No Commonwealth Games thread?

I know this will be meaningless to a lot of members here but the Commonwealth Games started yesterday.

The Commonwealth Games, for those who don't know, brings together all the nations of the British Commonwealth (Pretty much all the countries of the old Empire except the US) for 11 days of track and field events. Seen by some as a poor man's Olympics, I personally love the commonwealth games as it gives a chance for some lesser known athletes from some lesser known countries to compete on an international stage.

Also, there's a lot of old rivalries in the Commonwealth.

The rugby sevens is on at the moment, 14-7 to England against Australia. I imagine all the Aussie members here already know the result, living in the future as they do.

So far, the Scottish swimmers have done unexpectedly well, everyone expects the Aussies to dominate the swimming events.

Hang on, 14-12. Good game.

The opening ceremony was pretty cool I thought, the fireworks were certainly spectacular.

So is anyone else watching the games or is it just me?

So holy shit it's started already? Ah..

I should probably tune in and support the Malaysian athletes.

What the fuck?

When England win a gold medal they play Land of Hope and Glory, not God Save the Queen. I know England, Scotland and Wales all compete separatly and they have their own national anthems but the English national anthem and the British one are the same thing. If I was an English athlete I'd possibly be a little upset they weren't playing the anthem.

Oh shit, I didn't realise it started so early. I'll be definatly keeping tabs on it. Considering we're hosting it this year.

C'mon aussie c'mon!

Medal Tally - Top 5 Countries

Australia
Gold - 84
Silver - 69
Bronze - 68
Total - 221

England
Gold - 36
Silver - 40
Bronze - 34
Total - 110

Canada
Gold - 26
Silver - 29
Bronze - 31
Total - 86

India
Gold - 22
Silver - 17
Bronze - 11
Total - 50

South Africa
Gold - 12
Silver - 13
Bronze - 13
Total - 38

So it's all over. Pretty much a domination by Australia, and we ended up getting more gold than at Manchester in 2002 (82).

One thing I must say is both the opening and closing ceremonies sucked, hard. The only redeeming feature was the fireworks, they were pretty ace.

The only good thing about the opening ceremony was when Ron Barrassi walked on water. I'd always suspected.

Geez channel nine did a horrible job with the broadcast, especially considering they have a commentater as talented as Darrel Eastlake. He should've commentated all the events. It wold've been HUGE!
