces II - Jedi Knight -> Jedi Knight II (the Quake 3 engine one) -> Jedi Academy

Sorry, yes the nomenclature of these games is a bit confusing indeed! I am writing about Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. (Which should have just been called Dark Forces III...) I looked it up on Gamerankings.com just to see and the PC version scored an 85%. The professional reviews were all right up there also, with many 8.5/10 or greater reviews. Amazing...

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 17, 2008 01:49 PM

Yeah, I strangely remember quite a few magazines praising it, when it was even by regular FPS standards pretty crappy. Not even the dismemberment mod made it fun enough. And don't get me started on those platforming sections.

It is my theory that more crap FPS games were created on the Quake 3 engine than on the Quake 2 engine.

Incidentally, Edge gave Jedi Knight II a 6/10 if I remember correctly, much to everyone's apparent surprise.

speculative Mar 17, 2008 01:53 PM

Ah! Quake 3 engine? That would explain it. I was never a fan of Quake 3; I always favored the Unreal engine games. I knew there was something strangely unresponsive about the characters movement and jumping, and now I know why.

Could also be put in terms of greater-than and less-than...

Dark Forces > DF2: Jedi Knight > JK2: Jedi Outcast < JK3: Jedi Academy.

Original Dark Forces was an absolutely incredible FPS, and Jedi Knight is still one of my favorite games to play multiplayer.

Back to the topic at hand!

I remember enjoying Jedi Knight 2 for about an hour, but by that time I was so far through the game I decided I had to just finish it. So I used all the cheat codes and barrelled my way through it so I didn't have to bother with mind-numbing level designs and "characters." I didn't even dare touch JK3 after that experience.

However, I think there is one good game created from the Quake3 engine. Nexuiz. If you don't have this game, download it now. It's free, it's pretty, it's awesome, and the weapons are incredibly well-balanced and creative.

Jedi Knight 2 being Jedi Outcast? I loved that game. The lightsaber duals were entertaining =o Jedi Academy, now there was a big steaming pile of shit.

Jedi Outcast's thing that pissed me off was hitting enemies with guns. Prior to regaining your lightsaber, the game is a fucking chore. Enemy models are, well, pretty skinny and they LOVE side-stepping like nuts.

Jedi Outcast is a fun game if ignore the plot. The same goes for Academy.

Sorry if not every game is some crappy popular thing like Halo or Half-Life.

Matt Mar 17, 2008 10:29 PM

Jedi Academy was pretty fun, but fuckin 'A, JK 2 was a blast.
I loved that game, I totally ate it up. I used to play lightsaber deathmatches with a few guys in my computer class at the time and it was fun. Oh so fun.

Anyways, if you actually played it back then when it came out it was pretty awesome fare for an FPS.

Diversion Mar 17, 2008 10:40 PM

Looking back on it now, JK2 wouldn't be as fun, but I remember the hype for the game and the release and I fucking LOVED it.

28Link Mar 18, 2008 02:48 PM

I was hyped for it, but didn't have a PC capable of running it until much later. Then I played it for a bit, got bored of it, and never touched it again. Same goes for Jedi Academy.

I think a misconception here is that some of you think the game was known for being a shooter. However, I think it got the prise it did because of the lightsaber combat with the added plus of force powers. I've been looking around, and it seems that the saber combat is actually quite deep, and almost analyzed like a fighting game.

Regardless, I just didn't care enough to try out these tactics and whatnot, even though I can understand why some people loved it.

I was rather surprised after reading this review. I really enjoyed the game, but then again, as I thought about it...

I was playing the game during one of those "off" periods where I really don't want any depth or complexity in a game, I just want to be able to space out for a couple hours and kill things and break things.

DFII was incredibly story-wise and I always find myself wanting to migrate back to that when I'm in the mood for something that requires a bit more involvement out of me =/.

Interesting to have a more retro gaming thread for a change. The original Dark forces was the first fps I played to death followed by Outcast then Academy, although as already mentioned certainly not for the storyline. I mainly stuck to light saber servers online since online sword battles appealed more to me then the shootouts and hell you can have a shootout on any other fps and they'd probably do it better for that matter.

Is is just me or as a recall correctly wasn't the double (one in each hand) and staff light sabers buggy as hell for 1 hit kills?

Cyrus Mar 23, 2008 03:13 AM

I once played through the Gamecube version (which wasn´t as polished as the PC counterpart) and despite the shoddy graphics and clumsy controls I happened to like it a lot. The start is pitiful but once you get your lightsaber and the force it´s quite a nice gaming experience. The Star Wars flair is really strong (I would even put it on the same level as Kotor), the Bespin episode was a real highlight to me - it felt like replaying the Luke - Vader battle in the ventilation tubes of inner Bespin.

Dark Forces, I did not like. It felt just like Doom with Star Wars bitmaps in it.

Jedi Outcast has indeed aged since 2002 but when it was released it was breathtaking in comparison to it's peers. It took the designers of this game to show the world what the Quake III engine was born for.

Hell I remember even spending ABOUT IR£300 ($500 at the time) on a GeForce3 Ti500 just to play this game on full graphics settings after the demo underperformed with a GeForce2 GTX. To this day Jedi Outcast and X-Wing: Alliance are the only games I've ever waited outside a closed store on release day for.

Yes it's story was nonsense in comparison to the sheer depth of drama delivered by it's predecessor Dark Forces II [BRING BACK FMV :)] and so it's replayability is not as assured but it excels in multiplayer even to this day especially when one grows tired of shooting at people, rocket jumping and campers. I think it's far more satisfying and honourable to challenge a friend [or enemy] to a lightsaber duel.

My 2c

If anything Jedi Knight has aged much, much worse than Jedi Outcast if simply because of the silly FMV movies.

jedi knight 2 after kotor=eww..

I tried playing jedi knight 2 after playing knights of the old republic. Graphic-wise
it was almost painful to play. I DID actually have fun playing it, but it seemed
kind of easy and monotous.
