Mabinogi

I never thought I'd see this game get a North American release.

Mabinogi - Fantasy Life

Mabinogi is a Korean Grindan Gaem (MMORPG) in which there are no character classes and more than one walk of life to choose from. You can explore dungeons and fight monsters to level up, or you can be a cook, or a bard, or a fisherman, or a farmer, or a tailor, or a smith, or any number of other things. What skills you focus on determine your character's stats, and ultimately what you'll spend the majority of your time doing.

Another feature of the game is age: Every two weeks your character gets a year older. With age comes higher stats, more HP, and more stamina but at the same time the opportunity for growth decreases. Hence you can choose to start young (as low as 10 years old) and suffer through the early years of being squishy, or you can choose to start more mature (as high as 17 years old) and have an easier time progressing. The choice is yours.

I've played Mabinogi on the Korean Test Servers off and on for a year and a half or so, and it's one of the more interesting grindan gaems I've played. Each time I play I try to do something different, and actually being able to read the game will make this much, much easier (It's very text-heavy).

Is this up any other GFFers' alley?

I lost interest right about here.

Actually though, the graphics look pretty decent. I'll check this out as long as its free. Still, I'm not really a fan of the whole Korean Grindan genre.

Wait, is this english version? I play Korean version. It went P2P for awhile giving those who doesn't want to cough up money an hour of game play time per week.

It was fun when I played it with my friends, but I lost intrest after I got in to Ro2 beta. Before RO2 Beta, Grando Espada Beta. MMORPGs are getting... boring now.

Ew, 33 day count down. This is t3h sux0rs, knowing NA-Nexon, everything will be

1. Heavily cash based.
2. Different Cash from other versions.
3. Cash = everything.

They done this for North American Maple Story (comparing KMS) so why not Mabinogi?

Taco Dec 27, 2007 09:12 PM

Beats me. This is the english localized version though, and I really doubt they'd force game time restrictions on the North American version. Self-neglecting online gaming isn't nearly as big of a problem stateside.

As far as cash shop things go, I played the test servers just fine without any need for a cash shop item (and since it was the monthly-wiped test servers, no age reset either). It'll be interesting to see what's offered, though.

I don't think I haven't mentioned this before.

Mabinogi has no cash item as far as I know.

But knowing Nexon America, yes they will add bunch of cash items that no other version has.

I don't think Nexon America will ever go P2P. The worst thing they can do is adding cash system. (Korean Mabinogi went P2P -> F2P)

But than, you never know. RO just went to P2P -> P2P + Cash.

I personally found the game really... boring, Yogurting apealed more to me. School kids > Elves and human.

Taco Dec 27, 2007 09:22 PM

Yeah, I've seen games go P2P + Cash. My MMORPG gateway drugs, Dark Ages and Nexus:TK just recently did this and the thought of paying monthly and then paying more for special items just boggles my mind.

I thought that the korean Mabinogi had some optional-payment bonuses though, like longer play time on the servers that don't wipe, more pets and/or character design options, age reset, and the like?

Server whipe? I never heard of these, those are on test servers no?

Ahahaha, those sons of bitches, they added cash while I was gone.

There will be movie streaming. Click bottom right button of movie box. [it will lead you to silly homeweb]

Than you will see shop on tool box of the site.

"Character-cards" "Pet Cards" "Gear Chards" "Fashion" blah blah

Another typical Korean MMO from Nexon. I hate MMORPG thanks to cash shit.

Ashton Mar 4, 2008 04:58 AM

I played Mabinogi in korean back when it was new in Korea and i am totally playing this open beta tomorrow on the 5th because oh god did I love it.

All the complaints about the cash items are worthless because the real complaint and worry to be looking at is paying for a nearly required gameplay feature.

In the game you age every week on saturday. The maximum age is 25 and to put it simply your growth grinds to a halt.

To fix this you can rebirth, but you need a card to do it with. With that you can go back to level 1 and the lowest age (10) but you keep all your skills and such.

Freelance Mar 4, 2008 07:31 AM

So this game is like Ultima Online with the other things you can do (IE Fishing, Cooking, etc), but easier to get into?

