PS3 60GB Pricecut Confirmed

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.

In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for $479.99.

Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the system's library of available games.

He said Sony would be releasing 100 new video games during the current fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as the hack-and-slash action title ``Heavenly Sword.''
So if I would have waited 8 months I could have gotten a bigger harddrive and a free game. At least non PS3 owners can get one for $499.99. The extra 20GB isn't worth it just yet. I think I've only used about 10 or so of mine since I got my PS3 in December. But if you planned on getting Motorstorm I guess it would be worth it.

Funny, I saw a 300 GB External for $100 at Best Buy. Oh well.

At least now price drops are possible. $599/$499 is still too much though.

Karasu Jul 8, 2007 10:05 PM

I remember the Sega Saturn and Playstation being at those prices back in the day, so I guess it doesn't surprise at how expensive the new generation of machines are. Either way, I think it's awesome that the ps3 got a price cut, if only Ace Combat was gonna be released on that...it would have been a done deal. Oh well, maybe i'll get it in the future.

mortis Jul 8, 2007 10:06 PM

I agree. I cringe at having to pay 250 U.S.D. for an iPod or such, so you can only imagine how I feel at paying DOUBLE that for a gaming system.

I suppose I'll wait until the PS4 comes out. I do wonder though what the price of a PS3 will be by then (if it will even be under 250 U.S.D.)...

Golfdish from Hell Jul 8, 2007 10:16 PM

Still too much, considering the PS3 library, but a step in the right direction (and probably out of necessity more than anything).

Skexis Jul 8, 2007 10:16 PM

Meh, I thought Motorstorm looked okay, but it was never one of my "must-have" titles. It would be nice if they put Motorstorm up on PSN for a reduced price, but other than that, I think we all saw this coming.

And yeah, 20 gigs doesn't exactly do much for me when I still have 43 or so after formatting. Plus PS3 owners can plug and play external hard drives, which if I'm not mistaken, 360 owners can't.

cubed Jul 8, 2007 10:19 PM

I will wait to see what those 100 games are gonna be before I make my wallet to cry once again. I'll probably buy a regular 360 before a PS3.

speculative Jul 8, 2007 10:43 PM

Interesting. Sony just can't give up the idea that people want to pay $599 for a PS3, so they are still giving them that option even though as mentioned 750GB external HD > 80GB PS3 HD (which is only 20GB bigger than normal) and Motorstorm will probably be a budget title soon after release...

A better idea to move more units would have been a price drop and the inclusion of Motorstorm with the system.

UltimaIchijouji Jul 8, 2007 10:50 PM

Its not really pissing on us, because we knew eventually they'd drop the price. The fact that they're adding on 20GB more isn't much of a big deal since you can buy a 200GB HD for about $100. Motorstorm also isn't a great title, but bundles are good.

Like said before, it's not the best step yet, but it's a step in the right direction that they needed to take. The console will be much more desirable with this and a slew of good games come Fall.

Slayer X Jul 8, 2007 10:56 PM

With the system at the maximum generally accepted price of $500 for a console will make the PS3 a worthy competitor come fall and onward. Sony has NEVER been the quickest out of the starting gate, however their slow and steadily growing library has ALWAYS been their key to succes.

As for this thing about pissing on people who already have the system. I think the majority of early adopters are usually realists and for thoes who arn't should come to the turms with the fact that price drops are guarenteed to happen. And if they don't like that then that's simply too bad because no one else is gonna care.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jul 8, 2007 11:16 PM

Oh, so this is just waiting game.

In that case, I'll just wait for a further price drop. 399 sounds super to me.

Infernal Monkey Jul 8, 2007 11:38 PM

Do they still make the 20 GigaBiga version in America? If so they only need to make one more now (maybe a 500,007 GB version) and people can go for one more, Connect Four™. THEY COULD EVEN INCLUDE A VIDEO GAME VERSION OF CONNECT FOUR IN THE BUNDLE. This is why I should work for Sony.

SuperSonic Jul 8, 2007 11:55 PM

Alright, not bad with the price drop but it's still a bit expensive. I'm also taking into consideration that they haven't gotten all the bugs ironed out yet (I can say the same for my poor 360...damn red ring). There's also the problem with the game library for the PS3. There's only one game that interests me right now and that's Ninja Gaiden Sigma. However, from what I've seen it's the same story from the Xbox version. Anything else interesting on PS3 are titles I can just play on the other systems. Until the PS3 gets some good games out *cough* MGS4 *cough*, I see no rush in getting a PS3. Let the price drop even further by then, Sony. :D

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 is getting Ace Combat 6. I think I read that it's only a timed exclusive...

