Funny Character Names in RPG's

Many RPG's, especially older ones, allow you to shamelessly use your character's name to form crude sight gags and puns. For example, back in the day of six-letter limits on names, I would often call at least one character "Goober." A friend of mine would call them "nobody" (in lowercase) to get lines like "Hey nobody!" With the advent of spaces and other advanced techniques, names like "an asshole" become possible.

So, would any of you care to share some of your funny or irreverent RPG names? Bonus points if you have an øldskül one with a six-character limit.

I've named a main male character "Hero" before. At the time, I was young and didn't have any other names in mind.

As for seeing odd default character names in RPGs, "Butz" from Final Fantasy V still stands out.

I always thought "Wedge" was kind of a strange name in the FF universe. Why would you name someone after the shape of a tool used to prop a door open?

Dragon Quest 8's thief-turned-Hero-worshipper Yangus has a pretty strange name too, especially in comparison to his comrades Jessica and Angelo. But I guess it works out in the end because...he's getting his own game, and they're not.

i remember that i put in ff1, the fighter was yan(me) there was another called luke, han, leia, etc

Well, my friend and I had a fun idea. Navi was so annoying in N64, so we decided to choose the name, "Hey Listen!" in Legend of Zelda: Windwaker or whatever you call it.

"Hey Hey List, come here!"

"Hey List!"

The game provided many fun quirks. I suggest this name to anyone!

Fayt Linegod.

I would like to meet the total hipster who thought that was a cool name.

Ottonabs Mar 28, 2006 12:12 AM

I remember naming Aeris "Shaq." It seemed appropriate.

The first time I played Chrono Trigger, I named the characters "Coop," "Floop," "Joop," "Zoop," "Poop," "Goop," and Magus. Magus was too cool to have a retarded name.

Finally, I -ALWAYS- name the FF1 blackmage (and Vivi) "PZPZ." It is an ancient tradition dating to the early nineties, whose true origins remain a mystery.

I named EVERYONE in Final Fantasy VII "Bob". The plot was more confusing than ever..

Bob: Bob, this isn't the end.

Bob: Weren't you going to save the Planet?

Bob: Shit! Bob, you oughtta know by now.

Bob: ...That's all right. I'm not so different from you.

Bob: That's easier to understand. It's you, Bob.

Bob: So there it is, Bob. So I guess it'll be Bob, me, and...

Then I also tried naming Cloud to "God" and Barret to "Mr.T". You all should try that one day.

yangxu Apr 1, 2006 11:45 AM

Suikoden V's Fuwalafuwalu... that's one wicked name.

Summonmaster Apr 1, 2006 12:06 PM

"Master" and "Slave" work out to be hilarious name changes, as well as a whole bunch of others:
"boy!", "girl!", "filth", "trash", "scum", "you", brat", "love", "~", "<3", "=)", etc.

Lots of the names in the FF series, really made me go like "what!?":
Quistis, Rinoa, Zidane, Quina, and Yuffie in particular.

I have to say "Poo" in Earthbound takes the cake.

Now I could be wrong about this but I think it was taken from Star Wars since Wedge and Biggs are always seen together.

Once made my ex play FF VII and she named Aeris SlumDrunk, Red XIII Pussy, and Yuffi Pancakes. I like the Hey, Listen! idea

gdragon Apr 7, 2006 01:55 AM

Poo, from Earthbound is what immediately comes to mind. Oh and of course theres Teepo from Breath of Fire 3, I always found his name to be especially stupid sounding. The classic Butz from FF5, but I think they changed it to Bartz in the US release. Oh and Fayt was pretty damn bad too. There are plenty of others, but those are the most obvious... Oh and I hated Terra's japanese name too... Tina, just doesn't fit her and it reminds me of the word Tuna for some reason. >_>

As for those I renamed simply to amuse myself... I remember I named Aeris from Final Fantasy VII Butch this one time I played. I named Barret Mr. T for obvious reasons, and Cloud I just named "dude."

guyinrubbersuit Apr 7, 2006 03:07 AM

I generally just name the main character after myself. I never really got that crazy with the names as I'd be with them for many, many hours and didn't want them to detract from the story.

As far as funny default character names go, Link and Cloud always amused because who in their right mind would name their son those names? Very lame.

I used to do that...when I was 12. but my names were way more offensive.

Link never had parents...he was conceived by midichlo...oh wait. Yeah...I think Link was a stupid name but thats just his "official name" ..I think people were always encouraged to name him whatever you wanted...since that was one of the first games that allowed you to actually name a character.

No one has mentioned "Genus" from Tales of Symphonia. Such a bad mistranslation; the poor kid must have been teased so much in his youth.

OMG, you made me fall from my chair. :lolsign:

A long time ago me and all my buddies were playing FFVII "when it first came out" I had just gotten Vincent and was naming him then my friend said "hey I got a really cool name for him pass me the controller. He ended up naming Vincent Biddy Boo to be funny and I hadnt saved in a long time =p so he remained Biddy Boo for the whole time lol.

Lucca Apr 8, 2006 11:55 AM

Heh, I was such a square as a kid, I never named my characters bizzare names, but actual, real names.

But here's some I can think of off the top of my head:
  • Pottle from Vay (Hi! I'm a character named after a defunct metric unit of volume!)
  • Teepo from Breath of Fire III
  • Error from Zelda II (Probably my favorite WTF name ever)
  • Poo from Earthbound (Bodily function ahoy!)
  • Gogo from FFVI (Just...Gogo? What?)
  • Flonne from Disgaea (Just because I keep thinking of 'Flan')
  • Dart from Legend of Dragoon (Who in their right mind would name their kid DART?)
  • Cloud from FFVII (Sissist name ever)

I'll probably think of more in a minute, but that's a decent start, eh?

Elixir Apr 8, 2006 12:42 PM

I would end up naming my characters "penis" "vagina" "cunt" "bitch" "nigger" and "ass" just for the hell of it. Of course I never did this the first time through, but there were games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger where you couldn't resist.

It was quite immature, but naming Lucca as "ass" and naming Crono as "penis" made some pretty interesting outcomes.

Ass: Come on penis, we have to save vagina!

Then again there's those wonderful times in Earthbound where you'd see somebody ask something which would sound so much more hilarious if you had a crude name to go along with it. The beginning of Earthbound immediately comes to mind.

"Are you serious? You're going outside? At this time? Penis, are you nuts?" ='D Oh MAN that was awesome.

Err, actually, Wedge is a reference to Star Wars. There's a Wedge/Biggs duo in every (almost?) FF.

SouthJag Apr 8, 2006 06:26 PM

Hence why I said "FF universe." I've got no idea about a Wedge or Biggs in Star Wars, as I'm not a fan of Star Wars in the least.

ArmandoPenblade Apr 8, 2006 09:41 PM

I once named Shiva in FF8 to "My Bitch"

Reached the end of the Fire Cave and Ifrit appears.

"My God! They've got my bitch!"

That's right we do, and she ALWAYS swallows for Squall.

Shirokage Apr 9, 2006 05:09 AM

I don't remember what game it was, but I once named all my characters into numbers, because I was too lazy to read their katakana names, and there was no english input.

LMAO! I like how that can happen in just about every rpg too.

I remember my friend naming the GFs of FFVIII appropriate monikers:
Shiva - Icebitch
Ifrit - Hellkitty
Quetzacoatl - Thunderbird
Alexander - Holymecha!
Leviathan - Watersnake
Cactaur - Spikeboy

etc.
"Kill them all, hellkitty!"
