The things you hated (or loved) when you were younger

So I'm sitting here eating lunch and I'm thinking:

I like onions.

I remember when I was younger, I HATED onions. I refused to eat anything if it even had an onion taste to it! On the flip side, I used to like mushrooms a lot as a kid. Now you couldn't pay me to eat mushrooms. I hate'em. Niggers.

So what's changed in your taste for food since you were a child?

Manwich. Enough said. God, I used to love THAT as a kid and now that I'm older and KNOW what that shit was... just the sight of it again only repulses me.

I used to hate broccoli but I love them now. I just know now that I just hate STEAMED broccoli, not in general.

I also drank apple juice a LOT as a kid, but into my tweens/teen/young adult, I had never drank fruit juice for the longest time I could remember. Not sure what happened...

What's in a manwhich?

It's basically a cheap commercialized sloppy joe in a can.

I liked Miracle Whip sandwiches. Just Miracle Whip on white bread. My parents called it a 'closet food' and wouldn't let me eat it often. :P I also really loved Spaghettios and Chef Boyardee Ravioli, but while I can tolerate Spaghettios even now, I can't stand the ravioli. Good thing I know how to cook now.

I used to love Froot Loops when I was a kid. I ate those for breakfast every day for several years. They taste like cardboard now. But aside from that, everything I ate as a kid I can still eat now.

There are a lot more foods I used to hate but now eat. I'm fine eating tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, and anything spicy, all things I wouldn't touch years ago.

I use to have a pretty big sweet tooth when I was a child. I LOVED anything sweet. Now, not so much. =S Must be a psychological thing because my sweet tooth seemed to cease to exist after my dad was mistakenly diagnosed with diabetes (turns out he doesn't have diabetes at all, but my desire for sweets still remain to a bare minimum). I only eat an occasional cake slice every once a month or so when it's offered for dessert after dinner or if it's someone's birthday at the office.

Olives. Oh man I could never get enough olives, I ate them all the time with every meal no matter what. Olives first, everything second. Then one day, I think I was about 7, my brother made a big fuss about not wanting to eat his olives because they were gross and I haven't touched them since.

That and broccoli. I liked that stuff so much it was my first word.

I loved spaghetti when I was a kid and now I don't like it very much. I can eat it (my mom forces it on us once a week because it's easy to make) but I don't particularly like it. Same thing goes with chili, except we only make that every once in a while when it's cold outside. When I was a kid I also liked raw mushrooms but now I only like them cooked because they just taste like dirt raw. I also liked sweets as a kid and now, when I find myself eating dessert (which is only when I go out to eat), I lean toward the more creamy, not-so-sweet desserts.

It seems like my eating got more picky as I got older, but that's not really how it is. I'm more willing to try new things and I try to eat a variety of foods. My eating is also much more healthy now that I can choose my food for myself and my family (I do the grocery shopping and a lot of the cooking around here).

I've found as I get older I stop eating more and more stuff I have eaten when I was young/younger and not really picking up anything new to replace it with.

I am told I used to love broccoli when I was a kid but just the smell of it makes me sick.

I used to love Dijonnaise mustard when that was big about a decade ago, then got sick of it. Chicken Wings were a staple of mine, but I got sick once and then stopped eating them, that was like 15 years ago.

Generally I am a really picky eater and will try something only when it suits me. Push me and I won't even give it a thought, I will turn my nose up at it, so to speak, and go my way.

I remember detesting mushrooms as a child; now I find myself putting them in every dish that I can. Same with tomatoes. One day I went from avoiding them completely to adding them on everything.

And on the flip side, I can't stand cantaloupe anymore after it made me sick once. Just the smell of it now causes me to feel nauseous.

Same here except I've always liked tomatoes in one way or another. Now I just drink Clamato on a regular basis.

Hey sam! Good to see you back~

I hated onions when I was young, and I still loathe them with my entire being. Something about the smell, texture and taste just disgusts me like none other.

I think one of the odd things I loved when I was younger (yet hate now) are pickles. My parents said that I would eat half a jar of pickles when I was about 10, and now I refuse to eat them unless they're fried and served with ranch dressing -- and that's a recent development. I can't even pinpoint when I decided I didn't like them, I just stopped eating them altogether.

I HATED seafood, I wouldn't even touch it. I didn't even like fish sticks. :) I moved in with Zeph and shortly after when we went grocery shopping. He decided to pick up a salmon and demand that I try it. I of course threw a hissy fit, but after I tried it I fell in love. I started working at the Olive Garden and decided to try the "Grilled Shrimp Caprese" and the "Calamari" OH MY, it's wonderful, I was missing out :)

I still won't eat fish sticks though.

I used to hate eggs and shrimp 'cause I ate some bad ones when I was younger and couldn't stop puking. I still have to watch the cholesterol in the eggs but I love my shrimp.

And chicken's blood. I used to like it until i came to the United States.

Muzza Feb 22, 2008 10:34 PM

Y'see, uhh, the thing is...I still like all the foods I liked as a child. All of them. Pretty much any sort of candy/candy variation. However I never used to like prawns, and most seafood when I was younger. Now I love prawns...but still dislike most seafoods. So, basically my diet now is my younger diet + prawns.

My palette is pretty unsophisticated, ne?

Kraft Kid's Macaroni and Cheese. I couldn't get enough of that sheet. Even when I was seven, I could eat a pack by myself (I was and still am a skinny kid too). Now here is the gross part. I wouldn't chew it. Forkfull after forkfull (yes I ate it with a fork) would be shoveled into my mouth passing my teeth and continuing on their way.

Now I can't stand that shit.

I used to hate Tomatoes, and Coleslaw. I still have a hard time swallowing tomatoes, but I can eat them. Coleslaw can be soooo good, especially home made. The store stuff isn't as good.

I used to hate potato salad and macaroni salad, but now I can eat them no problem.
