Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game (TURTLE POWER!)

Okay, confession time. I was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kid. Through and through. I'm 26 now so it fell RIGHT into my adolescence. Sure, I watched Transformers when I was tiny, and GI Joe. Sure, I watched some Voltron and Hercules. But the Turtles were mine. All mine. And Raphael was my favorite.

I had the toys. I saw the movies. I even ate the cereal.

And sure enough, the local arcade in our mall had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles four-player arcade machine. THE game. And because the Turtles were so popular, this machine was constantly full of people, especially on the Saturdays I would spend there while my mom shopped. So it was this great community atmosphere, as people would run out of tokens and drop out, with someone always happy to take their place. It was like a ride that you just jumped into at any time. I remember seeing the game in different chunks from different parts. Sometimes I'd catch in at the beginning, sometimes I'd jump in to help fight Krang. But it was always a blast. Especially for us Turtle fans.

And a few months ago, it hit me as I pondered XBLA games: What would be the best old arcade game they could put on XBLA? I swam through my memories of Aliens vs. Predator, Afterburner, Primal Rage, and The Simpsons. And then I realized how cool it would be to have that old nostalgic experience from years and years ago. To just jump in with three other strangers and take down Shredder together.

This Wednesday, that dream comes true. In a remarkable turn around of announcement to release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game comes to Xbox Live! Arcade. Four-player co-op, offline OR online. With voice chat even. For a pittance of 400 points. Video here if you want to see it in action.

Turtles fight with honor. It's cowabunga time. Who's with me?

I hope they managed to keep all the original songs and voices.. I remember one of the PS2 TMNT games had the original arcade game featured in it, but they had to change a few things because of licencing issues.

Yeah, I remember that little problem when it was featured on Battle Nexus. It felt like a waste of time unlocking it just to find it missing the original music and voices. Only good that came outta playing this game on BN was unlimited coin insertion. If they took that outta the XLA version coming tomorrow, I'm gonna be pissed.

EDIT: Well, it's infinite coin insertion all right, but not the way I thought it would be. You get to swap turtles each time you die, which is okay, I guess. Probably why there's no coin insert button so I could have 99 lives with Leo.

"Availability: Not available in Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore or Taiwan"

Oh great, it's not even available for Aussies.. Oh well, sucks to be me.

This game just made me realize how horrible the 360 controller buttons are.

Woof. So far I've had tons of problems with this game.

1. Whenever I try to connect to an online game, 9 out of 10 times, I get booted back because "The Host left the game."
2. The three times we've actually gotten a game going, it has froze up and quit twice on the second level and once on the fourth level (for those counting at home, that means it's booted us every time I've played).
3. When it experiences trouble and boots you back, you have to start the whole game over again.
4. There doesn't appear to be a way to join a game already in progress, only from the beginning. *cries*

I'm starting to worry this was rushed. Contemplate the fact that most games are announced for XBLA months before we actually get them and are up on partnernet for at least a month before release. This game materialized out of nowhere two weeks ago and is already out.

I'm hoping to complete a game online later, but right now, ironically, I'm stopping to eat pizza.

They probably set up the whole Create-A-Party-Before-You-Play thing so no one jumped in at Krang or Shredder and took the instant achievement for beating the game in co-op and living to tell. It's not a big deal to me, just means I have to do better so I die less.

Because I tend to get the most kills, but I die faster.

I haven't experienced booting like that, yet. I get pretty lucky getting into a match, not every time, but more than half the time. I've only had one or two instances in the last game I played earlier where it would "buffer" as I call it, because it would stop, then resume at the same point, but I think it's just cuz of the connection latency between me and the other players, which is actually pretty good.

Only thing I don't like about this game is only having 20 lives on Xbox Live. C'mon Konami, this game was fucking HARD back in the day, sometimes still is even now, if you don't time everything right.

Yeah, I finally went the distance with a group and ran out of lives first, somewhere in the Technodrome. Watched a guy playing Raphael and he had to absolutely choose his swings and be VERY careful to beat Krang. Then got his ass handed to him by the dual Shredders. And then it boots you back to the lobby very unceremoniously.

I don't know where else to ask this, but it has to do with TMNT. Anyway, when I was a kid (sometime near 1992 I think), they aired what I assumed was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie.. It was the story all the way from when the turtles first mutated all the way until they defeat Krang and the Shredder too.. I tried looking on wikipedia but couldn't find any reference to it. Does anyone know anything about it or was this some super cut and paste job that Australians did of the entire 1980's tv series?

I have clips from it too

EDIT - Ok, I had a look around more and have found scenes from Season 4 that are also from this 'movie' I have.. I'm impressed that they actually went through all the seasons and put together a movie length ep..

Man, I am finding even the Single Player version with infinite lives hard. Oh well, anyone up for some CO-OP? :D

SimDaddyGT Mar 29, 2007 08:35 AM

I can try to hit up CO-OP tonight, depending on what I'm doing, which, since it's Thursday, should be nothing. I still haven't moved out yet, so I still have some online time.
