Not sure what's wrong with my desktop :/
My best guess is that either a key is "stuck down" (although not physically) or I've just screwed up some setting. I'm on a new laptop too, so I might have pressed one of the weird buttons on the side of the keyboard which don't do anything except mess up your settings.
Anyway, here are the symptoms: The desktop seems to not be responding Click and drag doesn't make a selection box Can't click on the desktop at all Can't drag anything onto the desktop Can't right click on the desktop Double clicking the desktop opens up the startmenu I'm on Windows XP btw =x Have I locked the desktop somehow? I remember one of my friends had done that, but...anyway. When I click on the desktop, the active window doesn't actually become inactive. Like you know when you click away from a window, the title bar greys out? I don't actually use my desktop. Don't have a single icon on it, so I guess that doesn't help since I can't see if anything works xD;; Anyway, thanks ~ |
Is it still like this when you shut down for 1 minute, and restart?
|
Yes, I have tried rebooting my computer -___-
|
Does rebooting to Safe Mode restore desktop functionality?
|
This is a hunch (a very large and probably innacurate one), but to me it sounds like someone took away desktop privlages for your account. They can either be changed manually, or changed with TweakUI/WindowsXPPowertoys, a Windows tool.
|
Hmm. The weirdest thing is that double clicking the desktop opens up the Start menu. It would be quite curious too if someone had revoked my rights, since...I'm the only account on there anyway. But I'll give that a go, since it might have happened by accident. Thanks.
I'll try the safe mode thing too. If safe mode makes it work again, does that tell us anything about the nature of the problem? [edit] Just read that site. Okay, I guess that makes it a tiny bit clearer :/ |
If you can get in using safe mode, maybe your account is all screwed up, so making a new account should hopefully fix the problem. If safe mode still exhibits the kind of messed up desktop, then it may be screwed up system settings, which will necessitate a System Restore, or, at the worst case scenario, a reformat.
