RAM Problem
 

So I noticed the other day while putting my desktop back together that for some reason my RAM is running at 166MHz instead of 200. I change it in my BIOS back to 200, and Windows won't load (but it gets through the BIOS stuff with no problem). I change it back to 166 and things are working dandy.

Today I take out each RAM stick individually and test it in each of the slots (I have two 256MB chips in dual channel and one 512MB). I get the same problem with each one and it always works when I set it to 166mhz no matter the RAM configuration is.

I know it used to run at 200mhz, but I don't know how long it's been this way. Also, I know it should be able to go at 200mhz since CPU-Z says all of my RAM is PC3200.

Any ideas? :(

Judging by what you've said, I'm gonna assume that you're running an AMD and that you haven't screwed with overclocking.

Have you tried running memtest86+?

The symptoms seem like the RAM's timings or the CPU's clock speed or Vcore have been changed. Maybe double-check those settings, and have them set to their defaults or "Auto" settings.

Everything should be set to automatic in my BIOS, though I do recall some of the voltages being changeable. The clock speed for the CPU is correct (2.08GHz for a XP 2800+ after multipliers and whatnot)).

The RAM timings also seems to not be able to be changed in my BIOS as even when I set it to manual I wasn't able to scroll over them to change them.

I'll try te memtest86+ tomorrow when I have a little more time.

Oh yeah, and no overclocking.

So for some reason when it was set to Auto for the RAM settings it was put to 166mhz, I changed it to Speed or some setting like that and now it's running at 200mhz with no problems.
