Next-Gen Civilization for Consoles

Civilization games, from veteran programmer and games designer Sid Meier, have for some time focussed on the PC market. However, the series is to make a return to the console market early next year.

Civilization Revolution is scheduled for release on unspecified "next generation consoles" and handhelds--but publisher Take-Two refused to be drawn on specific platforms.

Meier said of Civilization Revolution, "[This] is the game I've always wanted to make!" The latest incarnation will retain the original style epic single-player campaigns, along with new features including real-time interaction with leaders and advisors, "extensive" multiplayer capabilities, and integrated voice and video chat.

There will be 16 civilizations to "master and lead to victory," a variety of famous historical leaders to play as or against, and a streamlined time scale for a more action-based feel. The online multiplayer mode will feature team battles, head-to-head battles, and free-for-all matches. Additionally, auto-matching, ranked games, leaderboards, achievements, and downloadable extra content will all be available.

The first Civilization game was released by MicroProse back in 1991 on the PC, Mac, Amiga, Atari ST, and Super NES, and was subtitled "Build an Empire To Stand The Test of Time." The single-player turn-based strategy title had players expanding an empire through the ages, and was one of the first in the 'God Game' genre. It was followed by a host of sequels, and other similar titles including Age of Empires and Sim City also drew inspiration from it.

Civilization: Revolution is being developed by Firaxis Games, and will be published on Take-Two's 2K label. The game will be released on as yet unnamed "next generation consoles and handhelds" in Spring 2008.
Hahaha what the Hell? Making a game for a franchise with little familiarity in its intended market takes balls, especially when it sounds like they're moving away significantly from normal Civilization rules.

I imagine most console gamers out there have at least had a little bit of experience with Civilization and wouldn't mind a chance to get back into it.

I just wonder how they'll have to modify the game to make it feel like it was actually created for a console instead of being an awful port.

It'd probably work okay on the Wii so long as they work on some good cursor calibration. Same goes for the DS.

I like the Civ games, but I just couldn't imagine playing it without a mouse.

It'd work okay on any console, it's not like Civilization is some real-time zergrushing shit where you have to make fifty clicks per minute.

Worked alright for Civ 2! Text was almost impossible to read in-game, but now we live in age where 100,80078p TV's cook dinner and so forth.

I mean, it was the ULTIMATE version and everything!

Haha, awesome. I just started playing Civ 2 again about six hours ago; I've had a pretty bitching game going with my brother.

If they're departing from the Civ rules significantly it's going to be another clusterfuck of Call To Power proportions. Seriously, fuck that glitched mess of a game. I haven't even touched Civ 4 yet.

Oh, but Revolution has a "streamlined timescale" and a more "action-based feel."

It's the game Sid Meier's always wanted to make that he couldn't before, apparently.

To me it's more of the sheer number of shortcut buttons you have on a keyborad that you won't be finding on a Wiimote that'll make it difficult to play.
