Strategy Game of the Year?

I've been out of the gaming loop for a few years now... I'd like to buy a strategy game, a new one. What in your opinion is the best strat game of 2005? Thanks!

Soluzar Mar 22, 2006 11:06 PM

What type of strategy? RTS, TBS, or SRPG? Another kind? PC, console? Which consoles?

DeLorean Mar 22, 2006 11:12 PM

Any strategy... but as far as console is concerned... since this is the General PC Gaming section... let's keep it on PC's.

SouthJag Mar 22, 2006 11:25 PM

Age of Empires 3. Period. Best RTS of 2005.

Heh... sorry. Brain-fart. I recommend Galactic Civilsations 2, then. It's the first true successor to Masters of Orion II that has been made.

GC2 was good. If you were a huge fan of AOE2, get the third one.

Also Civilization 4 is there, if you consider that a strategy game.

Give Empire at War a try. Breathes fresh air on regular old base building, and supply gather RTS games.

Mucknuggle Mar 23, 2006 06:48 AM

Battle for Middle Earth II? But I think that was released in 2006 . . .

Kimchi Mar 23, 2006 08:40 PM

I would go with Age Of Empires III. (If it you made a topic with no year limit, star craft >.>)

DeLorean Mar 30, 2006 12:48 AM

Weird... I thought Age of Empires III sucked!! Everything was so uneven and poorly preportioned, but I guess that's because im holding it to the Starcraft Standard.

solid_snake Mar 30, 2006 01:03 AM

hey, --- lord of the rings battle for middle earth 2--- is a great real-time strategy game.
its got so big wars and custumization and some more extra stuff.:kitsune:

Kimchi Mar 30, 2006 03:33 AM

Urg, I wouldn't though those EA shits, EA sucks period.( Just because SIMs is good doesn't mean EA is good.) And yea, I found Age of Empire unbalanced, slow, but I am also comparing it with Star Craft and its uber fast pace.

Umma Mar 30, 2006 09:25 AM

AoE III is good.

What's unbalanced about AoE III? Maybe you need the latest patch...

It's a great game. It doesn't have the feel of AoK... but I guess that's just my perception. It's very well done... and the home city cards thing was a good addition; motivates players to improve their ability with one civilization.

If you want fast paced games, you should play EA's Red Alert 2. 0 Strategy, but hell, it's fun!

SouthJag Mar 30, 2006 12:20 PM

Admittedly, Age of Empires 3 is quite a bit different from the previous two Empires games and Age of Mythology. It's still good, but I had a hard time adjusting to the new pace. AoE 3 moves a lot faster as far as getting to the next age and basically ending the skirmish.

quazi Mar 30, 2006 02:21 PM

I recommend Civ 4 for turn based strategy. I haven't played any RTSs that came out recently.

Umma Mar 30, 2006 03:19 PM

Huh

Well, that's true. I remember games in AoK lasting like 2 hours. And it was more unbalanced than AoE III. Ever seen 10 Mamelukes attack a Teutonic Knight at the same time and only take about 25% of its hitpoints? Or a bunch of Huskarls take down a castle?

Of course that... games in AoE III *are* shorter, really. Either you win fast, or die fast. Hmm... It *is* possible to reach a new age in like one minute and a half. :/

And The Titans was great... one of the worse things they did to AoE III was imitate the campaign style of AoM. Not making historical campaigns, that is.

Sheesh... now that I think about it... AoE III isn't *that* great. ¬_¬

Sorry I don't touch EA shits. And yes I do have latest patch

'kay. Then look at it as a game made by Westwood. They made it; EA put its logo.

Kimchi Mar 30, 2006 05:01 PM

I'd rather put my pc on Blue screen of death then touching that.

Spike Apr 2, 2006 02:28 PM

For depth: Civilization IV and Galactic Civilizations II (well, GCII isn't really that deep for a 4X game, but it's awesome)

For fun: Empire at War, Age of Empires III, and Battle for Middle Earth

Those are the most obvious answers and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Most of those came out in 2006, but they're all worth trying out. As a side note, don't even bother with the Rise of Legends demo. It sucks and I hope the final product isn't that lame.
