Ahahaha someone nominated a Haruko Momoi song. Can't wait for the essays in response to this one (as with any other Japanese vocal track)

2nd time nominating:

orion_mk3 Dec 13, 2007 02:37 PM

Starting without me, eh? :D

A quick formatting tip: the streaming songs look better if the titles are on the right and the players on the left. I'd also wager that a little percent encoding on that # would make Board #4 playable ;)

Fixed.

surasshu Dec 13, 2007 07:47 PM

Ooh, UNDER17! Kotae isn't my favorite Momoi Haruko song ever or anything (SHI-NO-BI! Ooh, MAIL ME!, or maybe her NES cover of Pegasus Fantasy...), but ANYWAY. She's a ridiculously awesome person, and this song is incredibly cute. Instant win, and whoever nominated it has some guts!

Azer ~ Panzer Dragoon is unfortunately a game I've never played myself, but I've heard the soundtrack before and I think it's quite great. Wandering is just what I remember from it. I also really like this gamma track, especially when the synthleads come in. Really kick ass stuff.

The other nominations really weren't my cup of tea, although Board #4 is more or less alright. Blown away by what seems to me superior competition, though!

3 points - UNDER17 Best Album 1 ~Bishoujo Game Song Ni Ai Wo !!~ - Kotae
2 points - I/O perfect Audiotracks - gamma
1 point - Azel ~ Panzer Dragoon RPG - Wandering

Heh, these three tracks are close to being as different from each other as possible.

I took Drakken's job too! Wanted to get this up ASAP.

Also, Board #4 didn't work even with percent encoding, so I removed the pound sign from the file name and it worked. However, I removed the MP3 link because it's one of those MP3s with a 48 kHz sample rate that the player slows down. :(

[00:08] <@Larry> too bad his sounds suck
[00:08] <@Larry> the drums in this are rather weak too
[00:09] <@CHz> I haven't listened to that, but I have faith Kaleb would pick a Sakuraba piece at least somewhat worth listening to.
[00:10] <@Larry> it picks up before the 2 minute mark
[00:10] <@Larry> I imagine that's why he picked it

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 14, 2007 12:50 AM

Forgot to nominate something new!
  • Artist: Necros (Andrew Sega)
  • Album/Game Title: Progression
  • Track Title: Metroplex
  • Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
  • Track Number: 1
  • Year: 1995
  • Additional Information: I promised a year ago that I'd nominate a different track from this album, but I lied.
  • Source(s): http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=6518

cf. Song of the Week - Qualification: Search for the Lost Riff. I figure that, if Necros can collaborate with a guy with fewer VGM credits and get an original track in, then an original piece he wrote completely by himself is fine too. Plus, nine games, etc.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Dec 14, 2007 02:33 AM

Azel ~ Panzer Dragoon RPG - Wandering: The pseudo-Asian thing isn't working for me in this track. The rest of the piece isn't strong enough to overcome the displeasure I get from the somber tone.

Barbie Super Model (SNES Game Rip) - Stage 1: For such a short track, it should have a larger impact. Also, the SNES sound ain't helping.

I/O perfect Audiotracks - gamma: This is acceptable, in the sense that I don't mind industrialized techno beatz. However, I'll point out that it's very stereotypical of its genre.

MARIO SPORTS CD THE BEST - Tournament 1st & 2nd Match: Melody: good. Sound selection: not so good. Get behind someone who can engineer synthesized music better and this would be pretty nice.

Minna no Golf 5 Original Soundtrack - Iris Field C.C.: It's happy and I approve of that. But let's not overlook the fact that it's essentially a one-minute track that's set to loop. The potential is cut short by the composer's lack of ambition.

Super DX-Ball (Game Rip) - Board #4: I could listen to this numerous times and probably find something new during each listen. That makes it interesting to me. So far this week, that's a distinct advantage over the rest.

UNDER17 Best Album 1 ~Bishoujo Game Song Ni Ai Wo !!~ - Kotae: This image track commits the cardinal VGM sin of both being sung in a foreign language and by a girl attempting to sound as if she's four years old. Wasn't there a karaoke version of this available? The instrumentation is competent but the voice makes me want to break something with my face. No thanks.

