Problems with CS

Well, I couldn't decide on the gaming forum or the Help Desk. So I just chose HD. Anyway, I'm a long time fan of CS and I've been enjoying it very much up until about the time I bought my new mobo, which is also the time (after I had installed everything back on) CS decided to stop connecting to servers, I frequently get stuck and am forced to either Reset or (if I can) Alt-Tab and close CS. I'm getting stuck on retrieving server info. Now I read this could be a problem with my ports, but everywhere I go there has been little explanation (and no help from Steam) on how to do Port forwarding to fix the problem if that is the case. So what I was hoping is that maybe some of you are also CS players and could help me locate my problem and help me fix it.

Are you using any firewall program and how long do you wait till you reset/close CS? Also how many servers have you tried?

I don't have a chance to play CS much, but I have had one time I thought I had to do that myself. Tho for some reason it was just taking a long time to get on the server (it was not a slow server or that I had a high ping it was just slow to connect)

I've tried many servers, maybe around 15. And as for how long have I waited, depends on how long i want to sit there staring at an un moving screen, I've let it try to load for about 10 mins once and nothing happened. And on a rare occasion, my cmoputer resets itself automatically.

I do have PC cillin, but I've had it for a while. I dunno, I'll disable it and see if it works.

It won't be a port forwarding issue unless you're behind a router. Even then, I don't remember CS requiring me to go forwarding ports.

Have you tried reinstalling HL and all of the mods? Is it only CS that can't connect or is it any game through Steam? Can you connect with any other online game?

I only play CS online so I cant say if its the only one or not, but I have reinstalled it, and I AM behind a router but I did hook up directly to my modem to see if that was the problem and it wasnt... I can connect to some online mmo's I play, but Right now CS is the only one I play over the net that is having any problems. I did, however connect succesfully to 3 servers after shutting down my firewall, so I think it might have something to do with that..

You might have to list either CS or the ports it uses as allowable traffic if you want to leave your firewall up while you're playing CS.

Then again, I don't think the firewall is super-necessary on there since you're already behind a router (unless you've been playing with DMZ settings).

Nah, The Firewall won't be neccesary, as long as I remember to turn it back on.

You can't specify a firewall rule to allow Counter-Strike traffic? :/

I have unblocked it, if thats what your saying. If not then no I can't because I don't know how.

You should since CS runs off a specific port you can just tell it to let that prog you that port. I know it is no trouble with windows firewall.

FannKiba Jun 3, 2007 11:11 PM

I already gave access though to I think 4 different ports. 2 on Steam and 2 on CS itself... I would usually only have to do it with one port yeah?

Port forwarding won't be necessary unless you plan on running an online server locally. You do however, need to allow full in/outbound access for both hl.exe and steam.exe; or specify "TCP/UDP bidirectional on port 27015".

Something of interest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windo...er-Strike.html

Can you tell us what firewall you are using? Also, which ports did you forward for hl.exe?

FannKiba Jun 10, 2007 05:19 AM

My firewall is just the regualr Windows Firewall, used with Micro PC-Cillin. The ports that I forwarded, I cant quite remember, all of them because its been awhile, But I know I did 27015 and 27018, And a couple of the max ones too, it was like 27035 or something high like that...

Thanks for the link i'm checking it out right now, ok i'm kinda new to changing info in the properties of the shortcut, but where exactly do I add what that guy is saying?
