Geometry Wars: Galaxies
Watch the demo and be amazed.
One of my favorite and most addicting games from XBLA coming to the Wii. It is said to have the Retro Evolved game from XBLA plus some new elements and enemies for single player. There's also co-op multiplayer and I believe they said it's coming out in the fall. Wii, prepared to be blessed with the awesomeness that is Geometry Wars. |
Coop sounds fun but they need to add shittons of new stuff to make it worthwile. As epic as it is, its still just a rather simple 5 minute game.
|
Trying to think of an example here...oh, if you've ever played Trauma Center and you dealt with the virus Paraskevi, remember where if you cut it, it splits into two faster halves and so forth until it gets to like 16 little ones and then you can destroy it? Yeah, that's what they did with one of the battles on Geometry Wars where it starts with a couple of big shapes and as you shoot them they divide into smaller faster shapes.
There's another new enemy in the game that's able to mutate other enemy shapes. |
I really can't see how this game validates a "full, packaged retail release" as they put it. The game is pretty simple, and I really don't understand how a few bells and whistles justifies a probable $20 price tag when the original game was out almost 2 years ago for $5 (it was also available on Steam for $2.50). Also, the idea of needing to "link up" both versions to have access to all the content in each of the games seems a bit of a stretch.
Still, a Geometry Wars on the go would be pretty cool. I might pick it up if it ever drops to a budget price of around $10. Will the DS version have online multiplayer? |
They really didn't talk much about the DS version. The only thing mentioned was that if you have the Wii version and own a DS, you can download the Retro Evolved game to your DS.
|
Bumping this because the game's been out for a while and because I'm totally addicted. Does anyone else have this? If so, thoughts/scores?
My best score is in Trainer Eis (love the tiny playing field for some reason), with a score of about 11,200,000. That's somewhere around 130th on the online leaderboards, with first at 39,000,000 or so. Something crazy like that. While I'm not very good at them, I like BAT- and MIN- planets too. |
Got this for Christmas from my mom. It's a different beast from Evolved on the 360, that's for sure.
|
I'm getting a Wii for Geometry Wars: Galaxies. It's one of those games that I just have not gotten tired of, a new classic you might say. Unlike Geometry Wars: Waves, Galaxies manages to add to the simple formula of pick up and play from Evolved and stay interesting and fun.
|
I've barely touched up on the game since I've gotten it. I've played Retro Evolved and the difficulty is a bit harder...the gameplay is actually faster on it. I've also played the first galaxy level and it was very interesting to say the least.
I'll get into it more once I'm done with Metroid, but Geometry Wars is crack no matter what console you play it on. Yes, it is that awesome. |
Geometry Wars: Evolved is about the closest thing to "Perfection" that I've ever played. I'd be shaky about any other installments, since it's hard to add to a game like that and get anywhere. I can only wonder where they want to take the game after Galaxies, because they really do seem like 2 entirely different games with 2 entirely different objectives.

What's the selling point behind Waves?
|
It's available in Project Gotham 4. There are no lives, just one go, no weapon upgrades, and the new gimmick is that you have to take on a wall of enemies that shoot from the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the screen respectively. You basically shoot a hole for yourself to slip through, there's a new type of enemy that you can have reflect your shots for more points. The game is extremely unintuitive compared to Evolved and more to the point, not fun.
|
You know, there are some planets in Galaxies that might fit that bill. Red squares come flying in from any side in waves, and you usually have shoot them down to stay safe. You don't actually have to punch a hole through anything, but it'd take some careful dodging to completely ignore them.
|
I'd wager that they didn't remove the special weapons leaving you with the worthless peashooter and no lives to deal with the stuff, though.
|
I think one or two of them give you only one life and no bombs. I'll have to check at some point.
|
It wouldn't be mission based if there weren't missions that challenge the player to keep playing while "not having fun."
