KOTOR and KOTOR 2

I recently finished KOTOR and am now in the middle of KOTOR 2. I don't understand the overwhelming attraction to these games. In fact, I found KOTOR to be pretty dismal in terms of story - everyone aside from HK were pretty bland in their characterizations and backstory.

A lot of people cite that KOTOR 2 is an inferior sequel - but I have to admit I'm having a heck of a lot more fun with it, given it's more colorful cast.

Can anyone tell me why everyone raves about these games though? Have I just grown up past RPGs?

Well, according to mainstream, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games are better than sex. But, bear in mind, about 95% are making a baseless assumption in the process of saying that. In regards to the sex part.

KOTOR was fun when I played it. A few years ago. It was okay. If you want a nice PC RPG, LeHah, I recommend Baldur's Gate I & II.

KOTOR 2 I never tried. Don't think I will. Also, bear in mind that if mainstream enjoys it, that doesn't mean you certainly will. Just means there is a good chance of it.

I loved the first KOTOR. I've played through it countless times. I think I've chosen every single dialogue choice. I think it's mostly the characters and story that drew me in.

KOTOR2 was good until the last quarter of the game. Then it goes straight down the tubes. That's when you'll notice just how much they rushed to finish it. A shame too because you get a good story with zero payoff.

Ive played through KotoR on both ends of the story's plot twists. KotoR II however, I couldn't get into at all. Im not sure what it was, but the game seemed far less interesting then the first one did.

As Gechmir said, BG1 and BG2 are also excellent dnd-based pc rpgs. To each is own i guess.

All KOTOR 2 had going for it was the better looking robes and armor. I am pretty surprised there was never a mod to take the jedi robes from 2 and put 'em in the first game. If there was, there would be no point in playing the second game at all IMO. :)

Really? I thought the characterizations were great, especially compared with nearly every single character in an RPG to date (I may be exaggerating a bit there, but I really did like all of the characters in the story). The villains seem a bit lacking, but overall, I really liked the emmersive quality of the games. They made you feel like you were in the Star Wars Universe. HK and Canderous are amongst the best, but Carth and Bastilla are great characters too.

The 2nd one, yeah, it does leave you with quite the let-down. Good game, but not up to par, especially considering the build up it had from the first game.

I think the thing that got me in this game was that the voice acting on a whole was fantastic. I wish you could have chosen a voice for your character too (give a few different options, like the Baldur's Gate's do...although those ones get annoying after awhile) to actually speak his or her lines, plus more customizability in you character look would have been nice. Still, I think they are amongst the best RPGs made to date.

This is first and foremost my biggest problem with KOTOR. That you could remove the word Jedi - and it wouldn't matter. The things in the script that you can identify as "Star Wars" could be removed and not have it affect the story or characters or game any. They could've called it "Super Sci-Fi Generic RPG Game" and gotten the same rating from IGN.

I tried to like Bastilla but she eventually felt as a lame excuse as a love interest that... doesn't amount to one, really. Carth was just kind of "there". I used him for battles - but he didnt have much use to the plot structure except as a guy you found in the Ebon Hawk's cockpit.

Thats what I've heard. Im waiting for the perverbial rug to be pulled out from under me.

If it had been more polished, KotOR 2 could have easily been a better game than the first. The glitches and skipped content though (Several scenes near the end of the game that wrapped up plot lines of individual characters were left out. The text was left in the game itself though so we can at least find out what was supposed to happen.) made it into a promising, but hollow-feeling sequel.

I really can't see how people say this ending was bad compared to the first games' though.
Spoiler:
Good job for destroying the Death Star Star Forge. Here's a medal look R2 is back and good as new.

I actually liked the gameplay of KOTOR2 because it was just more refined than KOTOR. Plus the new powers and stuff were great.

In terms of everything else, KOTOR was a lot better.

Spike Mar 18, 2006 12:41 AM

I enjoyed KOTOR when it first came out, but I found KOTOR II to be VERY boring. Not because it didn't live up the the first game's expectations, but because I simply found it boring. I guess my taste in games changed really quickly.

