Dumblewhore

J.K. Rowling outs Hogwarts character - Yahoo! News
Quote:

NEW YORK - Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.

After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."

Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."

"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."

Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority."

Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.
Rowling is such a tremendous hack it's unbelievable. I've got no problem with Dumbledore being a pole smoker, but if it wasn't worth addressing in the book she shouldn't have been addressed it at all. Mystery is part of what gives a story appeal, and conjecture is what keeps a franchise fresh in the minds of fans.

And yeah, the fanfiction. You are such a stupid bitch.

Ayos Oct 20, 2007 01:19 AM

Yes, it ruins it. And it's honestly surprising. I was quite content to think that he and McGonagall were secret lovers. A pole-smoker? ... the beard would be so... SCRATCHY...

Bradylama Oct 20, 2007 01:28 AM

That's just the way he likes it! Who are you to judge hot beard lovin'!? It's just as legitimate as furrydom.

Heh, I just read this and was going to post it.

It doesn't ruin anything at all for me. I never really thought of Dumbledore as a sexual being in the first place, as it never played any sort of part in the books. His sexuality plays no part in his actions and/or his personality in the books.

I personally like to hear details like this about the characters. I've been reading these books for years and the little details that she has been sharing since Deathly Hallows came out helps to answer things that conjecture will help with. It helps to answer tidbits that were never completely addressed and to fill out the images of smaller characters that were not well defined due to publishers not wanting to print a 2000 page book.

A student asked her if Dumbledore had ever found love. I don't know why people are upset about her answering it. Would it be as upsetting if it was a women and would the decision to announce that be labeled as unnecessary, seeing as that was not worth addressing in the book? I don't think that would be the case.

As if that were possible. A bottle of spilled ink on the page would've made for more competent writing than that fluff.

This is ridiculous. Rowling probably just said it to sensationalize the series. As if it needed the extra help. This is tacky. Why can't she just let the concept of Harry Potter die 'gracefully'?

peeack Oct 20, 2007 03:02 AM

The same reason you won't die gracefully.

Bigblah Oct 20, 2007 03:15 AM

The same reason you won't die gracefully (in a fire).

Yggdrasil Oct 20, 2007 03:37 AM

So why are all these details coming out now long after the books are done? Shouldn't all this have been included in some book?

Bradylama Oct 20, 2007 05:34 AM

I don't think she created Dumbledore thinking he'd go for a cockring, though.

Which is exactly why, only through reading the source material, nobody would ever suspect that Dumbledore was gay. This is exactly why Rowling is such a hack. If she didn't mention it in the book because she wanted to avoid the controversy then she's a fucking coward who's afraid to portray her own characters. Because otherwise she's retroactively trying to turn children's literature into a social commentary to raise the hype around the franchise, which makes her a disgusting and manipulative bitch.

He must love them magic wands. *crickets*

I don't even care about Harry Potter anymore. The ending of the final book was so anticlimactic she might as well have just ended it before Harry faced Voldemort in the first place.
And fuck the epilogue. Such a cop-out.

Zephyrin Oct 20, 2007 02:11 PM

Yeah, what a bitch. Why can't Rowling just have a divorce and custody battle like all the other famous people do?

So, gay people can't find true love?

The answer to the question, you stupid bitch, is, "Yes" or "No."

"Oh, the fanfiction!"

means...

"Wow! Free publicity!"

Idiot...

I completely agree. The books contain almost no sexuality whatsoever until later when the kids enter the teen years and start having first kisses and develop feelings for each other. And I can't recall anything about Dumbledore that hinted at his sexual side at all. It's a kid's book, and the last thing kids want to read about is parental/authority figures having sex. This feels like a cheap publicity stunt.

Why didn't she just re-write the books to say that the real reason Dumbledore kept Snape around was because of his tight asshole. Sheesh.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 20, 2007 03:37 PM

Of course he's gay. It's a well known fact that all the male teachers at boarding schools are nonces.

Summonmaster Oct 20, 2007 03:52 PM

Totally attention-gathering. Such a moot and unnecessary point that I wasn't even thinking about seems to have made its way into her statements. This would be on par with finding out that Crookshanks has 758,287 strands of fur on its body.

Bigblah Oct 20, 2007 04:41 PM

Yeah, what a bitch. Why can't Rowling just get drunk and DUI like all other famous people do?

No, this would be tantamount to learning that Crookshanks was actually a symbolic reference to the Irish Republican Army.

Bernard Black Oct 20, 2007 06:07 PM

That doesn't suprise me in the slightest. Both her publicising further and the fact that Dumbledore has stepped out of the metaphorical closet. I guess she can say whatever she wants since she made the end so final.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Oct 20, 2007 07:46 PM

In before "Snape Fucked Dumbledore" Meme nonsense

Dirac Oct 20, 2007 09:26 PM

I can't say I'd hit. He's a bit out of my age range -- I tend not to date people over the age of 100. Also, the long hair and down-to-the-testicles beard is so unattractive to me.

I find a clean-shaven look to be much more appealing. I'd definitely do someone like Arthur Weasley, or Cornelius Fudge.

Now that's some Fudge I'd like to pack!

Vemp Oct 20, 2007 09:43 PM

Can't wait for pregnant Dumbledore hentai to come out!

ramoth Oct 21, 2007 04:46 AM

I'd post something thoughtful about trivializing the issue of homosexuality and the real prejudices people face today, but honestly, Rowling has made the entire conversation a joke.

See this part that comes directly before the Dumbledore "bombshell":

Quote:

Q: In the Goblet of Fire Dumbledore said his brother was prosecuted for practicing inappropriate charms [JKR buries her head, to laughter] on a goat; what were the inappropriate charms he was practicing on that goat?

JKR: How old are you?

Eight.

JKR: I think that he was trying to make a goat that was easy to keep clean [laughter], curly horns. That's a joke that works on a couple of levels. I really like Aberforth and his goats. But you know Aberforth having this strange fondness for goats if you've read book seven, came in really useful to Harry, later on, because a goat, a stag, you know. If you're a stupid Death Eater, what's the difference. So, that is my answer to YOU.

[loud applause]
You sick fuck.
