Just How Retarded Are Australians?

Quote:

A MELBOURNE schoolboy has cracked the Federal Government's new $84 million internet porn filter in minutes.

Tom Wood, 16, said it took him just over 30 minutes to bypass the Government's filter, released on Tuesday.

...

"It's a horrible waste of money," he said.

"They could get a much better filter for a few million dollars made here rather than paying overseas companies for an ineffective one."

...

In response to the Herald Sun's inquiries, the Government added an Australian designed filter, Integard, to the website yesterday, which Tom cracked within 40 minutes.
84 mil, right down the crapper (spinning clockwise). What's really retarded isn't the national porn filter, though:

Quote:

Family First Senator Steve Fielding, a long-time campaigner for cyber safety, said cracking the software showed the need for compulsory filtering by Internet providers.

"You need both. You need it at the ISP and at the PC level," Senator Fielding said.

"The Government has not listened to common sense and it leaves kids exposed."
Why do you guys hate the internet? IFTC.

Muzza Aug 25, 2007 08:56 AM

Huh, funny, I dry wretch every time I use the internet. The rumours must be true.

In all seriousness though, it's sad to hear about this whole phenomenon. The way the government's handing this whole internet thing is disastrous anyway.

And how about this Tom kid? He's pretty cool.

THE PORN STARTED HERE! KILL!

...and here

Regulating the internets? Australia seems to be all about censorship and 'decency' these days. Take this for example.

Alcohol ban for Australian town

Quote:

The town of Alice Springs in Australia's Northern Territory has become a dry zone, with drinking banned in all public places.

[This] will ban the consumption of alcohol - also known as grog - in Aboriginal communities as part of an attempt to stamp out child abuse.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6925406.stm

How can they take away a person's right to get drunk? I mean the bit about preventing child abuse seems decent, but banning alcohol is only going to make the citizens more pissed off and more likely to beat their children. This will possibly become just another way in which the aborigines will come to the realization that they have been screwed.

I have nothing against Australia, nor do I believe that such choices are indicative of intelligence but these latest moves are certainly a bit perplexing.

Some nut freaks out about porn and the internet here every few years. But fortunately they never know enough about it to actually do anything.

It just gets media attention because they're annoying and loud, but it gets swept back under the rug after a week or two.

Also: Rainman, there's a much bigger problem in Alice Springs (which is right in the middle of about 8 several thousand kilometre wide deserts) than you're probably aware of. I don't know if anybody here has read anything about it. But the government recently basically sent in the SWAT team to stop sexual abuse of Aboriginal children.

The Australian government has a pretty shitty track record of dealing with Aboriginals, so I'm sure in about another 30 years somebody is going to get angry about their culture being removed or their right to be sexually abused.

Either way you pretty much can't win.

Incidentally this newspaper is basically the Australian version of The Sun online. There are far more stories about world farting champions than actual news stories so try not to take anything they say too seriously.

p.s. lol internet porn

The same way they take away a person's right to get high. :eagletear:

They oughtta talk to the Chinese. Their filter seems to do well enough for a much more diverse range of subjects.

189 million dollars for an internet scheme (their words) is a bigass rug.

hi im john howard, i need a preference deal from the godfag party in order to get me over the line this november (no one likse me nemore ._.)

Pretty much every 'initiative' and press release since Feb/March has been a product of the Libs' pissing eskies over the polls.

Re: Brady's concern (he used the r-word so I can tell it's serious business), no one's regulating anything. The only extant content laws I can think of relate to material hosted on Australian servers, eg. certain plon, hate speech, information for criminal activity (remove to overseas server, VOILA). ISPs will never filter porn, or anything for that matter. ISPs don't even throttle our BT traffic, and we torrent more shit per capita than anyone else in the world. The filter is simply a government provision which individuals may opt for.

AWWWWWW, ****, SON!

But, seriously, it's just a matter of time before this sort of thing doesn't happen in the world's most prominent countries. Give 'em time. This Internet thing is pretty daunting.

You are certainly right. I am not terribly aware of the specifics of aboriginal culture and especially of the sex abuse which purportedly is identified with Alice Springs. However, I don't see how taking away alcohol is going to cut down on this kind of behavior. 'Prohibition' is a blanketed device which probably won't solve anything substantial... I could be wrong.

Suffice to say, you know fucking nothing. Congratulations! If you don't know anything about the culture / problems of the area, why speak at all?

Because this is on a set of forums whose members are from around the world? So what if he didn't know about the sexual abuse of the Aboriginal children? That's not the point. The point is he doesn't understand the correlation between the ALCOHOL and the child abuse. He evens makes the comment that the removal of alcohol will make things worse. He's just a little confused about it all.

At least Decoy Goat answered in a civil way.

RainMan--you may be right. The prohibition might make things worse, but the government has to start somewhere.

Cal Aug 28, 2007 03:56 AM

Yeah, somewhere. Maybe like adopting even a single one of the 93 recommendations set out in the latest IndigeReport #990357739J.

Alcoholism's just as epidemic among the North's whitefellas, in reality, and the reason why 'SEND IN THE FUCKEN ARMY/PROHIBITION LOL' is never listed is because grog isn't so much a catalyst for sexual abuse among koori as it is a lubricant (figurative). In a lot of the national cultures, girls are promised to older men or elders in a formal contract, and basically they become their property. There was a case awhile back when a girl bashed and ran away from her betrothed, due to a period of abuse (read: Battered Wife syndrome). Yet a week later, in accordance with cultural dictates, her own grandmother marched her back to him.

Howard isn't interested in real solutions. Army and police and martial crackdown gives him Law'n'Ordah points for the coming election. And besides, this shit's only one of a dozen fights he's picked with the states this year. There's a new one every month (I think South's due for a go).

Well basically, there's nothing to do in Alice Springs. So they get drunk and wave their didgeridoo's around the little kids. Boredom solved! Also it's no secret Australia hates the internet, join Telstra Bigpond today for the freedom and speed of space-age broadband! Plans start from a mere $40 a month with a whopping 512 MB download limit!

Maico Sep 10, 2007 07:21 AM

They should hire that kid to do their filters for them. I bet he would take a hell of a lot less money, and he'd know how to better protect the system. Same way with how the government uses captured hackers or whatever to help hack-proof their government systems and databases in return for a commuted sentence. Takes one to know one.