Forsety Mar 18, 2006 12:50 AM

Or it just shows that KOTOR 2 was not a good game. Whichever, really.

Okay, yeah, I can see that. But I really don't think it would be the same game without lightsabers and such. Maybe it was just the combination of everything (plus the fact that there hadn't been a decent Star Wars game for a very long time...SNES ones if I remember correctly).

When I played it, it was quite the noticeable thing. You're going along having a grand ol time, and then...what the fuck?! How'd I get here? Plus, very choppy story, while there...

Given that KOTOR and KOTOR 2 got pretty high ratings and sold well - why has there been no announcement for KOTOR 3?

David Deluxe Mar 18, 2006 08:42 AM

I'm pleased with the fact, that there won't be a new KotOR game every year. Obsidian Entertainment should be quite busy with making Neverwinter Nights 2 right now and BioWare currently develops Mass Effect and Jade Empire 2.

Actually, I enjoyed both KotOR 1 and KotOR 2. Sure, KotOR 2 wasn't something new anymore and it felt unfinished and uninspired from time to time, but altogether it was still a good game. However, compared to KotOR 1 its locations and characters were clearly inferior. There's nothing to say in respect of KotOR 2's ending, since it sucked anyway.

For those who are interested in the deleted content of KotOR2, this Wikipedia article might be interesting. Spoiler Warning~

There's also a statement regarding a possible sequel.

Darkelf Mar 18, 2006 10:04 AM

For me, it took me a while in deciding whether or not I would like KOTOR and so after much deliberation I went out and bought it, and had a great time playing it. The characters are varied and interesting, the locales are beautiful to wander in. It's also a pretty big game with lots of story, quests and epic battles.

But then some months later I got KOTOR 2 and that one didn't hook me at all. I got past the first part on the space station but then all of a sudden the story became less and less interesting and I finally gave up on it. Maybe I had a case of KOTOR overkill, especially after playing the first game quite intensively. Or the game just didn't feel as polished and absorbing as the original. That just my opinion really...

I found something interesting recently and this might be for the people that thought KOTOR2 felt unfishished and rushed. It's called the KOTOR2 Restoration Project and could make a flawed game into a sublime one. Here's the link:

There have been some rumors and hints at KOTOR 3. All we know is that it may be being worked on right now. But that's about it. Just gonna have to wait and see till later this year or 07.

But there is going to be a KOTOR 3. There's still alot in the story to be finished up. Especially after KOTOR 2. Since the game was rushed that game leaves alot of questions unanswered instead of answered. Plus, Lucasarts isn't going to leave a money maker like KOTOR alone. They're going to milk it as much as they can.

KOTOR 1 was kind of generic. But it was more enjoyable to me than 2 because the game is actually finished. At the end it gives me the feeling of completion.

KOTOR 2 had potetnial but thanks to it being rushed and left unfinished it became a crappy game. It's fun to play but once the story falls apart and you hit that rushed ending the game is killed. That's *if* you can make it to the end. There's so many bugs and glitches it isn't even funny.

If Obsidian was given more time to complete the game instead of being forced to release it by the holidays KOTOR 2 would of been great. The game isn't as black and white as the first one. It goes through alot to show you both sides of the force and the balance there is between the two. That every choice has a huge impact and that a good action isn't always the right one. That in reality that good action is actually bad.

Kreya has to be one of the best game characters I've ever seen. Alot better than the characters in KOTOR 1. It's just too bad she's stuck in an unfinished game. =/

I just hope when they come out with KOTOR 3 they tie up the loose ends, answer the holes in KOTOR 2, and finally reveal this threat outside the galaxy. I just wonder how they will go about choosing the looks for Revan and The Exile. Because not everyone went with the canon sex/looks in both games.

I love the Kotor games.
Kotor 1 had an intriguing story, great characters and was epic.
Quite wonderful.

But I always had more fun *playing* kotor 2.
Being evil is far more fun here.
You can take control over slavers, get loyalities from the Orderons and have them send their force sensitives to you to train, etc.
For the first 2/3 this game is much more fun, but the last third sucks badly.

Still, I cant wait for the next game!
