I just want to point out that New Quack City once again plays slower and at a lower pitch when you use the stream above.

3 Points: Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~

I am a sucker for Suikoden and its music. With the three Celtic collections being some of my all time favorites how could I not give this full points!

2 Points: Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99

First half of the song makes me think that this comes from some sort of RTS, however when the piano kicks in this song really starts stand out for me.

1 Point: Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge (Game Rip) - New Quack City

A very funky track, did it really need to loop twice? I don't think so, none the less I still feel it deserves at least a point.

orion_mk3 May 29, 2007 06:43 PM

The Gods Awaken - Jooli's Song A good compromise candidate from its week. The predominant mood is laid-back and relaxing with a bit of a mysterious edge. As is often the case, I love the acoustic guitar, but not on the electric. Some good music here, but it's also very inconsistent.

Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle Not a bad choice; a spry track with a vague swing style. It doesn't set my world on fire, but I like the piano and the melody's not bad.

Battle Gear 4 + Battle Gear 4 Tuned Original Soundtrack - To a distance This song just barely clawed its way to the top in a cutthroat week. It's relentlessly cheesy and packed to the brim with 1980's pop music fixins, though it manages these elements better than some. It's appealing, though primarily because it reminds me of songs from my youth.

Mahou Shoujou Ai 2 "transformation" Full Arrange Album - pathetic battle arrange "distortion of the space" Not nearly as pathetic as the average techno wastelands that pass for SoTW nominations in the genre; the piano is far and away the best part, though there are long and dull loops to compensate for this.

Immortal 3 - Ork I gave this points during its week, but I've grown less fond of it as time has passed. The piano at the beginning is just a tease; the track's true nature is techno loops. It tends to wear thin after a while.

Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~ I generally like Suikotunes, but generally dislike the limp arrangements thereof that are vomited up across the pond. The fiddle parts of this song are excellent, but the rest is a morass of everything that's wrong with the state of Japanese orchestration.

Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge (Game Rip) - New Quack City I was very unimpressed by this piece in its week; I'd go so far as to call it the weakest track of the lot. Groove and jazz aren't my favorite genres, and the song's near-total lack of melody means that it pretty much slides by on genre staples and cliches.

Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99 I gave this one first place in its week, and it remains an above average to strong contender. The steel guitar? Good. Strings? The "real" ones are quite nice; the synthy ones are sort of annoying. The piano part? As is so often the case, it's the highlight of the piece. I've got a fever, and the only cure is more piano.

Not a bad bunch, I guess. I've got positive to middling feelings about all of 'em, and the worst of the bunch isn't ear rape either.

3 pts - To a Distance
2 pts - Battle
1 pts - Route 99

Eh, half and half on most of what's up there, but I'll gladly take these three. To a Distance isn't the ideal track from Battle Gear 4, but it's still class. Thought about giving Battle the 3 pts.

Really disappointed with the Suikoden selection. Not one of the better tracks from the Celtic Collections. Still don't care about Ork, Jooli or Pathetic Battle. New Quack would probably be my 4th pick. I like it for what it is, even if it isn't close to my top 3.

Jooli's Song - Definitely one of the better selections. The only problem I have with it is the pacing of it, which is a tad too sluggish.

Battle - YES! This track is such an audio cartoon! Reminds me of musical style of old NES capcom games (Rescue Rangers?).

To a distance - This track could be inserted into Top Gun and nobody would know the difference. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing , but it's not a good thing either ;)

pathetic battle arrange "distortion of space" - Sometimes the good ol' bVI-bVII-I progression can be just plain delicious when cooked right, but this one tastes really tired, like the musical equivalent of instant Kraft dinner.

Ork - Awesome. Not for anything in particular, just as a whole. I'm to undertand that this song is spun off of an old Amiga track? If so, I wouldn't mind hearing it if someone doesn't mind posting it.

Emotional Theme - This one was alrite, but I thought the Celtic dance section was kinda pointless.

New Quack City - That opening guitar riff got annoying pretty fast! But the overall funkiness of the track and the echoing horn swells made up for it.

Route 99 - Pretty good track, just not good enough to beat the other 3 picks.

The verdict:
3 pts - Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle
2 pts - Immortal 3 - Ork
1 pts - The Gods Awaken - Jooli's Song

Question: Should SoTW be suspended during first-round BSC voting? It's been done in the past, but I personally will take all the music contests the board is willing to give and more.

Any thoughts?

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Jun 1, 2007 07:09 PM

I was disappointed last year when SotW was suspended. It basically robbed an entire month of activity. The BSC gives 256 tracks, which will take me only a couple afternoons to sift through, having downloaded the torrent and all. Once I've decided what's being kept and what's discarded, I'll be ready for more.

My iPod still has plenty of available space. Gimme.

Golfdish from Hell Jun 1, 2007 07:50 PM

I say keep 'er going. I need all the distraction I can get from my Summer stat class. The more contests I have, the less depressing it is...

Speaking of which, I have to find something to nominate soon...

Chuckster Jun 2, 2007 12:02 AM

Forgoing individual comments. However, a decent grouping, with a trio of songs (Ork, Battle, New Quack City) that I feel don't measure up to the rest. And what I find most surprising is that Pathetic Battle isn't getting more universal love. Oh well.

(3 points) Mahou Shoujou Ai 2 "transformation" Full Arrange Album - pathetic battle arrange "distortion of the space"

(2 points) Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99

(1 point) Battle Gear 4 + Battle Gear 4 Tuned Original Soundtrack - To a distance

Another vote to keep SotW going.

Jerk. I thought of the very same thing while I was out at dinner, and just got back from a movie and was ready to post the question.

Elorin Jun 2, 2007 09:44 AM

My vote would be to delay SotW during BSC. If SotW continues through with the BSC, I'll allot time for it as opposed to BSC. I have a feeling I won't be able to cope with both SotW and BSC at the same time. Especially the first few rounds of BSC.

Here's how I voted for this week's Battle:

(2 points) Battle Gear 4 + Battle Gear 4 Tuned Original Soundtrack - To a distance

(2 points) Mahou Shoujou Ai 2 'transformation' Full Arrange Album - pathetic battle arrange 'distortion of the space'

(2 points) Genso Suikoden Music Collection ~Celtic Collection 2~ - Emotional Theme ~Genso Suikoden~

My evil plan to supplant you in all thing SoTW is well on track...muahahaha :D

Also, what's your position on delaying/not delaying?

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 2, 2007 03:25 PM

I personally don't mind either way, which is why I didn't register an opinion. >_>

Duck King Jun 2, 2007 10:30 PM

I'm also in favor of keeping SotW going, despite me having some time shortage recently. But I wouldn't want to add more delays to SotW in addition to the ones we've had earlier in the year, due to the downtimes and BCC's first round.

ikkei Jun 3, 2007 05:40 AM

I would continue with the contest normally and see if there is a need of extending it another week.

Now the votes:

2 points - Battle Gear 4 + Battle Gear 4 Tuned Original Soundtrack - To a distance
2 points - Mahou Shoujou Ai 2 'transformation' Full Arrange Album - pathetic battle arrange 'distortion of the space'
1 point - Immortal 3 - Ork
1 point - The Gods Awaken - Jooli's Song

isdapi Jun 3, 2007 12:23 PM

For my part, I'd prefer to put SoTW in stand-by for two or three weeks. In a egoist way, it's my point of view, but the next three weeks I will be saturated with exams.

A good resolution would be what ikkei has proposed.
