Emoticons lololol
Who here uses emoticons? How frequently?
Both here and on AIM, I tend to use :) :D and ;) alot. Not sure why, because I'm sure it brings my coolness level down a few notches, but I guess it's just a force of habit at this point ;) Fuck. |
Oh geez, I do it all the time. I occasionally have to go back and edit a post or two because I've overdone it a little. I'm even thinking about doing it right now.
|
The only times I use them is when I do it by accident. Otherwise it's pretty much ^_^ , =) , and =P.
Edit: Actually I use :tpg: far too much. Not sure how I forgot about that one. |
I start using them over instant messenger when I'm talking to someone else who uses them a lot. It's like they're infectious.
|
I often replace :) and :p with =P and =) but lately I've been on a :) kick.
|
I personally make use of them, but in moderation. I'm not an overly emotional person, so I guess that might explain why I don't use them more.
Another reason I don't use them much is that I feel sometimes crowd a message too much. |
I am indifferent to emoticons.
I also often "borrow" emoticons from somethingawful, though. |
I use :P a lot. I mean, I use it almost like a period at the end of a sentence. I guess I'm just always saying things that are sarcastic or never serious.
That's only on AIM and other online stuff when talking to friends. If I'm trying to sound cool or serious I have to strain to not use any emoticons. |
Anyone's ever read my posts or my journal knows that they're pretty much a :tpg: :tpg: :tpg: fiesta.
|
On message boards: :) :D :( :tpg: and :3:
On IMs: <_< = http://www.national-anime.com/forum/...efault/dry.gif and <.< I use the <_< a lot. |
Does anyone else think the emoticons on AIM look really shit? I use it to talk with ICQ users, and I'm always jealous when their emoticons pop up. Why does everyone use AIM anyway? There's no higher criteria for comparing IM programs than the quality of their emoticons, so I don't know why we don't all migrate to ICQ right now.
|
I usually use emoticons on AIM more than anything else. I really hate it when they dont have the face that you really want to use...
My reply to a light-hearted mean joke (you'd be surprised how often I get these) is usually the face >=p And of course no one offers a mean looking face with its tongue sticking out. I do like :tpg: and :gonk: though, and find myself using them off the boards as well, even if they dont make any sense to the person I'm talking to, because they dont know what the letters are. |
These days, I've been using :tpg: a lot. Mainly through PMs with people on GFF, but I usually keep the emoticons to a minimum if I can help it. I don't think it's necessary to really use in every message, but I know some people use them all the time to keep things friendly. If I'm in the middle of exchanging humorous messages with my friends, I tend to use all sorts of emoticons.
|
I have all emoticons on miranda turned off mostly because i think all default IM client emoticons are sort of stupid and i like the text versions better anyway.
Although half the time on msn i end up seeing (8) (sn) (slfp) though so yeah. |
I use all sortsa emotes. GFF-ones or otherwise. My faves here? :argh: and
They're often appropriate for RAGE. I'm a connoisseur of smilies =V |
I use them ALL them time :/ I think mostly because I don't want anyone to take offense at anything I say, so most emoticons instantly add a lighter tone. As well, a lot of the time I would like to convey at least a faint idea of what my face would convey if I were speaking in person rather than typing. Just a more personal touch in my mind, although it obviously doesn't come across that way to everyone.
:3, ;_;, T_T, :/, >=( are my most commonly used and favourite ones. |
I used to use them all the time, especially in online games, but over time I got sick of ending nearly every sentence with one (serious problem) and cut back. Now I just use two, <__> (concern or confusion) and >:E, which doesn't really mean anything but it looks funny to me. :x
(oh hell there I go again.) |
I don't use them on this board much, but I do use them. Quite frequently, actually. But not on IMs. They're bigger than the words.:(
|
I use them sometimes, but I try not to make a habit of it.
:tpg: however is useful in getting across the various nuances of what it represents in a short message. |
I use them :erm: on Gamingforce :eagletear: whenever I have a crappy short post :gonk: and I need something :lemming: to make it seem a bit more fleshed out. :cmb:
:XBOX: :XBOX: :XBOX: |
I try to be minimalist in regards to emoticons, especially at work.
However, my usage online during my private time (WoW, GFF, IM's/PM's of what very little I use) varies: :tpg: and :eagletear: are one of my favorites here. I'll use =) or :) sparingly. Some favorites I'm likely to use on WoW is @_@; <_<; and ^-^ or ^_^ though I use standard =)'s as well. |
|
I don't spam the hell out of them, but I do like using them. I just don't see why some people are so uptight and act like smilies are the spawn of satan. When you use them too much you come off looking like a moron, but I also find people who absolutely refuse to use them just seem deadpan and boring sometimes.
