Region Settings?

Is the Wii like the other game console where they are regions for each one.. so let's say I buy one here.. can my cousin use it over in Europe or will she have to buy games over here and have them shipped out to her over there?

Infernal Monkey Nov 5, 2007 10:59 PM

Yeah, Wii's region locked. European games won't work on an American system and so forth.

Nintendo early 2006: Wii's going to be region free! Honest!

Furby Nov 5, 2007 11:03 PM

Shit... Does it say it on it's website or anything b/c now I'm hearing mixed up answers... Some people are saying "no, it's not region lock.." and some are saying it is...

Forsety Nov 5, 2007 11:11 PM

It is region locked. They are even being queer about the virtual console and locking that so whenever Terranigma ends up on it American's get to miss out on it a second time even though it's already in English. ;)

Furby Nov 5, 2007 11:30 PM

damn.. My cousin is gonna have fun at Fry's return line tomorrow then..

Anyone know if the DS is also region locked?

Although, you can (or will be able to) send VC games to other people as gifts. Not sure how this will work out, though.

While it's true you can't purchase from different region Virtual Consoles. Like I can't get Hugahora's Magic Castloo Sugoi from Japan's VC from my US Wii since it only connects to the US Virtual Console. However, they are bringing over games from the PAL region that were never released here before since they are already in English and easy enough to sell. They are making some distinctions though when selling a few former Japan-only titles. They only perform minor translation and only for titles that don't need much translation at all so far like Sin & Punishment. One of these days I believe we will get Terranigma. But it'll be a while because according to Nintendo the SNES doesn't exist.

Me either. Right now you can store games on SD flash cards as backup, but you can't actually play them from it. You can't transfer games from them either, so that option's out. Right now there doesn't seem to be around the lock-out issue, which is a shame.

Neither is the PSP. Huzzah for European imports! Handheld users get all the luck.

Elixir Nov 6, 2007 10:17 PM

Modchip it.

FatsDomino Nov 7, 2007 11:13 AM

Does modchipping it allow you to purchase from other region Wii Shop stores? =o

Although, ya you did tell me you can just do emulation via gamecube homebrew but I'm just wonderin'.

Elixir Nov 7, 2007 06:57 PM

I haven't bothered, but most likely not.

Trance Machina Nov 7, 2007 07:36 PM

No getting a modchip will not allow you to purchase from other VC stores (that just sounds silly). Though it does solve region free (obviously). But if you recently purchased it, the only known way to mod it is fairly complicated.

FatsDomino Nov 7, 2007 08:19 PM

That's what I thought. Just wanted confirmation.

I even never played games that were IN my region.

There are images out there that feature emulators and roms (next to N64), so that isn't much of a problem.

And that's the easier install. :3:

Mind you, this is for the newest chipsets for the Wii. I'm assuming this is the case for Furby.
