VGM in Mediaval style

Hi there, I like VGM very much, esp. when they have celtic style or having style of renaissance music to give impression of mediaval games. Too bad most of mainstream VGM are hardly mediaval. Do you have any recommendation?

I'm looking for any composer who composes VGM in mediaval style (like the ones in Heroes of Might and Magic Series, Wizardry, Ultima, FF Crystal Chronicles, etc). I'm especially looking for the one who uses a lot traditional instruments they have mysterious elegance IMO. :juggler:

You want real ART? Here you go! :)
This monumentally awesome track comes from a pathetic version of the "Lord of the Rings" for the SNES.

I'd love to see a remake of it.

Hmm, something wrong with my browser. The attachment won't open. I guess I will check it out later.

btw if you love mediaval music like me, try Lady Stalker. I have downloaded it from www.slightlydark.com and it surprisingly bit classical (though there are some unpleasant tracks, some SNES snythesized tracks blended with some real synth)

The track "Debut" from Final Fantasy 7 has a slightly quaint/folksy sound. Is that the sort of the thing you're looking for?

I recall Michael Hoenig's Baldur's Gate being in the classical medieval stylee. Have a go at that.

bishop743 Mar 25, 2006 01:53 PM

hmm.. I would check out the following albums:

The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind Original Soundtrack
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Special Edition Soundtrack
VM Japan Original Sound Track
World of Warcraft Soundtrack
Lineage II The Chaotic Chronicle
Tengai Makyou III NAMIDA Original Soundtrack
EverQuest II Original Soundtrack

There are quite a few others I could recommend, but try those out if you already haven't.

Agreed, 100% Baldur's Gate II was decent, but the first games soundtrack really captured the style perfectly.

Hmm, Baldur's Gate... Well it's quite mediaval too bad many of the songs are very serious. I'm not really like Michael Hoenig, though.,

I guess I will hunt for elder scroll and lineage then.

@Dhsu
Yup, I'm looking for VGM like these.

I'd give the Guild Wars soundtrack a try too. Jeremy Soule (who has done other works previously mentioned in this thread) wrote that music; he's done quite a bit of this kind of stuff.

If you're looking for something that sounds authenically medieval, rather than a modern equivalent, I would recommend Soule's "Total Annihilation: Kingdoms." The entire thing sounds like medieval chamber music. Of course, it's boring as hell, but it *is* an authentic sound.

I would also recommend select tracks from "Final Fantasy IX" and most of "Vagrant Story."

eriol33 Mar 27, 2006 01:53 AM

what? Total Annihilation?? I thought it's kinda truck-racing game? no? (I thought I saw the mp3 at circleofdeth.com a month ago.)

Final fantasy IX and vagrant story... hmm, fine. gotta check it out.

Watts Mar 27, 2006 02:14 AM

Hmm medieval type music eh?

I would try getting my hands on a rip of Rome: Total War game rip. Believe a couple of ftps have it around here.

The original Total Annihilation is a sci-fi RTS game. Its psuedo-sequel, TA: Kingdoms, is a fantasy RTS. Hence the medieval music.

You will find a lot of music on my FTP that I think you will like, if you wish to take a look.

Nuh Mar 31, 2006 01:56 PM

"Walkman's ease" from Oblivion sounds like it was ripped straight from HoMM4.

If you want pure, celtic goodness you can't go wrong with Suikoden 2 ~ Orrizonte. My favourite celtic album ever. The other Suikoden celtic albums are great as well.
