Google Maps.. Street View!

Where did they get this from? They are working with Immersive Media, a company that has an eleven lens camera capable of taking full, high-res video while driving along city streets. Each captured pixel is geotagged and primed for consumer use. Their main clients up till now have been city planners and the defense industry.

This feature is awesome! 360 panoramic view of almost every block of your favorite major city!
Actually for now it's limited to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver, Miami, and New York. I'm sure they'll try to expand the database in the future.

Check out my neighborhood!

Any of you guys live in any of those cities?

Grundlefield Earth May 31, 2007 03:35 AM

Microsoft's Local Live had this prior to google I believe. However, looks like google expanded upon their small implementation.

Magi May 31, 2007 04:15 AM

Hmm, they didn't have that features around my house. :<

Servbot#42 May 31, 2007 07:07 AM

Personally, I like the directions that Google Maps will give from New York City to London. Check it out!

Giro0001 May 31, 2007 01:18 PM

It'll be cool when you can look at your own house.

Bernard Black May 31, 2007 05:02 PM

Maybe they'll expand it to England at some point...

It must be weird to look this stuff up and then see yourself walking down the street or something.

That is so awesome, I wonder how often these images get updated, if they do update them. striped phantom I checked out your neighbourhood and its really cool how the pictures are so clear, even when you zoom in. I could totally see that van's license plate.

Dark Nation May 31, 2007 09:09 PM

Neat idea. I hope they do this for Phoenix in the future.

Dopefish May 31, 2007 09:10 PM

Boston is a cinch.

Dullenplain May 31, 2007 10:05 PM

Hmm, it looks like they got the images by driving down a street with a video recorder and took the screenshots at relevant points. Interesting idea. I would like to see one done of Houston, especially downtown, uptown, and the Medical Center/Herman Park area.

This is what they're using (or at least something similar.)
from Immersive Media.

NO, THE GOOGLE VAN CONTAINS A BOMB. ANYONE TAKING A PHOTOGRAPH IS A TERRORIST. CLOSE THE CITY.

People have already found hilarious things with this - There was a story on Digg a while back in which someone was caught by the camera leaving a strip club.

If you go to Times Square, an ad for Yahoo is on the big screen they show NBC Nightly News on.

My friend that lives in San Francisco got totally weirded out when I described - in great detail - a crack in the side walk in front of his appartment window. It freaked his freak until I explained what I did.

Infernal Monkey Jun 4, 2007 11:33 PM

I saw this on the news last night. Apparently someone has already complained because when they viewed their house, their cat was visable through the window. I would too, what with all those dog predators using the internet.

Muzza Jun 5, 2007 12:17 AM

Ha, I saw that news story, too. That cat did look a bit shifty, anyway.

I think this is a great step forward in technology, albeit a controversial one. While I can't really imagine people searching through other people's houses on the 'net, this thing (Google Maps) does have the potential to make people feel insecure...but like a spokesperson said, you can have your house removed from the maps or something to that effect.

Hell, I'd feel insecure with all of the dog predators lurking the maps, like said above. =O

The scary thing is, this is just what the public gets to see. There could be some real time top secret version where you could be seen picking your nose through your bedroom window and then proceed to scratch your ass.