I don't know how big of a deal this may be, but what about the emotion engine that was included in all of the initial batches of PS3's? Probably not a deal breaker or anything to justify the $100 we could have saved, but we all knew a price drop was comming eventually anyways. Sooner the better, if you ask me.

It is nothing more then speculation, really. Their has been speculation in regards to it, but no offical annoucement from the people who matter; Namco.

It will most likely be on the PS3, but right now this rumour has as much legitimacy as the one about MGS4 going to the 360.

BTT, I think this is a shitty move by Sony and it seems they only did it to counteract the recent 360 annoucement in regards to the 3 year warranty extention. This would have had a far more profound effect if Sony at least waited to annouce this when a little thing like games were actually avaliable for the PS3.

As of Currently, the PS3 has only two must-get games which themselves only apply to niche genres, that are already better covered on the PS3's competition.

I doubt this will boost PS3 sales by much, as most people it seems are waiting for the games and really don't care about the price point as much as they care about the current lack of games avaliable on the system.

Miles Jul 9, 2007 12:34 AM

If I were Sony I would have waited until they release some of the big guns that people are waiting for. Then at the same time drop the price so people would be more determined to go out and buy one with the super awesome exclusives that just came out along with an up and running home. Instead they decided to do it now when it still doesn't have that great a library of games.

Oh well.

Radical Jul 9, 2007 01:01 AM

Pisses on 60GB owners? Were you expecting them to never drop the price? This is good news if anything.

Musharraf Jul 9, 2007 01:14 AM

Absolutely. I don't exactly know how any PS3 owner could be "pissed" about this. I mean, the more people finally buying a PS3, the better, right?

Solis Jul 9, 2007 01:16 AM

The $100 "price drop" (although it's more like replacing the 20GB, Wifi/cardreaderless PS3 with the 60GB one) really doesn't sound too bad. I don't see much use for the 80GB system though, you can get a standard laptop harddrive that has over double that for under $100. Packing in Motorstorm seems like something they should do for all the bundles instead of just the $600 one. Still, $500 for what the system has seems pretty fair.

However, I'm kinda hoping this means the 20GB variants will turn up cheap. My local Pawn America had used 60GB PS3s for $500 already before this price drop, so if they drop the used 60GB PS3 price down to $420 or so, I could easily see them having a 20GB model for around $350. I could definitely go for that.

Well, not less than 8 months after launch. I'm sure if most people knew it would drop in less than year they would have waited to buy one. But when your system sells so bad I guess you do what you gotta do. Maybe they were waiting for E3 to do the price drop just because they have an amazing line-up of games to show off.

I do feel sorry for my friend who just bought a PS3 2 months ago. He could have saved 100 dollars.

Well, all things considered, they did fix all the jaggies with last-gen games, and they got upscaling for DVDs and such. What bugs were you thinking of?

Or, did you mean, waiting until the library of games gets bigger?

What a weak reason to feel sorry for someone. It's not like someone took anything away from him; he knew the price and what he gets for it, and he was willing to pay it. If he thought it was worth 600 dollars, it's not like he can suddenly complain OH SHIT NO 600 DOLLARS WAS TOO MUCH, SHOULD HAVE WAITED FOR 500. And if he got it two months ago, you could say that he paid less than two dollars per day for using it, which sounds reasonable.

What I'm saying here is that anyone who feels pissed on after this is a retard. Did they specifically expect Sony to only make a price cut after (a year/two years/whatever) in order not to hurt their feelings? Even if I had already bought a PS3, I would much prefer they reduce the price even more, because I'm kind of interested in not seeing the console fail.

Actually, 8 months has been pretty standard for console price drops in recent generations. The PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Xbox all saw $50 or $100 price drops around then, and with all the complaints about the PS3 because of its price, it was pretty much inevitable that a price drop would happen sometime soon. In general, the systems released later in a generation will have price drops pretty quickly. But again, this is more like replacing the 20GB system with the 60GB one rather than a "universal" drop in price.

Now if only Microsoft would follow suit and discontinue the 360 Core and replace it with the Premium...

Inhert Jul 9, 2007 02:17 AM

I think the bad move here isa the 80gb version mainly because now the problem of the ps3 is the price and keeping the same price even for now 80gb, people will still not buy it. The price cut of the 60gb version is a good move.

I didn't think they would have cut the price that soon, but when you look at it, Sony is losing big money now because the console doesn't sell enough...

with the games that are this fall I think it will help sell the console.

btw why is this not in the official ps3 thread?

Musharraf Jul 9, 2007 03:54 AM

Actually I expected them to lower the prices in November/December for Christmas Sales.

Also, this has already been discussed in the PS3 thread, so we might buy a one-way-ticket to Mergetown
