Release Date: Whenever stores sell it
Game Website: PlayStation.com

Game Info:
Combining Ratchet & Clank’s adventure roots with an epic storyline and immersive gameplay, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction draws players into a vast, new galaxy more vibrant, diverse and interactive than ever before. With bustling cities, gigantic enemies and giant boss battles, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction delivers a sophisticated, yet humorous adventure for fans of all ages.

After saving countless planets from dreadful doom and earning intergalactic mega-celebrity status in the process, Ratchet and Clank have taken some well-deserved R&R - again. Yet, Ratchet remains restless. An orphan of the universe, he has never known anything of his past, his family, or his Lombax origins. And no one, not even Clank, can fill that void.

Unfortunately for Ratchet, someone else is equally interested in Ratchet’s origins: Emperor Percival Tachyon. In his thirst for revenge, the vile tyrant of an ancient race of foul insect-like monsters called Cragmites has festered an age-old grudge and is bent on wiping the last-known Lombax off the universe. As Tachyon’s forces ambush Ratchet and Clank in their home galaxy, our heroes realize they need to escape quickly to prevent its destruction. In a move of desperate irony, Ratchet and Clank steal Tachyon’s imperial warship and embark upon an adventure bigger than any they’ve experienced- one that will not only unravel the mystery of the Lombaxes, but also test the very limits of their friendship.

This game will rock any PS3 owners socks. And the game is actually shipping faster than expected. Discuss how awesome this game is here and drool over the wonderful screenshots. This is definitely one of the best looking games this year.

I bought a PS3 for this not even joking

The demo was pretty much more of the same, not that that's a bad thing. Oh and the water effects looked like ass. My expectations are pretty high even after playing Resistance and I doubt I'll be disappointed. I don't know who they think they're fooling with the whole "adventure roots" thing, the first three games and Size Matters were basically the exact same thing getting slightly better with each installment (except Size Matters which was shit). Deadlocked couldn't have been that much of a misstep.

I'm not too fond of the whole epic storyline thing either since they tried that with Deadlocked and the result was the sound of 500 mph facepalms all around the globe.

Nitpicking aside, Ratchet & Clank is my second favorite series ever and this will probably be (my) game of the year 2007.

I'm going to blow so much money starting from when this game comes out to the end of November. I'm glad this comes first though so I can afford it without a doubt. Dunno what else to say other than I really fucking want this game because my PS3 hungers for a game it will actually deem worthy! :(

Slayer X Oct 19, 2007 12:30 AM

Yeah. This and Guitar Gero 3 come out on the same day. Time to get a bank loan.

PiccoloNamek Oct 19, 2007 12:35 AM

Wow, how pretty. I hope the framerates will remain extremely smooth and high like in the PS2 games. That is one of the things that always impressed me about the R&C series. Even in a huge and quite detailed outdoor area completely filled with enemies, the framerate rarely went below 60.

Miles Oct 19, 2007 12:49 AM

According to one of the staff at Insomniac the final game is locked at 60fps just like the past Ratchet and Clank games. And people playing the review copy say its true from what I've heard.

Rockgamer Oct 19, 2007 12:01 PM

Man, I want to play this game so badly, but I have no PS3 yet. I loved every single one of the past R&C games (even Deadlocked was better than a lot of people said it was), and it looks like this one will be just as great. I still don't know for sure when I'll get a PS3, but whenever I do this will definitely be one of the first games I buy for it.

SouthJag Oct 20, 2007 12:36 AM

The downloadable demo runs at a pretty smooth 60 fps. For those of you who acquired the disc version of the demo, the difference is worlds apart. The disc demo ran at, maybe 30fps when the frames weren't skipping. The downloadable one is so, so much smoother.

Hopefully GameStop'll who're we kidding. gamestop'll get it early fo sho' be one of those early release retailers and I can get my copy asap.

Serano Oct 20, 2007 02:48 AM

Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to this little sucker. There aren't many developers I'd blindly buy a game from, knowing it'll be grand even before I've played it, but Insomniac is one of them. These guys redefine the word 'polish' - instead of rushing out their product, they make sure it's in the best possible state before releasing it.

Sadly, the game won't be out in Europe until November :/

Miles Oct 23, 2007 10:50 PM

Picked this sucker up today. Wal-mart had about 30 copies. All I have to say is

<3

Zeal Oct 23, 2007 10:53 PM

i thought it was a pretty decent platformer, with the general consensus being around a 9.0 (although gamespot gave it a 7.5 lol). i still say folklore is the best game on ps3 as of now, though.

highly underrated.

