OMG HAX

People always gripe about the vulnerabilities of computers, but have any of you actually been hacked before? Or to further incite discussion, have any of you ever gotten some form of virus, crippling or otherwise?

I've only had one Virus YEARS ago back when I was running Mac OS 8.6, and it was completely non-lethal. Definitely a perk of having a Mac is not worrying about that shite.

Mods, if this is more suited for the computer forum, feel free to move it.

Sasser's the only time the integrity of a computer I've been using has been compromised, and that was easily fixed. Apart from that and occasional malware, I've been fine.

And besides, I own a Mac now.

Yeah, curse that uninformed general public for not knowing the ins and outs of computing! Morons! :argh:

I've only had one Virus YEARS ago back when I was running windows 3.1, and it was completely non-lethal. Definitely a perk of having actual knowledge of computer maintenence is not worrying about that shite.

The only thing really serious I got was the MSBLAST worm a few years back. I was freaking out because it would force my computer to shut down after every 5 minutes I had it running. It would give me a countdown for 30 seconds, and BAM. My computer shuts down. I think I had to boot up in safe mode and run my virus scanner to get rid of it.

Oh my Lord, that is hilarious!

EDIT: Oh yeah, we are talking about viruses. Nothing lethal ever, though I've had AVG Free detect something once or twice and isolate it. But for the most part, I've never had a "virus".

scotty Dec 8, 2007 02:03 PM

My parents have somehow received a virus multiple times that would fuck the computer up to the point that it wont turn on.

Bernard Black Dec 8, 2007 02:23 PM

Way back when Kazaa managed to send us one that caused the laptop to fuck up pretty badly. It was such a long time ago I can't even remember if we managed to salvage anything from it.

Probably not a virus. They probably just suck at system maintenence.

mortis Dec 8, 2007 07:38 PM

I got some sort of virus. Basically, it would have a dialog box open up, saying "Mr. blahblah says not today" (I forgot the actual name) and then it would shut down. Well...I just did Ctrl-Alt-Del the next time, then ended the program for that before it could turn my computer off.

Still, I had to reformat my computer as I didn't know what else was on there at that point and didn't want to take chances.

Ayos Dec 8, 2007 07:44 PM

I've never gotten virus'd since I purchased my own computer. My family's computers, however, get virus'd all the time. This is probably due to the fact that they don't bother purchasing antivirus/antispyware software ever, and my teenage brother doesn't know how to safely browse for porn. Or cover his tracks after.

I remember once, back the old 56K, mIRC/AIM days, my family's computer got hax'd by some funny guy who left completely non-threatening messages on a chat window that would pop up on its own and never go away. My dad formatted the computer and got us a different ISP.

janus zeal Dec 8, 2007 11:31 PM

The only time I've gotten a virus was when I decided to run "photoshop cs2 crack REAL.exe" I was desperate.
For the most part I don't really need AV software. Honestly, not being an idiot will keep you from getting a virus.