ZUNTATA LIVE 1997 ~CINETEQUE RAVE~ (AUDIO FILE) - G: I have no idea what's going on in this track. Seriously, was this a collaborative effort with some post-modern 80s group like "Vox" or "Art of Noise"? It's not bad, but it's definitely all over the musical spectrum. I'll probably throw it a point for originality at least.

Pointyness Levels:

2 Points: Super DX-Ball (Game Rip) - Board #4
2 Points: ZUNTATA LIVE 1997 ~CINETEQUE RAVE~ (AUDIO FILE) - G
1 Point: I/O perfect Audiotracks - gamma
1 Point: MARIO SPORTS CD THE BEST - Tournament 1st & 2nd Match

Kind of a modified shotgun spread there. Nothing knocked me out with awesome but a couple were pretty interesting in their approach, while the others that received points did so on technical merits: engineering and melody, respectively.

Djinova Dec 14, 2007 03:16 AM

Easy week, might as well retract my support for option 3 and go for 1 instead:

1st: ZUNTATA LIVE 1997 ~CINETEQUE RAVE~ (AUDIO FILE) - G: This track pretty much hits my eccentricity nerve with a lot of strange ideas and sounds. Ah well, ZUNTATA makes good music, a great entity.

2nd: Super DX-Ball (Game Rip) - Board #4: The reasons for my liking here are similar to the former track, though this track is a bit more straightforward and electronic towards the end.

3rd: UNDER17 Best Album 1 ~Bishoujo Game Song Ni Ai Wo !!~ - Kotae: Nice melody and harmony, it has cute written into the music. It's a bit cheesy at times, and I think they could have cut 1-2 minutes and still preserve the message.

Also, hilarious chatlog Mr. Liontamer, would read again. Post more of these.

katchum Dec 14, 2007 07:52 AM

3 points G: harmony (weird and creative: listen to those major to minor chords), sound quality superb, good structure. I love the middle section and its build up.
2 points gamma: Rhythm is getting to me, nice sound effects. But it completely lacks melody.
1 point Panzer Dragoon: It was the best of the remaining bad songs.

Mario was pretty boring. Panzer Dragoon had some good instrumentation but was too ambient and low profile to me, I didn't like the sound quality. Kotae gave me goosebumps. Iris Field C.C. was too happy and repetitive. Super DX-Ball made me think that the composition was written too simplistic.

Nomination:

Title: 03 Book of Days
Album: Grim Grimoire
Catalog Number N/A
Release Date Apr 12, 2007
Release Type Enclosure / Promo
Media Type CD (1 disc)
Composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto

1 point - Azel ~ Panzer Dragoon RPG - Wandering
2 points - I/O perfect Audiotracks - gamma
3 points - ZUNTATA LIVE 1997 ~CINETEQUE RAVE~ (AUDIO FILE) - G

----

Not giving me much to work with, feels like a very subdued week but of the eyes glazed over variety. Torn on my next nomination options, mostly because they're from the same album. At the very least, if this one does poorly I can nominate the other with no qualms.

Album: Shin Kidousenki Gundam Wing : Endless Duel Original Game Audio
Track: Airport ~ Heavyarms Stage

2 points: Super DX-Ball (Game Rip) - Board #4
2 points: UNDER17 Best Album 1 ~Bishoujo Game Song Ni Ai Wo !!~ - Kotae
2 points: ZUNTATA LIVE 1997 ~CINETEQUE RAVE~ (AUDIO FILE) - G

I usually listen to the songs in the same order they're posted (i.e. alphabetically) and nothing was terribly impressive as I kept going down, it was shaping up to be one stinker of a week. That is until the last three songs came in and saved the uh... week. =P

Darkcomet72 Dec 14, 2007 02:53 PM

First off, a hearty congrats to the Salamander -Pro Fusion- album for being the first soundtrack/gamerip to place 3 times and, more importantly, win twice.

Now, for my next nom, coming from the Pinnacle of Human Achievement Soundtrack:

Album: Battle Garegga - Perfect Soundtrack
Composer: Manabu Namiki
Track: Subversive Awareness (Stage5 - cloud)
Track #: 08
Disc #: 1
Catalouge Number: INDV-1010
Source: Game Music Revolution
Additional Info: I would've gone with the original printing were the tracks not remastered. It was pretty difficult choosing between this and Hosoe's wonderful arrangement.

