Any recommendations for a new laptop?
I know this is asked too often, but I'm probably going to be getting a laptop sometime soon, and I really want to get a good one. I'd like it to be pretty fast, so I wouldn't mind a gaming laptop of some sort, but I guess I care more about reliability and utility than anything else. I'm not sure what my price range is at the moment, but is there anything that leaps out to someone?

you know a 700 dollar HP PavilionDv6000 is a pretty good choice, I've been using mine for quite some time now, Games such as LOTR battle on middle earth would run smoothly, but i havent tried the whole oblivion kind of thing.
Its reliable though, and pretty much the interface makes it look awesome, and its also widescreen so <3 |
I've had a MacBookPRO running Windows XP natively on Boot Camp with Steam Source games and "Company of Heroes" for a while... It's been running great. They come with a X1600PRO graphics card which is pretty good IMO. Plus the laptop itself is top notch build quality and support wise.
Not a choice for everyone, but a suggestion w/ experience. |
When I purchased my current laptop, I checked around a lot before buying it, and asked my uncle (who designs systems in Silicon valley) what brand he recommended. He told me that basically every major brand has their laptops manufactured in the same plants in Taiwan, so no matter if you go with HP, Gateway, Dell or Toshiba (who used to make their own, but not anymore), it's basically the same thing. What you pay for is the amount of testing they do after they ship them back over to the US, and the quality of support they offer.
That said, I've had my Dell Inspiron 6000 for two years now, and I haven't had a single problem with it aside from having to switch the battery -- and not because mine was one of the exploding ones, it was just old. That was probably partially my fault as well, for not unplugging it for a whole semester. It cost me $950, and that was completely customized. Just Google "Dell laptop coupon" and you can get all sorts of crazy $600 off discounts. (like this) |
