Hey, 360-chan! Are there any more bad games left? "Have a 3D Guilty Gear RTS!"

Arc System Works has announced Guilty Gear 2 Overture for Xbox 360 according to the latest issue of Japanese publication Weekly Famitsu.

Unlike the previous installments which were 2D fighting games, the sequel will be a mix of real-time strategy and 3D fighting game. Players will select characters - such as Sol Badguy, Sin, among others - referred to as "Masters" in this game. You will also have units to move around and give commands on the field map in RTS-like fashion. When in contact with enemy units, the battle then becomes more synonymous to a 3D fighting game.

Guilty Gear 2 Overture is currently 80% complete, but no release date has yet been announced.

Hahaha. So this explains why there's been so many remakes of Guilty Gear XX. They've been coughing them out while secretly, they've been working on their ultimate weapon: A 3D version of Guilty Gear in RTS fashion.

I'm for innovation and unique games, but what's next? A Chrono Trigger dating sim? I mean, yeah, Shadowrun from an RPG to a fucking FPS with resurrection and magic and shit made everyone point and laugh, but I don't know why they don't just start working on GGXXX instead.

So it's basically Guilty Gears Musou, joining Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, N3 and whatever Sengoku Basara sequel Capcom is probably working on. They're still hugely popular in Japan, so I'm not THAT surprised, but the subject matter is a bit unexpected. But they did it with Gundam, so I guess anything is fair game now.

Slayer X Jul 20, 2007 09:00 AM

This is a stupid idea. Wouldn't be quite as much of a disapointment if we heard that they were also coming out with a new Guilty Gear fighting game, but their not. So before this game is released it's a disapointment.

However if it's based on the "hundred year war" of Gears VS Humans and it has a decent story & gameplay, it could be worth while going through maybe once.

@Qwarky
I would say more like Kingdom Under Fire1/2 -Xbox from the sounds of it.

Yes please. I'd do anything to get Lavos to notice me in class. Anyway, I see this game has crates, so that's alright.

Remember when every single 32-bit game filled the levels with crates because they ran out of ideas? Yeah, those were the days. Happy days! =) I HOPE THE MUSIC IS GOOD.

Well, the name "Overture" seems to imply that it will serve as the precursor to a true (2D fighting) sequel to GG.

Basically, they want to milk the original series as much as possible, but they weren't willing to go all the way to XXX.

chato Jul 20, 2007 08:16 PM

Well as long as this is nothing but another "REHASH" GGX2 story, Getting a 360 is a hell no, but if it was a 3rd installment...

More crates!

I'm interested in this basically just because it seems so terrible. =)

I'll buy the soundtrack as long as they keep it heavy metal. The game sounds really bad and looks dull (is that supposed to be Ky two screens up?). Come on...3D fighting? RTS? From the makers of the best and deepest 2D fighter? Puh-leease. To quote Chipp: "Goddamu! Burrushiittu!"

Nah, that's a new character called Sin. Not much is known about him yet.

Rotorblade Aug 18, 2007 02:00 AM

Magazine scans, article seems to spin it as taking the series in a new direction and such. Can't quite argue that, since I find the polar opposite of "lol = series + genre switch satirical joke failure" to be just as worthy of dismissal.

Golfdish from Hell Aug 18, 2007 02:23 AM

THAT Ky? Older and wiser? Wussier and even more feminine than the average Nomura protagonist is more like it.

Thanks for the scans...They reveal the game being even more washed out, humorless and ugly than it looked before and completely dashed my hopes this would be anything respectable, but thanks a lot anyway.

So THIS is what those scathing reviews for Dust Strikers and Isuka did to Ishiwatari's sanity...Oh well, at least Accent Core is set for US release in a few weeks. It could be the last good Guilty Gear game ever...

Elixir Aug 18, 2007 08:59 AM

Oh wow, look at those scans. It's like they're, on purpose, trying to make every Guilty Gear character gayer and gayer. The guy in the first scan (I won't even point out the human portrait being messed up) looks like he's wearing lipstick and Sol is starting to look like Auron. :(

Rotorblade Aug 18, 2007 09:03 AM

That was always the big pull with Sol and Ky and anyone usually related to that Holy Order. The whole appealing to the yaoi fangirl thing.

Nick Aug 25, 2007 10:37 AM

I wonder what this means for the 2D fighter franchise?

Also I really hate to see what they do to Faust, if he's even in the game.

360-chan loves you all ok, she doesn't choose to have stinky idiot developers make bad titles for her.

don't hate her for being beautiful.

Sword Familiar Aug 25, 2007 11:42 AM

Save the hate for the demo :). I actually think it looks pretty good.

Slayer X Aug 25, 2007 02:09 PM

It could be good gameplay wise, never know till we've tried it. However I think design went down the hole when they gave Sin a denim flag for a weapon.

The genre's already long-dead (outside of MUGEN and the doujin scene...Oh, and a High Resolution Super Turbo. :gonk:)...This just helps dig up the body, piss in the hole and pour maggots over it before covering it again. It better not be the end of the traditional GG franchise, otherwise Ishiwatari's completely and totally lost his mind.

Poor 360-Chan...:(

Nintendonomicon Aug 25, 2007 09:42 PM

This looks bad and sounds bad. But so did Metroid Prime when it was first shown. Come on, let's give this game a ch... is Sol flying over Alexandria in that scan?

That's exactly the point. *folds arms*

Forsety Aug 26, 2007 06:54 AM

I don't think any amount of wishful thinking is going to make this a good game. These designs alone for the characters just further perpetuate the 'myth' that Japan can't make good character designs...! :(

I disagree, Sammy themselves are still clearly trying with that new high res fighter they're making (Battle Phantasia?), and Capcom's re-entering the genre themselves. I think if these new efforts prove fruitful (Especially the high res ST) we could see heightened interest in the genre from developers.

Edit: Also, the 2D fighting Guilty Gear franchise (Which I was speaking of) isn't exactly long dead when Accent Core just came out.

Slayer X Aug 26, 2007 12:34 PM

Actually Accent Core came out a good while ago in Japan, it's just taken a year + to bring it out in NA.

Also Capcom isn't really re-entering the genre. Their new 2D fighter is just a cash grab on he Devil Kings franchise in Japan, it's not going to be anything near EVO material. And the SF2 remake isn't anything new really. Udon is just redoing the sprites.

So other then KoF XI for the US this year and KoF XII for Japan later this year, there's no REAL 2D fighters in the pipeline for near future release.

Nintendonomicon Aug 26, 2007 12:43 PM

Well, two or three companies releasing one fighting game every year each doesn't exactly prove that the genre isn't dead.
I do agree that if these games are successful, some interest in the genre could return, but it's not like we're gonna have a flood of fighters like in the mid-to-late 90s.

Slayer X Aug 26, 2007 01:03 PM

Well not in North America at least. While the FPS genre has never taken off in Japan, and therefore have a flood of RPGs and fighting games there. NA mostly gets a flood of FPSs with a few RPGs and the odd fighter from a core series. (like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, KoF, and the odd Guilty Gear)
