Official Survival Horror Discussion Thread!!

Survival Horror fans may remember this thread from old GFF. It was moved my Quarky to the General Video Gaming since not only PS2 have one of the best Horror games.

Discuss here all things that refer to this type of games like type of scare or what was the scariest moment of all. Share your felling about certain game and what do you think about the others.

Do not hesitate to post any news about upcoming games and release dates. For the start let's hear some comment on Rule of Rose that not long ago appeared in Japan but not words are spoken about USA release. What type of fear does it use? Is it worth importing or downloading? Do you lose a lot of plot playing in JAP version?

Although there's already a thread on this game over at Warp Room I suppose I should inform others who avoid it like the plague. This game is called "Sadness" and is being developed for the Nintendo Revolution. Read below.

“All I can say now is that it [Sadness] is going to be a gothic horror which will scare not with the amount of blood but sheer atmosphere. Imagine a game in which you do not use guns or knives but you will have to protect yourself with the objects you find exploring the ground – a stone, a stick, etc.”

“Some examples of using the controller – you swing a torch with it to scare the rats off, you slit the throat (controller as a piece of glass of a knife); if you want to climb the wall you will have to hook a rope over the piece of a wall sticking out (controller serving as a lasso). And this is only the beginning. The game will be for single player and single player only. For an adult player with strong nerves. Let me mention that the scenario will have associations with narcolepsy, nyctophobia and paranoid schizophrenia. The scenario will surprise you.”

All I can say is, Nintendo is going to bust out of the "kiddie" mold with the Revolution.

I will DEFINITELY get this game. Even if it doesn't live up to hype, it will STILL be fun. It'd probably be as if Shadowgate and Manhunt had an intimate love child.

On the topic of Survival Horror, I still believe that Eternal Darkness was severly overlooked. Oh ignorant people, MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES!

Resident Evil 4 redefined Survival Horror :D.

I agree, totally. Eternal Darkness was awesome, my favorite Silicon Knights game.

I will say it again. Most fucked up game since Silent Hill. And that is a good thing. Overlooked so far I think.

Sadness seems to be taking the Condemned concept of using objects in the environment around you to protect oneself. That is not revolutionary, but I am sure it will expand on what condemned has done. Plus with using that so called controller and all.
However, sometimes you do get a pistol or shotgun in Condemned, but even if you do find one it is realistic in that it only has ONE ammo clip in and how many shots in the clip varies as well. There really is no ammo around so you are forced to use stick, stones, axes, hammers, etc.

It really is an original game with a amazing story and atmosphere. It takes the Chronicles of Riddick/Call of Cthlulu viewpoint (First person) and mixes it with a Silent Hill type atmosphere. It is not scary like Silent Hill, but totally creep/crazy.

Plus it has the concept of FORENSICS. yay yah high tech stuff =p

Comdemned Criminal Origins allows players to experience a heightened level of psychological tension as they use their instincts, forensic tools, and melee combat to track serial killers and bring them to justice. Gamers play as Agent Thomas, an investigator in the FBI's Serial Crimes Unit (SCU), whose pursuit of relentless serial killers leads him through urban environments filled with sociopaths lurking on the periphery of humanity
The periphery of humanity cannot be emphasized enough.

The story gets real complex and you are immersed in the game real quick because of probably the best graphics ever seen in this genre, and as well as sound effects/music. Although SH probably used the latter two more efficiently.

I can't wait to get the sequel to this game, because the story is not wrapped up at all at the end and could lead into such insane things. I heard an expansion may be coming. Also, the forensics could be enhanced to be so much more complex and play a larger role in the game. Looking forward to that.

It is coming out for PC eventually for people without a 360. Developed by Monolith and published by SEEEEEEGGGA.

Those that have played F.E.A.R. and Condemned (another title from Monolith) know that F.E.A.R. is reasonably scary, while Condemned might require some gamers to take a break every once in awhile so that they don't have a heart attack.
ps ask Colonel Skills
