Replacing a Dell PSU
 

SO, a friend's computer was plugged in which resulted in a loud "pop". After that, nothing turns on.

After looking over it, I (and one other person seperately) feel it is the power supply unit.

The computer is a Dell 531s and the PSU is a 250 Watt DC Power Unit. My question is can I swap that in for another PSU? People are saying I have to go straight to Dell on this but I wanted to check for sure.

Question A) Can you actually remove the power supply
Question B) If you can, are there 20 or 24 pins on the connector to the mobo
Question C) If question B is yes, can you fit a retail power supply into the Dell

If all of the above is yes, then you don't need to worry. Usually Dell will make it so that their power supply is tiny as fuck so you do have to go to them...like they did with the floppy connectors making it so that there was ONE less pin so you had to go to them to get a new one.

Wouldn't be surprised if you could find spare Dell PSU's on ebay. Although I suppose you probably would get a one year warranty on the part if you went through dell.

Like Slash said, check the particulars and a regular one may fit, of course you may have trouble with the case.

becareful when trying to sub a Dell PSU as they use a custom wiring config. Its best to replace a Dell PSU with a Dell PSU
