Police found the 49-year-old comedian alive but gravely injured in a West Hollywood home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Eisenman said the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face."

Jeni died at a nearby hospital.

Eisenman said suicide had not been officially confirmed and the investigation was continuing. An autopsy on Jeni would be done Monday, said Lt. Fred Corral from the investigation division of the coroner's office.

Jeni regularly toured the country with a standup act and had starred in several HBO comedy specials, most recently "A Big Steaming Pile of Me" during the 2005-06 season.

Another HBO special, "Platypus Man," won a Cable ACE award for best standup comedy special, and formed the basis for his UPN sitcom of the same name, which ran for one season.

Jeni's movie credits included "The Mask," in which he played Jim Carrey's best friend, "The Aristocrats," "National Lampoon's Dad's Week Off," and "An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn."

He had guest appearances in the TV shows "Everybody Hates Chris," "Married: With Children," and updated versions of the game shows "Hollywood Squares" and "Match Game."

Frazer Smith, standup comedian who often opened for Jeni and the emcee at the Ice House, where Jeni often performed, said young comedians looked up to him.

"He was probably one of the best standup comedians in the last 50 years," said Smith. "He had tons and tons of material. He was looked up to by all the young comedians, a total pro."

The Brooklyn-born comic first received national attention in 1990 with the Showtime special "Richard Jeni: Boy From New York City." Two years later, his "Crazy From the Heat" special attracted the highest ratings in Showtime's history.

Jeni became a frequent guest on "The Tonight Show" during Johnny Carson's reign and continued to appear after Jay Leno took over as host.

He also wrote comic material for the 2005 Academy Awards, which was hosted by his friend Chris Rock.

Thats the second of Jim Carrey's co stars to commit suicide. The first was in "Dumb and Dumber" the one that wanted his money but the guys gave him IOU's.

If he had his own sitcom, the highest rated Showtime comedy special ever, and won several Ace awards, you probably could've simply said "Richard Jeni has died" without confusing many people.

It's obvious that he was a lot more than just "that guy who co-starred with Jim Carrey in that one film."

This is a very sad day in comedy. I still consider his Greatest Bits standup concert to be one of the funniest acts ever recorded. Period... :(

Richard Jeni was so much more than the guy in the fucking Mask. The man was a comic talent, and it's too bad he took his own life. Relationship poker was a fantastic bit.

My personal favorite of his was always the Cryptic Sex Talk of the Old South. :tpg:

But for me, it's the first thing I ever saw him do, and the back and forth of: "I can't have an orgasm unless I'm on top." and "I can't have an orgasm unless I'm on crack!" gets me every time. "I want to be able to see other people." "I have multiple personalities, I AM OTHER PEOPLE!"

It is so unfortunate that Richard Jeni has passed away. It seems like comedians that bring such a unique sense of style to their comedy always pass away early. Its kind of like a curse because mitch hedburg being on of my favourite comedians of all time, passed away and now richard jeni which had some of my favourite comedic moments of all time. I would like to share with you some of them but one of them has already been mentioned which is the emotional card game. I have listened it to so much I would like to think I have it remembered.

Despite the name of the thread, I entered expecting to see word of the death of Eric Stoltz.

Seems as though he had a few mental illnessess that provoked his suicide, according to his family.

He was suffering from deep depression, and some kind of paranoia.

I'm pretty sad about this, the above have mentioned a lot of my favorite comedy skits from him and all around he seemed like a great guy, shame that not a lot of people may know what he was capable of. Jay Leno even said that he wished he had material that Richard had. Don't know if that helps in how good he was as a comedian, but I figured I'd share it anyway.

Wow, this is crap. I saw his HBO Special, 'A Big Steaming Pile of Me", and it was hilarious. I'm shocked he's gone, I don't know why he would wanna kill himself, since many people loved/liked him. Meh..sucks..
