Are we waiting on something or are there just technical issues?

orion_mk3 May 15, 2007 03:56 PM

We were waiting for this week's tracks to be uploaded to the server. So I guess you could say it was both.

Everything's ready now, though.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 16, 2007 09:49 PM

This was...lackluster. I guess it's par for the course that several excellent weeks have to be followed by a thoroughly underwhelming variety. On the plus side, it was quite easy to pluck the best three tracks out of the crowd. I'll forgo most of the commentary; if your nomination earned points, then I saved it to my hard drive.

3 Points: Rage of the Dragons Original Arrange Album - Cheer Up!
2 Points: pop'n music 10 AC & CS pop'n music 8 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
1 Point: FRONT MISSION ONLINE Original Soundtrack - Arena

"Cheer Up!" is easily the shining star, a welcome oasis of fun and energy in a dry desert. Even if the competition were fiercer, I probably would've given it multiple points just for possessing a very different and refreshing style from what we typically get in SotW. Here's hoping for its success!

Golfdish from Hell May 16, 2007 10:05 PM

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin - Mmm...Fluffy. Not much here, but its' kinda relaxing.

Cheer Up! - Always loved this track, have always loved Toshikazu Tanaka. Party time!

Battle - More than once, I've been tempted to nominate this sucker from the massively underrated Bouken Tai SPC set (no OST was released unfortunately). It just builds and builds and builds and never lets up on the melody and wackiness. My front-runner, unless the remainder of these tracks pulls off something amazing.

Peaceful Romancer - Hmm, it's okay. At no point did I feel it was the next great chiptune, but it's listenable. About par with the usual Touhou stuff.

City - The good stuff. I could almost see myself tolerating a Power Rangers game if the music is this good. For some reason, so many composers have trouble coming up with quality tracks of this style, but this is definitely a good example of "old school" BGM at work. I could listen for hours to that delicious underlying bass accompaniment. I'm impressed.

Wodan - Has massive potential, but meanders between "waiting for something good to happen" to "wall of sound" and is way too disjointed to enjoy.

Ft. Eagle Forest - Forgettable. Wait...(relistens)...Yeah, forgettable.

Arena - Boring loops + droning melody = fail. Nothing I'll ever go out of my way to listen to, but fitting for a militaristic game setting. SOTW isn't a militaristic game though. The point at the loop is pretty dynamic and cool though.

Like Crash, I think there was a wide margin between the good and bad. Determining my top 3 is easy, but determining who gets how many is the hard part. So for the first time, here's my first 2-2-2 distribution.

2 pts - Cheer Up!
2 pts - Battle
2 pts - City

Will nominate something later.

katchum May 18, 2007 07:00 PM

3 points) Atlantic Spotted Dolphin: plenty of variation, both in harmony and instrumentation. I like jazz.

2 points) Wodan: maybe repetitive in a way, but the rhythm expresses a certain force, there is also variation between fast and slow parts, lyrical and strong parts.

1 point) Arena: too much slow strings doing nothing good with the sound quality. Last place, but better than the other songs.

City and peaceful romancer: I hate these chord progressions.
Cheer up: I'm not in the mood for such kind of music, sorry.
Ft. Eagle Forest: I fell asleep.
Battle: too much going on here.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES Game Rip) - City Meh. It's nothing I haven't heard before, and better. This kind of bland stuff all sort of blends together after a while.

"Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon" ~ Coi Vanni Gialli - Wodan As usual, Hamauzu apparently thinks he's writing for the concert hall in Munich rather than a video game. Still, the orchestral textures are nice, even if there is no melody to speak of. Still, I wish he'd buckle down and write one just to remind us that he can.

Contact (Game Rip) - Ft. Eagle Forest A more atmospheric-style track. It sets a mood well, but was a bit too laid back and diffuse for my taste.

FRONT MISSION ONLINE Original Soundtrack - Arena Intriguing electronica-style track. It's got some nice militaristic touches, though it seemed like the tune could really have burst into something better but was holding back. Definitely got better as it went along, though. Also: two loops, please.

Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle Definitely energetic, with a slight swing style to it. Piano's nice, melody's okay--pretty good all around.

Rage of the Dragons Original Arrange Album - Cheer Up! The crowd noises are horrible, but the track is decent salsa once it gets going. Salsa isn't my genre, but the tune's not bad for what it is.

Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer Now that the BCC is all but over, I guess I can stop giving chiptunes a hard time about not being entered. I like the melody here very much, even if it's firmly in "Perfect Cherry Blossom" mode (which seems to happen a lot; must have been a very influential track). Chip nazis won't like it, but oh well.

pop'n music 10 AC & CS pop'n music 8 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin More jazz with some electronics thrown in for good measure. Pretty good.

Not terribly excited about this week. What can I say--jazz and salsa are things I can only stand in small doses.

Duck King May 19, 2007 10:58 PM

Ok week. Chiptunes > everything else.

1st: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES Game Rip) - City
2nd: Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle
3rd: Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer

isdapi May 20, 2007 09:19 AM

Low participation this week and I can see why, I'm not crazy about this week either.

