Putting Together Computer - Did I do it right? Advice/Recommendations

Heya,

I dun wanna buy a computer from store 'cause they always suck one way or another... now I do have a VIDEO CARD it's a x1950pro (which is probably pretty crappy by now)

This is what I have so far:

1- I am a NEWBIE!!!
2- I am on a relatively low budget
3- Is the video card that I own compatible with the parts I choose - if not what would you recommend
4- Did the parts I choose fit together?
5- Are they any good?

I know I am missing some stuff... what else am I missing and can you recommend me one if you know one of your head?

I am trying to build a gaming pc on a low budget lol

BIGWORM Nov 17, 2007 02:12 AM

You got 8GHz RAM?

That blows DDR3 out of the water while igniting it!

Free.User Nov 17, 2007 02:18 AM

Considering you did mean GB, why on earth do you want 8GB of ram? Are you building a server? I don't even know if Vista will recognize that much ram. For a person on a budget, 2GB should suffice.

EDIT: You're computer is going to be as useful as a bucket of nails unless you thrown in a Motherboard, CPU, and PSU into the mix. Did you have any ideas for those, or are you at a loss?

Tsunade Nov 17, 2007 02:55 AM

The barebone PC has the motherboard. Windows vista 64 bit recognizes 8GB RAM. The reason why I want 8GB RAM is because I want speed, and a computer with 2GB RAM and it's not fast enough. Plus the motherboard that comes with it has enough spaces for 8GB.

KimAykut Nov 17, 2007 03:35 AM

First let me recommend to you Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

You are need a quad core2duo processor with your computer so it will run. You are also need a good video card. ATi is coming out with HD350/70's very soon. They are very cheap and very good.

Second of all, don't get vista. Download a copy of windows xp from Mininova : The ultimate BitTorrent source!

Then all you need is XP, a processor, and a video card and you are set.Vista sucks the big hairy cock. it is slow in games and unstable.

you are a fool for ordering these parts without doing research you know?

you have 4GB of ram, and how can the computer read it at 8 without a processor or video card?

My bad, my eyes skipped over the barebones part.

Now honestly, unless you are doing some intense video editing, you seriously won't see a difference in speed between 2gb and 8gb (well, that argument is somewhat subjective, but certainly not between 4gb and 8gb).

Also, Jesus Christ, the price on that barebones kit is damn good.

Also, one more thing: If you are ordering from Canada, you should use NCIX.com.

Dhsu Nov 17, 2007 07:31 PM

Er, the site says you save $70 on the barebones, which is nice, but not phenomenal as you made it sound IMO. I kind of agree that 8GB of RAM is kind of overkill though, especially if you're on a budget. Exactly what are you doing that makes your computer slow down with 2GB of RAM, Tsunade??

Also, you can probably ignore everything KimAykut just said. The GeForce 8800GT outperforms ATi's HD 3870 in practically every situation. And Vista is the only way you're going to get DX10.

you play with fire, english boy.

The Radeon HD 3800's AREN'T as good as the 8800GT, no. They are come very very close though, and cost significantly less than the former. I see that he says "cheap" so i give him cheap ($170 compared to the $280ish 8800)

AMD Radeon HD 3800: ATI Strikes Back | Tom's Hardware

The HD 3870 isn't meant to be a new top of the line card, if you have a brain you see it is mostly for economy.

Did you also notice that the 8800GT's performance gains aren't astronomical?

Vista sucks, do not listen to yourself. There have been no games yet that even use vistas DX10 feature efficiently. Crysis and bioshock are examples of this poo. The only thing Vista and DX10 will do it steal your frame rate. That isn't to be said that in near-future DX10 won't work good on vista, but by the time that happens vista will probably be good to have either way.

Anyway angry boy who says ignore me, I wold probably get the 8800GT, just because it's nVidia and I like their drivers more. It's also a bit better, more notable at higher resolutions, but if I was on a budget (which i wouldn't be, evar with my computer) then I would go HD all the way.

and Vista sucks, if you can prove me wrong on that I'll show tits or GTFO.
(and that's not happening)

On a Core2 Quad with 8GB of RAM, Vista will run fan-fucking-tastic.

Just one 8800 GT would be good, SLI'ing two would be able to run almost anything at the native resolution of a good LCD widescreen display with max settings.

Man up and show tits or GTFO (preferably the latter.)

yes, it would run good. but vista is unstable, and a lot of good software doesn't work with it. Some parts of vista are beyond being influenced by speed, because of the code and all the bugs that come with it.

Vista is only a few good things.

And you show me one good picture showing off a Vista vs. XP shot that actually makes vista worth DX10.

Vista is good for n00bs, but use your computer for something other than WoW and porn and you will see how much of bitch it is.

are you dumb or what

I'll take you seriously when you can actually formulate your own opinions and not end your posts with the first five results in Google for "vista sucks"

Yeah I did that quickly just to show you what others thought. I used vista for 3 months before I had to kick it. That's how I know.

Tell me, then, what makes vista worthy of having over xp?

Free.User Nov 18, 2007 03:44 AM

Let's not have this argument again, it's been played out too damn much.

I guess hit me because I paid $300 for my 680i board back in January (mind you it's the eVGA version), $170 for the PSU, etc etc. It just looked really nice on paper.

Dhsu Nov 18, 2007 03:43 PM

Yeah, PC component prices have gone through the floor lately. I remember paying almost $200 for 2GB of RAM last year. ;_;

Try $220.

If budget is the concern, it's definitely a much better choice to cut down to 4GB or even 2GB of RAM than to skimp on your video card (again I have to ask exactly what Tsunade is running that could be so ridiculously memory intensive). But if you have other concerns, such as heat or noise, then yeah the 3870 would be a decent choice since it's better in both areas than the 8800GT.

Uh, I think you are the only one getting angry here.

KimAykut Nov 19, 2007 01:37 AM

Yeah you guys are right. Sorry =(

I would post tits or GTFO but I still think vista sucks

spikeh Nov 30, 2007 02:15 PM

The ATI HD 3870 doesn't match up to the 8800GT's performance, no, but its RRP is cheaper. Due to the desirability of the 8800GT and the lack of supply, prices have skyrocketed and you're being forced to pay a premium for the card. A 8800GT 512MB costs well over the recommended $250 set by NVIDIA, plus ludicrous shipping fees. (Source: Anandtech) ATI can sell more if they can maintain a steady supply of HD 3870s to the consumer. The revised 8800GTS with the G92 core is on its way, so I'd like to see how that performs before spending on an overinflated card.

Now that everyone's stoned Vista to death, I like how suddenly XP is now seen as "stable and mature". Vista is rock solid, albeit finicky with drivers, and it would be unfair to compare it with XP with two service packs and countless updates.
