MKV Burner and Stuff

Hi y'all, again in the help threads... God I feel so n00by!

I've gotten Azumanga Daioh MKV files from my friend and want to burn them into a DVD that you can view on a DVD player. This is for my little cousin who's just gotten into anime, but OMG does not have a computer. WHUT????

I know that there are converter programs and Nero can convert them as well, but I'm not sure how to keep both English/Jap dubs and English subs for the converter programs. It also takes too long when converting on Nero.

Are there any suggestions? Thanks in advance as usual.

You could check if your cousin's DVD player is capable of playing back DivX files. This normally means MPEG4 APS frames in an AVI container. Sometimes these standalones also support external subtitle files which have to be in the same directory as the video file.
So if you are in this situation you could simply try to extract the video stream out of the mkv container into a AVI container (you will get into trouble when trying this with h264 material) and extract the subs into an external file. Then correct naming, burn everything to a data DVD and check if it works.

Otherwise you have to reencode everything to MPEG2 to get a standard compliant video DVD. I don't know about the subtitles but I think you have to convert even these because the video DVD standard uses some bitmap font technique (can anyone verify that?)
