Geforce 6800GT booting
So I've just installed, or tried to install the Geforce 6800Gt into my computer. Trouble is that the computer won't actually boot up, well the Hard drives won't boot anyway. Everything switches on - CD Drive, fans, processor etc. Just not the Hard Drives.
I had the computer working a couple of times but each time it just restarted or switched off. So when I switched back to my old GFX everything works fine. I'm running a Abit NF7 mobo, 3 HDDs (1 Sata, 2 normal) and 1gb Ram. Could it be that the GFX isn't getting enough power through the cables? |
Seems like a possible cause if you're running with less than a 350W PSU. Do you get any video signal at all, any indication that it posts? Try booting your computer leaving only the drive with your OS plugged in and see if it makes a difference.

That must be the problem them. I've only got 300w of power, looks like a new power supply is needed then.
|
And just for safety's sake, aim for something around the 400-450W range, this way you don't run the chance of repeating this mistake or plan on upgrading your hardware in the future.
|
Well that's not the problem. I've just put in a 550W power supply in and still the same problem, however this time a nasty sounding pop/bang came from somewhere inside my PC on boot up.
However, I put back in my old graphics card and all is good again. |
Hrm, nasty popping sounds don't bode well for computers. Does anything in there look like it's been burned or fried? If it's running alright, scrutinize that new video card for any faults, since I can't imagine any computer running well after a loud bang from the inside.
|
With a bang like that you'd thing there would be a problem wouldn't you? I can find no marks of any kind and my PC is running as fine as ever. GFX fault then? Dang.
