Chrono Trigger: Prophet's Guile released!

So after many months of work, the staff of the Chrono Compendium have successfully completed their pet project, Chrono Trigger: Prophet's Guile, a major ROM hack of Chrono Trigger starring Magus and his life in the Kingdom of Zeal. It's the first Chrono Trigger hack ever to feature a brand new story, new scenarios, and artwork. While the game is short, roughly the length of 3 Chrono Trigger "scenarios", it attempts to elaborate on the life of Magus before his involvement with Crono's team, with some cleverly scripted scenes. The game was developed to stir up interest in the ROM hacking community again, which Zeality says has grown stagnant over the past few years, using the Chrono Trigger editing tool "Temporal Flux" released in 2004.

The game itself is actually an IPS patch for the English Chrono Trigger ROM, which you can download from the above link and apply yourself. A follow-up game, Crimson Echoes, which will help bridge the gap between the first game and Chrono Cross, is already in the works, which C99 says is around 25% complete.

As a fan of ROM hacks, this is pretty exciting! Has anyone else gotten a chance to fiddle with this?

Wow, very interesting. I'll definately will have to try this out when I can. Thanks for the info.

This looks really cool, unfortunately I can't seem to access the site. I sure hope the problem is just temporary because I'd love to try it out.

Edit:

In fact it was temporary. I can access it fine now. Can't wait to try it out!!!

Crimson Echoes? I'm pretty sure I played and finished that two years ago.

Fake edit: A few seconds of Googling reveals that I played a mere demo: Crimson Echoes Demo 2.0!
And it was fucking awesome.

RainMan Jan 13, 2008 04:58 PM

This is fucking amazing. Brilliant find Nall!

edit: and it would seem I spoke too soon. My Ips patcher didn't apply the file correctly... or SNES9x can't run the patch properly. Did anyone else have trouble applying the patch?

You probably won't get it to play right with SNES9x. It seems this patch was created with ZSNES in mind, so using that emulator will permit you to play it without any problems.

Thanks for posting; I'll add this thread to the Buzz Tracking thread at the site. The last major news post will occur at romhacking.net once the hack backlog has been taken care of.

I'm curious as to where they got their source material for this. Was it completely fabricated, or from some obscure canon?

No, it's fan fiction. As far as I'm aware, the only canon plot is Chrono Trigger itself, and maybe Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross if you particularly hated the entire Chrono Trigger cast.

No. Hard Pass. Jan 13, 2008 06:28 PM

Monkey, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't canon. Radical Dreamers and CC are both CT canon, sir.

Sousuke Jan 13, 2008 06:32 PM

I've started playing this, and so far, it's pretty well done. The only thing lacking is a few Tonics, because well... I've died a couple times on Mt. Woe. Heh.

Which is unfortunate because Cross practically pisses on everything CT set up in the original story.

Nice, I'll definitely be checking this out. I wasn't even aware such a thing was being worked on. >_>

Give me a hack featuring Robo as the main character and I'm sold.

Pretty much. CC just seemed like a really bad fanfic and milked the Chrono name to sell itself. The best way to look at it is a spin off gone horribly wrong. Anyway, this rom hack seems kind of weird, but it might be fun to check out. Thanks for posting about it for the rest of us!

That's quite the minority view on Chrono Cross. The rest of the world thought it was great (it averages 93% on Gamerankings / Gamespot's composite review score) and sold over twice as many copies in the US as Chrono Trigger. Only Japan balked, and of course that's why Square wasn't so open to a new game.

I really liked Chrono Cross and I will play this mod too. Crimson Echoes seems even more interesting? Is it also available to download on that page?

Heh, you know as well as I do (hell, probably better) that the best way to look like a knowledgeable RPG player ON THE INTERNET is to hate on everything Square has done since 1997.

RacinReaver Jan 16, 2008 06:45 PM

I remember when I bought Threads of Fate, Chrono Cross, and Legend of Mana for that SUMMER OF ADVENTURE Square promoted. My mom still uses the soft lunchbox you got for preordering all three games.

Threads of Fate was, by far, my favorite game of the bunch (still hate that stupid town music, though).

Forsety Jan 17, 2008 06:38 AM

I can't be the only person who thought Legend of Mana was like the best Mana game... Can I? Then again, this is coming from someone who thought Romancing SaGa was one of the best RPGs on the PS2 too so maybe I just have terrible taste in games. :(

The fun thing about time travel is that if the developers wanted, they could conveniently label Chrono Cross as "alternate timeline" and make another game based on events even of a similar time frame in a different timeline. Hell, CC itself is based on traversing between two distinct timelines, so why can't there be more. CC is canon, and no one can argue against that, but doesn't mean that is the only way it happened. That is why I don't get upset about them pissing on Chrono Trigger, as the other guy said.

^-^ Jan 17, 2008 10:45 AM

Crimson Echos? More like Radical Dreamers.

I'll have to give this Romhack a try.
