Horrible Spring Weather

Ok, so I live in Hawaii and we just went through some really bad weather, like I'm talking massive rain...

Quote:

County and civil defense officials were urging residents in the area of Morita Reservoir, which sits downstream of Kaloko Reservoir in Kilauea on Kaua'i, to evacuate due to concerns that Morita might breach.

Earlier, Kaloko Reservoir on Kauai'i's North Shore breached, spilling 300 million gallons of water.

One person was found dead, seven people were reported missing and at least two houses were swept away, state and county civil defense officials said.

The Coast Guard reported that one body was found about a mile from shore. The body was transported to the Kaua'i Medical Examiner's Office.

The Coast Guard continued searching the waters off the flood area.

The breach of the 400-million-gallon Kaloko Reservoir caused water to cover a 100-yard swath of Kuhio Highway between mile marker 21 and 22, near the vicinity of Wailapa Road. Vehicles are unable to pass in either direction, county civil defense officials said.

Officials with Coast Guard base Sand Island, which sent a C-130 Hercules and H-65 Dolphin helicopter to Kaua'i, said it received a report from the Kaua'i Fire Department of seven people unaccounted for. Kaua'i fire officials did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.

The Coast Guard continued to search a two-mile area around Kilauea Stream and Kilauea Bay for people who may have been swept downstream after the dam broke, the Coast Guard said.

Hawai'i Air and Army National Guardsmen on Kaua'i have been activated.

Emergency workers on Kaua'i are also working to divert water from the Waita Reservoir on the Garden Island's South shore. The Waita Reservoir is the largest man-made reservoir in the state and near is near the town of Koloa.

A spokeswoman in the Kaua'i Mayor's office said three emergency shelters were opened at Kilauea Neighborhood Center and Kula School on the north end and at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center on the south end.

Civil Defense officials are urging Koloa residents who live near the Waikomo Stream to evacuate to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.

A water main along Wailapa Road also has broken so residents in the area are urged to conserve water. Those affected by the waterline break are being served with portable water by Department of Water personnel

Residents of the Wailapa area said they heard the noise of the flood about 5:30 a.m., and that the water came fast and stayed high for at least an hour.

"It sounded like 10 jet engines come at us from that direction," said Wailapa Road resident Olivia Gulish. "It was pitch black. But you could see this huge crest coming toward us."

A nearby resident, Ken Koeller, said the water and debris came within 10 feet of the house where he lived.

"They say when you hear a freight train, run. I did," he said.

A few hours later, Koeller was among searchers climbing through the flood debris, looking for victims. He found construction debris, refrigerators, family photographs and bedding.

Along with this, half of my island, Oahu, was flooded and it seems that elsewhere, there is also crazy weather.

Anyone else in a place with extreme spring weather?

We had snow about 2 weeks ago, round about 10th March, it was nothing compared to the snow that Scotland though.

OmagnusPrime Mar 22, 2006 07:27 AM

Not had anything like massive rain or snow but it has been generally fucking cold. I would appreciate it if the temperature went up a few degrees, that's for sure.

Spyer Mar 22, 2006 07:35 AM

Ok, we've had cold weather here for the past... god knows how long. Its MARCH 22ND AND ITS STILL SNOWING!

Even though its just minor snow, its still fucking cold up here. Ah, this crazy planet is going to blow up soon.

EmpyreanHorizon Mar 22, 2006 09:34 AM

Eight years here and the Philippine heat is still killing me! Imagine staying in a sauna where you sweat when you walk out the door, suffocate in any public transpo while the dude next to you reeks of fishy body odor. I'm so fed up with this hot, hot and hotter season-Snow sounds good to me anyday.

PiccoloNamek Mar 22, 2006 10:35 AM

Sounds like Georgia during the summer, only the people smell like beer instead of fish.

I hope the cold weather lasts as long as possible.

b-hc.net|andrew Mar 22, 2006 01:59 PM

We've had a spurt of great weather.... just yesterday we had +11

Now Im sure other places are saying thats not much but the hottest we get here is like 20 to 25.... So its pretty nice!

nazpyro Mar 22, 2006 03:46 PM

It was 80+ degrees 2 weekens ago (technically still winter). Two weeks later (now spring), it's in the low-20s and even the teens in some places, including wind chill. Welcome to Maryland. What the fuck. Hi spring break.

TheDude Mar 22, 2006 04:00 PM

I'm in the same boat as those who aren't experiencing torrential rains and blizzards, but are having a rather miserable spring. I was hoping to get out some this week for a little outdoor exercise, but it's been too damn cold. What fantastic timing, too, being Spring Break and all... Next week's looking splendid, though. We'll see how that goes.

I hate cold weather with a fucking passion, so it'll be nice when it's over for a few months.

Take me on this one, having come from the Philippines too:

Hot weather > Cold.

You don't want to shovel snow and watch continuous rain slide be here. It's depressing to watch.

Rydia Mar 22, 2006 05:19 PM

It's still raining here, and there was a thunderstorm a few days ago. Today wasn't as bad, but apparently it's supposed to rain on Friday again.

Ryuu Mar 22, 2006 05:20 PM

Today is March 22nd. It is 2 days after the official start of Spring.

...

It snowed this morning and is something around 40 degrees Fahrenheit...

Acro-nym Mar 22, 2006 05:44 PM

In my region, we've just experienced a shift towards colder weather. It hasn't snowed and nothing's gotten frozen, but that might come. The highs are in the fifties and the lows are in the thirties. It isn't horrible weather, but it is unusual.

Ballpark Frank Mar 22, 2006 06:05 PM

It snowed yesterday morning. Nothing serious, but not the way Spring should start.

You're probably right, but I grew up in countries with 4 seasons and extremes in weather (try desert winds; can't sweat at all) Watching the people here wear jackets in 90 degrees of nothing but sun makes me question their sanity. As for shoveling snow, if there ever was snow ...*sigh*... well, that's what my little bro's for.:edgarrock:

Jiraiya Mar 22, 2006 08:30 PM

I had snow in NY today. It sucks so bad. I just want this winter to be over with.

daguuy Mar 22, 2006 08:31 PM

i live in St.Louis and the weather's crazy. one day it'll be sunny and 60 and the next day it'll be freezing rain and snowing and all that stuff. right now it's snowy from yesterday (it was warm and sunny monday) and it's melting and we got a tornado warning a few days ago. i get alot of tornado warnings around here

J-Man Mar 22, 2006 08:43 PM

On Vancouver Island, we got a small dump of snow a few weeks ago. It has been pretty much a years worth of seasons in the weeks following that. We've had wind, rain, and a few hours later it will be beautiful and sunny out.

WTF?!

Exactly.

It was definitely high 70s around where I live - shorts and t-shirts, going to the beach, etc. Now it's just cold...why won't this winter end!!

Gordon_Freeman Mar 22, 2006 09:31 PM

It's cold here too, with little sign of improvement. If the sun would just come out for a couple of days and take the snow from my front yard, i am sure that would put me in a much better mindset.

Lady Miyomi Mar 22, 2006 10:30 PM

It's been really cold here as well. The wind was blowing hard earlier, which made things worse. I hope it warms up soon!

T0X1Qu3 Mar 22, 2006 10:35 PM

My bf just told me that it was hailing in Las Vegas, NV and that it's been pretty cold there

o.o

I wanna see hail

Ballpark Frank Mar 22, 2006 10:54 PM

No you don't. It hurts.
