GFF Calendar 2008?

Maybe its a little late to start something like this. Although I am thinking about something for the Creator's Cafe or something along that lines. A Calendar with 12 artworks + Cover. That should be pretty doable right? I am thinking about more a collaboration thingy rather then contest thingy. Also rather then individual working on single artworks people should be able to collaborate for each. arrangement for this can be made in Creator's Cafe and over AIMs.

What do you think?

Whatever the medium is workable, as long as the final resolution is good enough on print, I guess. Although this doesn't necessary have to be printed. I haven't decide on any details yet, that's why I started the discussions about it.

Smelnick Dec 4, 2007 04:39 PM

Artwork is awesome. How about including the other half of creators cafe, the writers. It would definitely attract more help. With each picture, add a short poem, or limerick or other forms of small writing. It's somewhat close to the beginning of the year so its a short amount of time, but even if the calendar isn't finished till sometime in January, that's not so bad is it?

Not at all. Poem image combo sounds like a good idea. Maybe its possible to have poem inspired images or vise versa.

Smelnick Dec 4, 2007 06:42 PM

Yah, thats sorta what I was thinking. Some form of poem or quote to go along with the image.

Seris Dec 5, 2007 11:58 AM

This sounds pretty cool, actually.

I call dibs on July!

I poked it and it made a sad sound Dec 5, 2007 12:47 PM

What would the theme be? Would there be a theme?

I wish I could contribute, but as my art skills are minimal, I can't participate.

Well, there are more then one way to contribute, writings, organization or just ideas, I haven't think of a theme yet, although if its GFF related, I think it would be natural if it is something to do with the community. Although I hope its possible we can make it so that it has certain polished finish to the images. Although if well thought out, sketchy would be good too, stuff like niki's art for example.

Sure, once you have time, get started. :3 Share you idea so we can pool ideas if you want. Why July though? :p

I was thinking that maybe, once you guys get the project done (and I could lend a hand if need be...? Though like I said, I don't have too much to offer in the way of these sorts of things), I could work to get it printed, and maybe up for sale?

I know I would want a calendar to post in my office or in my kitchen that had artwork from you marvelous artists.

If I can help in any way, let me know - I think this is a fantastic idea. <3

Smelnick Dec 5, 2007 06:07 PM

I volunteer to write a couple pieces of poetry for whichever month needs it. I'd have to see the art for the month first.

I've developed a new-found fondness for the lazy summer days, since this last summer went by so swimmingly. So I want July, July is MINE >8U

But anyway, I was just thinking about maybe drawing something summer-related that would kind of depict what the month in particular reminds me of?

You know. Drawing what July makes me think about~

Acro-nym Dec 5, 2007 06:54 PM

I could contribute a drawing, but I can't do anything beyond simple coloring. And it wouldn't really be terribly artistic, I think, not that that's a requirement. Maybe I could use grayscale.

I could contribute some writing, but I don't much enjoy writing poetry. I'm not sure what other kind of writing could be included.

I do have an idea for an overall theme, though. I voted in a competition once where one of the challenges was to design a character based on a month (I submitted my own entry that somewhat defied the rules). It seems to me that that could be something to use here.

Smelnick Dec 5, 2007 07:21 PM

A theme could even be as follows:

Draw a picture that describes the weather and climate and spirit of said month's atmosphere in the artists region. Aka, is it winter, rainy and such like that.

If its not too much work, I would like to find out about what the minimal digital/real world dimension of the artwork is suppose to be, at least. Giving an idea of how big to shoot for should be a good starting point.

Seris: Beach? Summer fun? I don't know, I live in the middle of a desert. >.>;; Just do what you like. :3

Acro-nym: I heard you are busy, and you don't have to do this all by yourself you know. Think about a little bit of collaboration, for example get someone to ink and/or color. Don't be too stress about it. :3 give idea is contributing a lot already.

Designing a character for each month eh? There is an idea. :3 Kind of like the "pinup" thingy I saw in another forum. Although I think it doesn't have to be pin up though, but that's one potential approach that I think people can think about.

Pyromanic: Interesting idea. :3 It gives a lot of freedom I think. I wonder if certain seasonal or regional holiday can play into this also.

I have a question (please don't jump on me). When I first saw this thread, I thought, "Oh hey cool, a Calendar, I'd love to contribute one of my photographs!", but when I read the project description, I have to say my heart sank a little.

Is there any room for photographers in this project? We're artists too. :(

Smelnick Dec 5, 2007 08:33 PM

In my opinion, that'd be fine. How cool would a calendar with 12 pages of hand drawn art be? well cool, but why exclude parts of the community. My vote is towards yes on the photography part. It would also mean I'd be able to contribute some art as well =D

Hey, I never said I was going to exclude anyone. Photography should be fine too.

PiccoloNamek Dec 5, 2007 09:02 PM

Awesome. :D Now I just need to find a good photograph.

Of course~

The standard wall calendars are printed as follows:
11.00 x 8.50 inches
279mm x 216mm
1650 x 1276 pixels

Some places look for a 2304 x 1728 [i]photolike[/img] image. They throw in a trim on their own.

Depending on where you have it done, you can play around with those sizes. Most calendars are the standard 11x8.5 inches, though. If you'd be looking to have folks buy the calendar off a site (like a storefront), I'd have to look more closely.

If there's potential to have it printed, I'd recommend 300dpi.

The cost of each calendar would be ballpark $15-20.

Maico Dec 5, 2007 11:54 PM

One picture idea could be to have everyone take a full-body picture of themselves, and then someone with photoshop skills can put everyone in like when you used to stand in rows for a class photo in elementary school.

Dark Nation Dec 8, 2007 12:57 AM

Damm you Seris, first you steal River Tam, then you steal my Birth Month. What Next?

WHAT NEXT?

Also, as far as Photography goes, are we looking for any particular subject?
I can do some pretty mean scenery~

Magi Dec 8, 2007 01:34 AM

Sass: Thanks, that's pretty useful information. Although I just realize that I have never actually worked in printable resolution before. 8x11.5 at 300 dpi is approximately 2550 x 3300. I have never actually worked on an image that big before.

Nothing specific, although I think it might help if its seasonal. Something appropriate to the month.

Ozma Dec 8, 2007 04:20 AM

Maybe I could help on the poetry part, though maybe it won't be too superb. Just need to see the theme picked about the month first. So Smelnick, may I help you in this?

About drawing, I'm afraid I can't contribute too much^^ My drawing proprtion is as bad as hell.

Magi Dec 8, 2007 04:35 AM

At the moment I am not trying to push very hard, since people still have finals and year end crap to deal with. Although I think it would be good if people pick out what month they wanted to do. Feel free to collaborate. If you pick out a month, write down one or two idea about what you wanted to do at share it in the thread, once you have time after the school year end madness, please post some preliminary sketches or rough drafts (writing), so it can be discussed.

Edit:
Oh yeah, I think the month should be first come first serve, although there isn't anything saying that only one person can work on one month. If you have specific month in mind, feel free to say so.

If you include real people in your photos or artworks you might want to obtain appropriate releases, I am saying this just in case, but this shouldn't apply to cartoonish caricatures or "anime" version.