I like the graphical style. Not sure how the battle system works though.

So when you mean by your growth, do you mean levels and everything else (if there are levels)?

Taco Mar 4, 2008 03:41 PM

He means stats and ability points gained by growth. You can still level up and gain small amounts of stats, but the rest of your character's attributes will come from the skills you invest your Ability Points into.

Muzza Mar 8, 2008 05:12 AM

So has anybody tried this? I'm kinda intrigued myself. (<-- that's coming from a person who dislikes MMORPGs)

Bigblah Mar 8, 2008 05:37 AM

There's a couple of GFFers playing now.

Taco - Cinnamon
Bigblah - Chidori
Lace - Forte
Kari-chan - Minasu
Sakabadger - Reverie
Icetron - Aisu

Taco is the RTFO guildmaster, although guilds are currently borked and can't be expanded beyond 5 members.

Manny Biggz Mar 8, 2008 06:18 AM

You fellas on a open beta for the American version, or is the game out already?

Muzza Mar 8, 2008 06:51 AM

They're on the open beta. Website and download is here.

K_ Takahashi Mar 13, 2008 02:08 PM

I knew at least a few people had to play this.

Though I have not done much with the game itself, I'm on Mari server and my character name is Ktak.

Plarom Mar 13, 2008 03:07 PM

I hadn't even heard about this game until recently. I JUST installed the game two days ago to give it a try! I don't remember the name of the server I'm on (something with an 'R'), but I'm willing to start a new character on a server where all the GFFers are at.

I've played a lot of MMORPGs, but I haven't played any in quite some time. I am familiar with many of Nexon's games, though.

I think I'll like this game not only for its simplicity, but also for its variety! I enjoy any game where you DON'T have to focus on grinding monsters, and in this one it's clear you can make a living just from mining, tailoring, smithing, ect. There's a solid selection of skills you can use, and the aging system is definitely intriguing.

Lacerta Mar 14, 2008 04:14 AM

We (Team RTFO) play on Ruairi, as Mari is laggy as all hell, and Tarlach is the foreigner server (where people bypass the IP Block).

Ruairi also the most behind so ヽ( ̄ー ̄ )ノ

Although it should be noted the maximum age is not 25 (there is afterall a title for being 40 years old). Just, once you get 25 you will stop gaining anything for leveling (or was it 26), although food can still raise your stats if you eat enough of it, so it is considered the maximum by some standards.

Taco Mar 14, 2008 10:20 AM

Is it that you stop gaining stats from leveling or that you stop gaining stats from aging? I could've sworn that you could still gain the tiny amount of stats you get from leveling after 25.

You mean Aging.

Also your age stays at 25 and just shows like 25+1 or 25+2, i have no Idea why.

Also, as long as you had an account before.. what was it, the 7th? Foregin IPs could loginto mabinogi fine. Infact, foregin IPs just can't make an account for the game.

Negative. You still get AP though at least, just no stats. Either that or the stats are like 0.000000000001

Also foreign accounts are being blocked now by saying they do not have a valid service option and such. It is really easy to bypass though.

Taco Mar 14, 2008 02:12 PM

Most recently from the game's website

Fortunately, that is not true. There will NOT be a database wipeout, and all of the data will carry over to the commercial service. You can rest assured you will keep all of your characters, items, skills and etc.

We thank you for playing Mabinogi and for your support.

I wonder how long the beta's going to last then, and if they're going to start any mainstream quests during the beta. Keeping everything post-beta sure is nice, though.

9000 years. Who knows though, maybe they will run betas faster than their patches.

(Still waiting for that guild fix)

Cetra Mar 17, 2008 12:12 AM

I'm curious how active everyone is. I'm play fairly casually but I'm currently with a level 22 on Mari. I'm considering restarting on Ruairi so I would have some people to talk to. I also sort of want to get away from the 4chan crowd infesting Mari.

Taco Mar 17, 2008 08:58 AM

Sometimes I think I'd trade the 4chan crowd for the creepy bunch of roleplayers that seems to be all over Rauiri. Nothing like seeing a "couple" being "in-character" with their polygonal anime avatars.