The soundtrack is labeled "Perfect" for a reason.

surasshu Dec 14, 2007 03:55 PM

I should probably nominate something as well so here goes...

Yoko Kanno is really one of my favorite composers ever, never mind favorite game composer. Her NES stuff is amazing too, but this soundtrack in particular is my all-time favorite by her. I'm not sure if this is eligible though, since Vol2 is still disqualified... Otherwise I'll hold on to this one and put up a different track.

Composer: Yoko Kanno
Album: Napple Tale OST Vol1.
Track: Snowball
Track: 10
Download link: hirr!

Will be nominating something else!

Dhsu Dec 14, 2007 04:26 PM

Yeah, I think I'd move to ban Napple Tale...it's an excellent soundtrack but has gotten plenty of representation across SotW and BSC.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 14, 2007 05:03 PM

I'm fine with Napple Tale, as my experiences with it is about zero.

New nomination!

Artist: Osamu Kubota
Album Title: Milestone
Track Title: Nageki no ki Arbe triste -a la viennoise-
Disc number: 2
Track number: 11
Catalog number: LC1556-7
Year: 2007
Source: Konamistyle

"Milestone" is dj Taka's first album, having done a ton of work on Bemani games before. The first disc is all songs by Taka, most of which I don't care for (as I really don't care for Taka's work in general). But the second disc is all remixes of various Taka songs by other artists Taka knows. Most of these are amazing. I almost nominated Akira Yamaoka's remix, but instead decided to go with Osamu Kubota's.

Bigblah Dec 15, 2007 03:40 AM

Yoko Kanno is essentially a free pass to a top placing =/

surasshu Dec 15, 2007 07:06 AM

Hmm... Well, perhaps the NES stuff she's done isn't as popular. I wanted to nominate that, but I got too lazy to bounce a NSF track... =D

Perhaps I'll nominate something else, then. Stay tuned!

Maybe, but I'd have no problem with someone nominating something from one of her more obscure titles. Napple Tale has gotten lots of representation here like Dhsu said. The Uncharted Waters II Special Edition album would be a no-go now as well, I think.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Dec 15, 2007 01:16 PM

Honestly, I didn't know Napple Tale had been represented when I put the Volume 2 nomination up several weeks ago. I simply knew that "Wild Wind" was a damned fine track. I almost never check the nomination history; I figure that if something has become too popular for inclusion, or if it was nominated long ago, somebody will speak up.

In theory, so are several other composers/groups: Sakimoto, Hulsbeck, "Yack", Kukeiha Club - they all have excellent performance records in SotW as well. Despite their obvious consistency, however, I just can't bring myself to even considering a ban on any particular composer. Not that it was suggested here, but the insinuations could've been interpreted in that direction.

I think SotW has merely reinforced the fact that these people are prolific composers and perhaps they deserve repeated honors for being so excellent.

Yeah, I feel the same way. If people want to nominate more obscure works by them, go ahead. Considering the quality of their work, bringing to light lesser known stuff by them could only be a good thing. :)

Here we go, new nomination. Disregard the Yoko Kanno nom!

Does anyone know what happened to Naoki Kodaka? I mean, he did some of my all time favorite NES and early SNES/Megadrive stuff, and then he just... vanished. He doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. :(

Well, anyway, here's a track from his Batman soundtrack on the Megadrive. All Batman games developed by Sunsoft were incredible, with amazing soundtracks, so picking just one was pretty tough. I decided to go with my favorite track from the Megadrive game--I think the NES game is pretty well-known as a good soundtrack, and the Gameboy sound is so raw. I think the FM sound of this track is adequately "produced" to be enjoyed by all, and anyway this might just be my all-time favorite by him though I think I like Chemical Factory from the Gameboy game a bit better. I guess I can always put that up later.

Composer: Naoki Kodaka / 小高直樹
Year: 1990
Album: Megadrive Batman (.vgz game rip)
Track: Stage 4-1 ~Gotham City Streets 2~ & Stage 5 ~ In the Sky Over Gotham City~
