Need good Free FTP softwore for OSX...

Title says most that needs said. I tried Cyberduck for a while, but had issues with it specifically with permissions and corrupt uploads.

Any recommendations guys?

Cyberduck's pretty much it when it comes to "free." I swear by Transmit, but it's for pay. I stole it for years, but finally bought it.

Whats wrong with OS X's built in FTP client? I've never had any issues with it.

killmoms Jul 22, 2007 03:08 AM

What, the command line one, or the one in Finder? The former is hard to use, the latter doesn't let you upload, for Chrissakes.

Edit: Wow, somehow I never noticed that.

I feel really smart right now. ;_;

The command line ftp program isn't that difficult to use, but it is cumbersome. The first thing I did was to install ncftp for the command line.

As for a graphical solution, I have to second Transmit. Been using it for a long time now, and It works very well. It isn't free, but there are ways of getting around that.

I use the duck myself, mostly for moving media files between my G5 and my media server/HTPC G4. It's a rock-solid FTP client with a nice interface and file manager. It's a little bitchy about "You have open connections! Really quit? You have open connections! Really quit?" which can get irritating considering there's a new update available almost every time I launch it and each update requires a restart of Cyberduck, but I think the warnings can be turned off somewhere. I'm just too lazy to bother.

Killmoms is right, too, about the Finder FTP client. It's shit. I haven't used it since it stuck on a connection to a public FTP and I had to restart my system to get it to let go. Don't even bother with it.

Using the Terminal is fine if you like the CLI, but a GUI client is usually better if you're deciding on-the-fly what files you want to move around.

I use, in conjunction with Firefox, FireFTP. It works really good for me, never had a glitch. ;)

I use this thing called Fugu, and I like it.

If you're a University student, you can get Fetch for free (otherwise it's $25). I like Fetch a lot; it's simple and straightforward to use.

Here's the form to fill out for the free education license:

If you're not a University student, then never mind.

cyclonejack4 Aug 20, 2007 04:07 PM

Have you tried asking around what could be making it corrupt your uploads?

I'd stick with cyberduck. I love it and its nice and simple with loads of features. Thats always a plus in programs for me. :)

CelticWhisper Sep 24, 2007 10:54 PM

Apologies if this counts as a necro, but I'm very near to rescinding my recommendation for Cyberduck until they build in a way to limit the number of concurrent fucking connections it uses. We fortunately have some very understanding FTP admins here, as it got me insta-kicked from a number of GFF FTPs for saying "Oh, gee, more slots, ME USE MORE CONNECTION."

Apparently there's a way to turn it off via some UNIX hackery. This should not be required just to tell a goddamn FTP client to behave itself.

I am not happy with Cyberduck right now.

killmoms Sep 25, 2007 09:10 AM

Agreed. I had to implement 1-conneciton restrictions on all accounts that connect with CyberDuck on the FTP I run because it's such a little bitch about that.

I still stick with my recommendation of pirating Transmit (and eventually paying for it). Panic rules.

I'd second the Fire FTP extension, it's feature rich and fairly mature.

harry Oct 9, 2007 05:17 PM

I use Transmit. It's simple, cheap (not free - sorry), and it has a lot of features!

Adamgian Oct 10, 2007 09:04 AM

I'm having the same Cyberduck issue of it constantly wanted to open new connections, but for uploading to the webserver I use, it's been great. For FTP downloading here though, it's rather horrid.

TheReverend Dec 6, 2007 03:31 AM

Tried out FireFTP, and it's working great! Thanks guys!

Filezilla is the client we use at work (im a student tech at a university). It recently ported to Mac. Before that we used Fetch.

Sound & Vision Dec 16, 2007 07:49 PM

I use Flow, Flow : FTP Done Right
It's not out yet, still in beta, but it's easily becoming one of my favorite clients... and I'm an active Transmit user.

tiimbz Mar 7, 2008 09:49 AM

i use Transmit every time.

What you also could try is muCommander (based in norton commander) which has built-in ftp client..

or use your browser: ftp://login:password@ftp.server.com

hope that helps!

rudds May 12, 2008 12:44 PM

I use Filezilla on Windows and love it, and as mentioned it's been ported to OSX now. I'd give that a look.

CelticWhisper May 12, 2008 05:27 PM

2nded on FileZilla. I'm so fucking glad it saw an OS X port, as I was quite fed up with fucking about trying to get Cyberduck to work right. I can confirm that the OS X version works just as beautifully as the Linux and Windows versions. It's also nice to have a single uniform client to use on all my various and sundry workstations.
