How do others act around you?

When you tell them that you listen to VGM msuic and movie scores?

I had people at work ask me a lot what is on my ipod and what am i listening too?

So i proceed to show them my playlists and there faces immediatly go like "uhh WTF?"

Now that person thinks im weird as hell for the kind of music that i listen to.

How do others react around you when you show them that you listne to VGm and movie scores?

I'm as embarrassed as hell to show folks my gaming or anime music on the iPod =( I've had folks snag it and go "HAY WUTS ON HERE" and I'd bitch them out for it. This one person snagged it as I was partway in to a song under the genre of "Gamingforce Best Song Contest 2005". They were all ":gonk: what is this shit"

I used to get embarrassed over it big time, but I made up a bogus story that someone almost broke my iPod once, so now I'm uber protective of anyone touching it. The story works better than "I has fourin mmoozick".

Like I've said before -- I'm a closet nerd. Even my closest of buddies just recently found out I'm a gamer. This one dude I went to college with turned out to be an anime fan, but the two of us would only talk about it when no one else was around (found out he was one at the end of Freshman year). We were both just as ashamed ;( I kinda lol'd about how I found out he was an anime fan. He was listening to music before a class kind of loudly (I was just behind him and could hear it) and it was, like, the only Utada Hikaru (is that right?) song I've ever heard. I spoke to him after class and said "hay man that's an awesome song. I have it on my computer~"

He said "oh shit... You watch anime?" And thus our friendship was solidified =I

As for movie scores, I don't see the problem. VGM & anime, yes.

On the contrary, I'm rather more open in terms of telling people what kind of music I like. I don't try to persuade anybody to stop listening to mainstream altogether, but I do try to introduce them to the instrumental material that I listen to.

I've told my family, a girl I know, hell even one of my classes at school that I listen to video game music and film scores. I was surprised nobody made any remarks (ie "that music sucks ass"), I'm guessing it's because they can't say it's stupid to listen to that kind of music when they haven't heard it for themselves. And I'm kind of glad they don't. The amount of people that take an interest in VGM/film music is peanuts compared to those that have an instant boner for the newest piece of shit #1 Radio Hit (I'm not talking about ALL mainstream here, because I know about the MEC and their taste in more obscure material. I'm talking about Daniel Powter, James Blunt, Avril Lavigne, etc.). To say that someone is an idiot for taking an interest in something with a lot of musical variation, and then turning around and popping in a CD in your car stereo with unoriginal cRAP and with the bass cranked up to full blast, making it so loud that anyone within a two-block radius can hear, is quite hypocritical.

Hi Xroc.

Only a few friends are understanding enough to know that I listen to VGM and stuff. If any other people ask about it after seeing it on my iPod or something, I use the excuse "I listen to VGM to get ideas for my movies," which is actually true. Regardless, some people are just mystified by the concept, and I'd rather save them the trouble and save me the embarrassment.

...Who cares? Not to be inflammatory but anyone who judges someone unfavorably based upon playlist (unless you are listening to Cannibal Corpse...and even then a stretch) is not a very cool person. I listen to a lot of VGM and I can't expect for anyone outside of that medium to really understand what VGM is without sharing some silly and often false generalizations. I can do my best to explain to them that VGM is far from 'bleeps and bloops' but they probably simply don't want to hear it.

If someone asks, I'll tell them I am listening to Megaman 2, and if they don't like it, I'll inform them to eat my ass with a spoon.

Hey, I like Cannibal Corpse :(

RainMan Sep 18, 2007 04:15 PM

Well cmon now.

Cannibal Corpse has gained some infamy for their horror fiction-themed album covers and lyrics, including gore, mutilation, murder, torture, rape, and death.
I just don't think these are cool, but thats just me. A lot of people like CC, but a lot of people also like scat fetishes so... :gonk:

You a'ight. ;)

DarkLink2135 Sep 18, 2007 05:10 PM

I really don't know. Because I don't give a crap if anyone finds out I listen to VGM, movie scores, or even if they find out I'm a weeaboo. I don't go to any lengths period to hide it. As I don't care what they think, I generally just don't notice.

I like CC, but you are one step ahead of me if you actually understand what they are singing about :).

With me it's a case of people asking what I'm listening to, and when they find out what they lose interest and no more is said. I don't think anyone has ever criticised some of my more obscure music tastes, and for that I guess I'm lucky. I've a few friends who appreciate the genres, but then they love anime and gaming as well.

Wall Feces Sep 18, 2007 05:32 PM

I don't think rape is cool, but I do find humor in their lyrics because of how insanely over-the-top they are. Ever hear of the band Anal Cunt? Look them up. They make Cannibal Corpse look like Hanson.

Back on the subject though, it's mostly with women that I don't share my taste for VGM with. At this point in my life, me and all my guy friends are cool enough to where they could atleast not find me any weirder for liking VGM. Girls on the other hand... The only one who I openly discuss it with is Temari. I had a semi-traumatic experience when a girl was going through my iPod one day, found my VGM, and made thing awkward the rest of the day.

DarkLink2135 Sep 18, 2007 09:21 PM

All you have to do (even if you don't feel it like me and others here) is just act like they are being a complete asshole by poking fun at you for listening to VGM. They end up feeling like an ass, or if they don't, they at least see that you don't care.

Hell, I still listen to some boy band crap (Savage Garden) from my dark ages of musical taste, and I don't bother to hide even that.

Summonmaster Sep 18, 2007 09:39 PM

Sometimes I'm embarrassed and just reply with a stupid answer like "a song" when asked what I'm listening to, especially for anime songs or obscure tracks. The few people that have asked, didn't take much interest or changed the subject quickly, usually, and were hiding a look of "oh wow nevermind." Other times, they try to comprehend it but have trouble even only at the point where I try to describe the game it's from or the artist.

lord-of-shadow Sep 19, 2007 06:15 PM

In my dorm last year, I was one of the ones who played music loud enough for half the floor to hear - all of it VGM, pretty much. I never had any comments about it.

I've never hesitated to tell people about it, aside from a brief stint in my early highschool days. If they don't understand my taste, that's their loss, not mine. I've never hesitated to tell a girl about it, either. If they think it's weird enough to affect their image of me, then they're not the sort of girl I'm interested in anyways.

I don't see any reason for anyone to be embarassed or ashamed at all.

When my friends make fun of me for listening to videogame music, I make fun of them for not listening to it. One of my friends heard the orchestral version of Aeris's theme once and was all "this is incredible, where did you find this music?" and I was like, "it's a video game, BITCH." And then she didn't believe me and said, "No way, that stuff is just beeps." Whatever.

I'm not embarrassed by it. I make fun of mainstream music.

Ozma Sep 19, 2007 10:25 PM

I don't give shit to people who tease me just because I like to listen to anime music and VGM. They're the ones stupid enough to say that it's not their level. Some are bad, I agree, but some are even better. Like Aerith's Theme mentioned above. One of my friend insisted that this piece is too high-leveled for video games.

I still remember their expressions when they looked into my collection and found out that I 'accidentally' mixed some classical music in it. Like they're trying to say "This guy's worse than retarded.".

Is it THAT strange?

TheKnightOfNee Sep 19, 2007 10:26 PM

I've found that the same people who make fun of me for listening to video game music would also make fun of me for listening to classical music, orchestral music, electronic music, and a few other genres. Or, essentially any non-mainstream music. And once I realize that their musical tastes are completely awful, I stop caring what they think about my musical taste.

But most people turn out to be pretty cool with it. And I've even had a few people take interest in it after hearing some of my music.
