somehow killed my ps2

Recently my slim ps2 has been acting up. When I go to turn it on (with or without a game) it will start for a second and go back to displaying the red light. Sometimes it will work if I leave it for awhile.

It started after my sister's friend came running into my room to see Halo 3 in his boxers while extremely high, and tripped over a cord knocking my ps2 off the table.

The only other cause I can think of is I've been playing backup dvds lately and opened my ps2 in order to tape down the sensor button, though its been fine for days after doing so.

Not sure whats wrong, I hope someone can help.

Can you please go back to GameFAQs?

Open it up and pour a large dose of epoxy into it.

I wasn't a long fall, floor is carpeted. It still works at times so it's not completely broken.

Helloween Oct 13, 2007 05:58 PM

It's a PS2. Any amount of far is guaranteed too far.

I guess you're all set then!

Nope, pretty much busted that, not a lot you can do without resorting to thermal paste.
The shock, regardless of rug (I hope you don't think that falling on to your head on a rug is going to prevent concussion), is bound to have messed it up pretty bad and opening it up yourself certainly doesn't help.

I had a feeling I would be screwed. I was just hoping that a drop of two feet wouldn't hurt it that much considering my Wii has had a 30 pound shelf land on it from off the wall 7 feet up when my mom decided she wanted to take it down one day.
Luckily it seems that if it wont turn on the first time I just leave it for a few minutes and try again it will work.

The General rule of thumb with Sony products is that they are made of glass. They want to move more consoles, so they do this in the hopes that you'll break one, and buy another.

Nintendo on the other hand, i've heard some pretty phenomenal stories.

One reason why I now have a Slim PS2, Disc Read Errors.

Yup. Its known as Nintendium:

Quote:

Nintendium

The hardest, most durable material known to mankind, discovered by nintendo for usage in their console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (Also known as: NES). Its manufacturing process was perfected sometime before the creation of the Gameboy by Gunpie Yokoi, Nintendo's hardware genius, or "mad scientist", who invented many miraculous toys for children and adults alike, though many would argue they were meant for children.

Since the birth of the Nintendo 64 (IE, N64), Nintendium has become harder to produce or find, as the quality of the Nintendium used in the Nintendo DS (IE, NDS) and Wii (IE, Nintendo Wii?) have been reasonably weaker than their predecessors, though the WiiMote has been known to resist bullets, fly straight through Television Screens, and cause injuries when thrown, and is considered to be encased in the purest, most refined Nintendium seen since Gunpie Yokoi left Nintendo and died.
Further proof its durability is in the Gulf War Gameboy:

Oh, this happened to me before. Yeah, someone told me PS2s get Disc Read Errors. I thought "Ok, if I drop it and it survives, it won't get them any more". Unfortunately it just stopped reading discs entirely. It's entirely due to the fact that the laser has lost focus.

Take it into the kitchen. To begin with, remove any add-ons you might have for your Playstation 2, like the Network Adaptor. They'll just get in the way. Flip the Playstation 2 upside down and remove all the rubber feet and square tabs. Get the edge of the flathead screwdriver or a knife underneath them to pop them out. I've circled them on the picture below — 4 rubber feet and 6 square tabs. There's a few you can leave on, but they might get in your way later.

Next, you'll need the Phillips head screwdriver for this part and you might want to mark where each one comes from. They're of two different lengths, so if you make a mistake putting them back there's only one other type of screw that might fit. Once the screws are all out, take the bottom cover off. Flip your Playstation 2 over again so it's right-side up. From back to front, peel up the cover and slide it forward, then lift it off. Be careful of the memory card, controller ports and the loading tray. Once you lift the cover free, you'll notice a ribbon connecting the power and open/close buttons to the chassis. Lay the cover down as best you can without putting any tension on this ribbon.

The last piece to remove is the black lid over the loading tray. There's four very tiny plastic screws holding it in. They're circled in red in the picture above. This is where you'll need the jeweler's screwdriver. Remove all the screws and lift the lid off. Voila! Now we have access to all the guts!

Carefully but surely, apply a thin layer of thermal paste over the white disc as shown here:

I recommend a small (smallest you can find, actually) sponge. After doing so, leave it for about an hour in open air. Put the console back together and plug all the cables in, try a game, see if it works. You shouldn't have any further problems.

Scott, I have some thermal paste you can use if you want.

What are Slim PS2's made out of, glass? My original PS2 survived falling down stairs, being dropped on a footpath (remember to do up the zipper on your backpack!), yanked off the shelf several times and the terror of kids who would shove the disc tray back in with force instead of using the fancy eject button. It also gathered six and a bit years of dust in it, clogging anything and everything (you couldn't see anything through the vents~). It didn't survive trying to load games this year though! GAMES. THE KILLER. I'm afraid my Slim is going to launch into space if I touch it.

I won't be able to go get it up there. :(

Maybe you guys can help me with a problem im having with mine. Mine will start up normally, and then play normally randomly from a few minutes to about 15 minutes, then it will make this loud skipping noise and it the game will just freeze. Note this only happens when the game is loading something, like i got to check a map, or a new area loading.
Any ideas?

Syndrome Oct 14, 2007 06:46 AM

Have you tried popping the tray and closing it again when it happens?

Kostaki Oct 14, 2007 09:07 AM

A viable solution to your problem? Buy a new PS2, and this time TAKE FUCKING CARE OF IT.

Easy, right?

But seriously, never leave cords laying out where people actually try and walk through. That in and of itself is a recipe for disaster, and your fried PS2 is the result.

There's a difference between the rare and unforeseen freak accident
and gross negligence of your hardware. OP's situation is the latter.

unknown_user Oct 14, 2007 03:55 PM

I have tried opening it and reclosing. It actually worked sometimes with the game loading up again, but I would have to do that so many times its annoying. Plus, I took very good care of it, never dropped it, didnt spill anything on it, etc.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 14, 2007 03:58 PM

That, and accidents won't get you a working console.

If you "take care of it", you won't get into a situation where you break it by accident.

If you knew this kid, it is quite understandable how he could knock it off the table.

scotty Oct 15, 2007 02:28 AM

It's not that I don't take care of it. By some shitty luck the only day that I ever had my ps2 off of its shelf under the tv was then. Wasn't expecting some half naked dude barging into my room screaming and flailing about.

So I have no idea what exactly would be the problem with it in the first place. It displays the red off light normally, I press power and it switches to green for a second before turning off again.

Oh so bullshit on that. Shit just happens sometimes. Both of my PS2 controllers are mildly busted thanks to friends that would put the controller down on a chair then trip over the cable while getting up or sitting down. I've never broken any of my console related things, but that doesn't mean I haven't had issues due to just bad luck or other people accidentally doing things to them.
