Ever thought about changing your name?

Browsing deviantArt, I found someone who complimented an artist on how well his name was phonetically spoken, and how he had presented it into his logo. There are a wide variety of names out there, and I'm sure that everyone has a kind of mental image they have when they first here a name spoken. Some people have boring names, or just names they hate.

Do you like your name? If you wanted to, what would you change it to?

Steven Wolfer. I prefer "Steven" because all the other "Steve"s I see, on TV or in real life, are jackasses. :tpg: My last name does bother me a because Wolfer is German and I don't have an ounce of German in me. My grandfather married my grandmother after she had already given birth to my dad, and his name was passed on instead. I've thought about simply shortening my last name to "Wolf" because it's just sounds better to say "wulf" than "wOHlfer".

My mom has always bugged me as a kid that she should have named me "Vincenzo" instead because I look 100% Italian. :tpg: (I'm actually 25% ;P)

When I was younger, I came up with different names as a substitute to my current name. I always thought my name sounded "old" for my generation. Thankfully, I realized that it's not in the name, it's in how you are recognized by the people around you. Heck, my friends call me by a different name and some don't even know my real name.

I like my name (first=Nathan middle=Blake), and wouldn't change it. Nobody has trouble pronouncing it, although non-english speakers like to spell it "Nathen" or "Nathon" for some reason. Of course, I've gotten used to people shortening it to Nate without asking me, but it doesn't bother me too much.

I like my middle name better, because it's less common, but I've never had much success getting people to call me Blake. I tried once in high school, but everyone was too familiar with my first name, so it didn't work out.

My name is CiarĂ¡n, which is pronounced "kee-RAWN". Most Irish people have the hang of it but English pronounce it "key-RAN" or "keern", the Americans call me "see-A-ran". I've heard so many distortions over 30 years now I think that I'd better off being "Bob". :)

Since my last name begins with the letter Z and I've only got it through my mothers marriage I've thought about changing it a lot; especially when I consider all the times it's resulted it me waiting around because things are sorted by alphabetical order. The only reason I don't do it is because of the hassle involved.

I always used to hate my name because I thought it sounded rather pompous. I went through phases where I would think of changing it to something like Kerri or Pandora (apparently both suit me), mostly when I was having teenage spur of the moment identity crisises, but now I don't mind. The name has its charm I guess.

I have thought about changing my name a few times. It is a bit of a mouth full, in total first and second name have 6 syllables between them. I would much rather prefer something shorter. My name is quite rare in the area that I live in, so I guess I like being the only one with my name.

I have a vehement dislike for my surname. Lamb. It's not the name itself that bugs me; it's the association (my father's reputation is quite horrible. And, suffice to say, I am not his greatest fan).

My mother's maiden name (Forrest) would ring much more nicely with my first name - What's more is that she refuses to change it back even post-divorce and I fully plan to alter my own. Her choice is a source of a heap of spite on his behalf, so I can't imagine what kind of shit I'd stir up if I changed my own name.

Rockgamer Mar 25, 2007 02:11 PM

I wouldn't change my name. When I was younger, I tended not to like my name that much, especially since no one else had my name (which is Devin, by the way), but now I've come to like it because no one else has it. I've still never met another person in real life with my name (I've met a few Devons, but no Devins), though through the magic of the internet I have met another one ('sup Tritoch).

I like my name as is and have never thought about changing it. The only problem I have with my name is people misspelling it with the girl's version at an oddly frequent level (Jesse misspelled as Jessie). It doesn't look hard to pronounce, and I can't imagine how someone could screw it up.

Paco Mar 25, 2007 03:42 PM

I don't think I could ever change my name, mainly because I'm so used to "Juan". However, most of my friends call me "Paco". It's a nickname I got pegged with in high school and, in typical Mexican fashion, I never got rid of that name.

It should be noted, however, that when I was like 10 years old I wanted the name "Michael" for some reason. To this day I have tried to rationalize why that was but the bottom line is I still don't know why that was an adamant wish of mine. :/

I have one friend who had his name legally changed to Rock F.N. Awesome. I'd never be able to think of a name as great as that one, so I don't know if I'd be satisfied with a name change. And as far as more normal names go, I'm happy with the name Dan.

scotty Mar 25, 2007 04:23 PM

I've wanted to change my name ever since Eurotrip came out. Fuck that song, and those people who never tire at pissing me off. SCOTTY DOESN'T KNOW/ GROW :(

Rydia Mar 25, 2007 04:29 PM

I've never thought of changing my full name at all, and I don't think I could do it in general. My last name is unique and I also think my initials are a little interesting when the middle one is included.

First
Middle
Last

Paul James Spencer Dolphin-Rowland.

What do you think :(

Whenever I go someplace new, meet new people, start a new job or something, I always get asked about it, where it comes from etc. And I always say the same thing: Absolutely no idea =o

I usually just shorten it to Rowland.

Paco Mar 25, 2007 04:56 PM

Dude... Dolphin-Rowland is fucking ACE~

It's better than that "Verduzco" thing I have attached to MY name. :tpg:

I, too, am Jesse. I've never really wanted to change my name, but when I was younger I thought it would be the coolest thing in the world to be called AJ, or JT, or TJ or any other 2 letter abreviation. The only thing that bothers me is sometimes in school a teacher will read my name as 'Jessica' off the attendance list.. I'm not sure why, since it doesn't say Jessica, but they still seem to do it quite often.

Sometimes those attendance lists only go up to a ceratin amount of letters, so if all they see is 'Jess' on there, they'll probably assume the name is Jessica since it's probably more common than Jesse. That's the most reasonable explanation I can come up with, anyway.

Either that or the teacher is going by somebody else's misspelling of Jessie and lengthening the name to Jessica out of his or her own volition.

I've never wanted to change my first name, which is Shane, in all the years I've been around. Well, at least not in all of those years I remember. My middle name, Michael, can take a flying leap and I've contemplated changing it more times than I can remember.

The one thing that does irk me is how frequently people fuck up my first name. Most common is "Sean," big fucking surprise there. I've seen and heard some real doozies, though. Gene is among them, Lane is as well. In fact, one of the places I go for lunch sometimes (Panera Bread) takes your first name when you order. They've fucked it up 3 times in 3 different ways. "Shene," "Shein," and "Shayne." I just tell them my name is Bob now. You have to be a very special kind of stupid to fuck up "Bob."

Dekoa Mar 25, 2007 08:28 PM

I've thought about changing my name multiple times. However, I've always come back to the same reason. My name defines who I am, that and my name is unique enough that people don't come across it every day. In fact, many people associate my real name with another name that isn't mine (My name is Curt and people always link it to Curtis).

CelticWhisper Mar 25, 2007 08:36 PM

Just try not to be too curt with them when they mess it up.

(Sorry, sorry, couldn't resist.)

Acacia Mar 25, 2007 11:32 PM

I like how the majority of the people who posted here don't mention what his or her name IS.

I was gonna follow the same route but now I think it's kinda annoying =/

In any case, my first name is Misun, and, for the first 16 or so years of my life, I wanted to change it into something else. It's so irritating when people mispronouce your name (and CONTINUE to mispronouce your name). Plus, I think it looks kinda dumb looking.

Still, I can't imagine myself with another name, strange as that it; guess it just...grew on me, I suppose.