Slayer X Oct 23, 2007 10:56 PM

Well I would definately have to give graphical technical achievement of the year award to Insomiac for Ratchet; ToD, because this is the best and most polished game of this generation yet.

Well, IGN rated it a 9.4 (presentation: 10 -> ???). While I get the fact that it's a rather good game, I probably won't get it. I played the demo and it was okay, but definitely not 9.4-ish, again, I think that IGN sorta received money transfers or something like that.

Slayer X Oct 27, 2007 11:09 AM

Uh.... no. R&C is just simply a really polished game with some of the best graphics of this generation and solid gameplay. Hence the high scores. It's fine if it's not your cup of tea, I respect that. But it did earn every score it recieved.

EGM -> 9/10
Game Informer -> 9.25/10
PSM -> 9.5/10
PSX Extreme -> 9/10
Game Zone -> 9.3/10

SouthJag Oct 28, 2007 08:17 PM

Well, just beat the game.

Spoiler:
Wtf ending. Clear indication of a sequel, assuredly something more than that Secret Agent Clank game already announced for the PSP. The Zoni just...up and take Clank away? Fulfill his true purpose? CLANK WAS HYPNOTIZED?! What does it all mean?

Oh wait, it means inevitable sequel comin liek wut.

Starting Challenge Mode now. I got the RYNO IV before my first playthrough, and it's a pretty badass weapon. Allowed me to take down the final boss in no time. Gonna give the game a second playthrough to full upgrade all the weapons to level 10 and get all the upgrades before putting it down for a while.

Musharraf Oct 29, 2007 02:39 AM

Approx. how long did it take you to beat it?

SouthJag Oct 29, 2007 08:18 AM

Oh, I have no idea. I really cracked out on the game, but if I had to guess I'd say 15 - 20 hours. It's no longer/shorter than the previous Ratchet games, which is fantastic.

Challenge Mode is gonna take another couple hours though, just because the enemies are so much harder and the weapons have to be bought and then upgraded, so I suppose with a second playthrough you'd be looking at 35+ hs for 100% completion.

N4G.com : Ratchet & Clank FToD 60 Second TV Spot

That's a very neat CGI TV advertisement. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Kilroy Nov 1, 2007 03:52 AM

So bitter sweet. I want moar, pronto, Insomniac.

But I couldn't avoid being a bit disappointed. I would've loved to see Ratchet's weapons being more destructive. Not Red Faction, but something more. The Alpha Cannon can dismantle a giant fuck robot, but no a simple monitor with Percival? Hmmm...

Gonna play Challenge mode now.

Strife Nov 14, 2007 12:07 PM

I beat it this morning. I'm gonna have to go ahead and say that's it's one of the top 5 platforming game I've ever played. I really enjoyed the game from beginning to end. The game looked amazing, and it ran so smooth! This is the first time playing a Ratchet and Clank game and I'm pretty impressed. It reminded me alot of Sly Cooper in some aspects.

kuttlas Nov 14, 2007 01:36 PM

Oh I forgot about this thread

Well I beat it on challenge mode about...a week ago. I thought it was the best of the series until I got to Slag's fleet when I got to that 'hey, I'm not actually having fun' realization point in a lot of games these days when I discovered 1) most of the weapons were recycled from old games 2) the few new ones were really shitty and 3) the storyline is fucking terrible and they retconned the major NPC from the best game in the series to make it fit.

One thing that really bothered me was how dry the action was, it's as if they learned nothing from Deadlocked (which was the best action game on the PS2). There were only 3-4 enemies onscreen at any given time and very few of them actually shot at you. Their idea of challenge is pretty shitty too: a boss battle really consists of shooting at it while it just stands there being a target until you run out of ammo in all your guns and then go whack it with your wrench 30000 times. That, and whenever you run out of ammo (save for the boss battles) you just run to a vendor and buy full ammo for all your guns for about 1/3 as much as you get for killing one enemy. Oh, and the final boss was a fucking joke. They really ought to stick to Deadlocked's formula for the action. More explosions, large waves of enemies that actually shoot at you, and for god's sake ditch the autoaim.

I would rank it considerably better than Size Matters and slightly better than Deadlocked (since it takes longer to realize its flaws) but nowhere near as good as the original trilogy, which I consider to be the best games of last generation. Maybe its because of that exodus of Insomniac staff after Up Your Arsenal but Ratchet seems to lose something new in every game.

I thought that gravity cube in the asteroid belt was beautiful, even if playing it wasn't anything new. Probably the highlight of the game.
