Seagate Hard Drive Problem
 

Ok, now I know I have the five year warranty on this, but I really would like to be able to recover all the music I had on it. It's in an external case, and whenever I start it up it makes an odd, hollow sounding clicking noise. Like something is revolving or moving up and down and hitting the metal. And making the whole thing not work. Any ideas?

The Click of Death, eh? To recover stuff you'd have to spend it to a professional service and pay hundreds if not thousands. It's dead.

All my music (and more importantly, porn) out the window. Fuck. Actually, I bet I can recover the music from my iPod, though, so no big loss.

Try cooling it down and it'll give you a few minutes to get stuff off it. Some people suggest putting it in a plastic ziploc bag or something similar, placing it in the freezer, and then after it's cold enough, hook it up.

Is this bullshit? Can anyone confirm this? Earth?

It's actually true, that works sometimes. It might work long enough to get your data off, but you need a new drive STAT.

Drives fail. They get old, it happens. You just got unlucky.

The freezer thing will often work. I've used it. However, it will work for a few hours at most. Then the drive is just as dead as before. The clicking sound is a classic sign of dead drive. Don't ask me why the freezer thing often works. I understand hard drives to a limited extent, but the freezer thing makes no sense to me.

On the plus side, most HDD manufacturers are very, very good at honouring their warranties, and you shouldn't have much trouble obtaining an RMA.

Now to put the drive in the freezer and find my warranty.
