Good Game, Peace Out

GGPO.net

I am... well, surprised to have not seen a thread for this sooner here at Gamingforce. Short description of GGPO is that it is a program with a netcode that gives nearly lagless play (for the most part) regardless of distance between the players. Having played it myself, I can say that for the most part, from build to build, this is true. Initially starting out with Marvel vs Capcom 1 and Street Fighter Alpha 2 as playable, the game list has grown recently with the addition of Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara and Vampire Savior.

My experiences with the program have all been enjoyable, and I was looking forward to starting some pick up games with people of the forums. If fighting games aren't your thing, we could always play Dungeons and Dragons, which is one of the best arcade beat 'em ups of the 90s. I go by the username R13, before I go thinking this is going to take off, I'd be interested in seeing who's... well, interested in giving this a go.

This seems ridiculously awesome. I just registered and downloaded the client. Just gotta get those games now. I'll be on MvC most of the time, but I'll hit someone up in SFA or D&D sometime for shits and giggles.

Edit: Is there any way to set up an Xbox 360 controller for the emulator this uses? I seem to be able to manage with the keyboard, but I much prefer a controller.

The program looks good, but I wish there were 4 player support especially for D&D. I suppose Kailolera...kailulierashgd whatever would still do, but it's still pretty hard to find people to play D&D on it. Maybe when GGPO gets out of alpha and goes beta, they'll have better support and add Metal Slug.

Made an account (Wakatu) probably will see me here and there but not often.

I play on Kaillera a lot, and recently in Kaillera someone developed a player2player program so you dont have to go through a server and play, and possibly lose packets or the connection. Now from what i've heard with GGPO, is its not bad...but p2p can do the job already and has an aresnal of good games already. I play Vampire savior all the time on it and it plays perfectly.

Personally, I just would suggest p2p over GGPO.

I am lost. I tried reading info on the site... but I dug even deeper. Can anyone explain?

GGPO is a lot less bullshit to deal with. I've played on Kaillera p2p, and while it's a nice option for games that aren't supported, there's still significant lag and that's why I recommend GGPO over it and made this thread. Because no one wants to bother with that type of experience if they can just play games that are consistently well connected. Anyway, 2 people interested thus far... possibly a third and fourth?

Kimchi: GGPO is a program/netcode designed for lagless play of what is currently fighting games and one arcade game via a modified version of Final Burn Alpha.

GGPO.net is a new approach to online fighting games. Traditional networking algorithms used to compensate for network latency result in either slower than normal gameplay or an excessive amount of delay (or lag) tacked onto the beginning of each move. GGPO.net uses a novel way to hide latency which lets the game run at full speed without adding any delay to any of your moves. So your timing doesn’t change and combos come out like butter. It’s almost like playing head-to-head in your living room!

GGPO.net is currently in Public Alpha. This means we there are a quite a few bugs to be worked out in the matchmaking system, but the state of the networking code is rock solid (solid enough to open to the public, at least). Expect frequent server crashes, resets, and other random events which may disrupt your game. If this bothers you, come back when we’re in Public Beta. =)

Everything you need to begin the test you can find on this page. To run the test hit the Signup, Downloads, and Installation sites to learn how to install the client. If you have questions or can’t figure something out, be sure to see the FAQ.

Please don’t hesitate to post your questions or comments on the GGPO forums hosted by Shoryuken.com (you must log into your SRK account to access the forums) or the new forums on GGPO.net.