Point Distribution
(2 points) Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer
(2 points) Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon ~ Coi Vanni Gialli - Wodan
(1 point) Contact (Game Rip) - Ft. Eagle Forest
(1 point) pop'n music 10 AC & CS pop'n music 8 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin

Onto the next nomination:
Symphony Gagharv Trilogy <Falcom Sound Team JDK, JDK Electric Symphony Orchestra> - [2] Bonds

Elorin May 20, 2007 10:07 AM

My votes:

(2 points) pop'n music 10 AC ! CS pop'n music 8 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin

(2 points) Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer

(1 point) Contact (DS Game Rip) - Ft. Eagle Forest

(1 point) Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle

Was tempted to give Contact more points but Gokinjo was too infectious to pass up. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was very close to getting a point. I've always preferred "Fight, Chocobo!" to its arrangement, "Wodan" though "Wodan" does have its moments.

Manny Biggz May 20, 2007 10:38 AM

3 obvious winners for me here.

3 points - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES Game Rip) - City
2 points - Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer
1 point - Contact (Game Rip) - Ft. Eagle Forest

ikkei May 20, 2007 11:56 AM

Not a bad week:

1 point ~ "Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon" ~ Coi Vanni Gialli - Wodan

2 points ~ Gokinjo Bouken Tai (Game Rip) - Battle

3 points ~ Touhou Kaikidan ~Mystic Square~ (Game Rip) - Peaceful Romancer

Runner up: Rage of Dragon

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 20, 2007 05:37 PM

Okay, I have a question about eligibility.

Let's say that there's a rather popular NES game, one whose music is fairly known. For argument's sake, let's use Kirby's Adventure.

Now let's say there was an unused track in Kirby's Adventure. You could play though the game 1,000 times and never hear it once.

Furthermore, let's say there was an official arranged album for Kirby's Adventure that contained an arrangement of the unused track.

Now, after all that, would the obscurity requirements be met? Yes, the source material is well-recognized, but the track wouldn't be immediately recognized, and even less so here for being an arrangement. Surely that would be obscure enough, right?

Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Opinions?

TCK May 20, 2007 06:15 PM

For me, it would entirely depend on if the unused track in question is common knowledge or not, and if the original track (or the arrangement) referenced any other track from the same game. I can't think of any actual track that fits your description though.

Having said all that I was thinking about nominating an unused track from F-Zero Maximum Velocity a while back. Perhaps the eligibilty of unused tracks should be a topic to discuss.

And I think I'll vote later.

Additional Spam:
As I promised.

Wodan - A little lacking, but okay I guess. Pretty average.

Arena - It could have been a lot better if it were given time to develop, but instead it just ended. Meh.

Battle - Pretty funky, and definitely something different. A bit lo-fi, but I'm not gonna complain.

Ft. Eagle Forest - From the first ten seconds I thought I was going to like this. I do, and I can appreciate what it's doing, but nonetheless it's still a bit lacking in substance.

City - Pretty sweet, albeit repetitive. Thought they'd be more to it, which is a shame.

Cheer Up - Ole! It's okay, and gets me going, but I can't help but feel it's a bit uninspiring. Then again most music like this sounds the same to me :(

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin - Underwhelming, but not bad. Pleasant enough to listen to, but like Cheer Up it isn't really my thing.

Peaceful Romancer - Deceptively it's actually a staff roll theme, not shmup music. That's neither here nor there, as most tracks ZUN makes are similar. It takes a little while to get going, but I love the main melody.

Nothing terrible, but all in all average.

3 points
Peaceful Romancer

2 points
Ft. Eagle Forest

1 point
Battle

Was tempted to give Arena a point, but not enough to take points away from any of those I gave points to.

Drakken May 20, 2007 09:39 PM

Will edit with point distribution in a bit.

I've been toying with the same idea, though I think that the track I've got in mind, which is from the PSF2 set from FFX, has too much of a stigma attached to it; nevermind that the song can never be heard in the game, is on no OST, and doesn't share any themes or instrumentation with the rest of the score. C'est la vie, I suppose.

Up until the point you mentioned that the track had been arranged and placed on an official OST I was ready to say that it would be fine by me. I'm not so sure now, though--I suppose it would depend of the series, and how much that arranged album's made the rounds.

Drakken May 20, 2007 11:03 PM

If there are unused songs from popular games that are not featured on officially released albums (and not known about because of game rips), I'm OK with that. If they can be found on an officially released arranged album or a game rip, it depends on how widely that album/rip is known.

Tentative point distribution (I'd still like to listen to the songs more, but just in case CHz decides to close voting):

3 pts. - Ft. Eagle Forest
1 pt. - Cheer Up!
1 pt. - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
1 pt. - City

THE POWER OF WATER May 21, 2007 02:00 AM

Golfdish from Hell May 21, 2007 02:18 AM

Whew...I'm happy. I'm also sad, because like I said, I meant to nominate that at least 3 times in the past. And wow, I thought Cheer Up! was doing better than just 10 pts.

I'm not at all opposed to totally (and I mean, totally) unknown tracks from known series. Not overlooked tracks from known series, not sleeper hits from known series, but totally unknown ones, I have no problems with.

Dr. Uzuki May 21, 2007 03:41 AM

Estatic that Gokinjo Bouken Tai squeeked out the gold, it was by far the most enjoyable for me this week, and I even had a track of my own included! It was a disposable nom anyhow, glad some people threw it points here and there.

TCK May 21, 2007 06:44 AM

Holy shit I came first sort of almost :(

Surprised my track did as well as it did, but I'm happy it lost to Battle. In fact I think the results were pretty much perfect.
