Statistics say you'll probably die from hiccups

Ok, so I have no idea whether the title is true or not, but I sure as hell know that I have hiccups right now. So what's your miracle solution for hiccups? If it's any help, I've been drinking for the last 4 hours or so, so that's the particular kind of hiccups I'm trying to get rid of. How the fuck to you get rid of it so you can peacefully kill your braincells, hoping it'll give you an excuse for failling the honours physics program at your university when your parents ask you?

Drink water while holding your nose. Take long gulps without letting air in for at least 5~8 seconds. Usually stops it for me.

Jiraiya Mar 11, 2007 02:24 AM

I just usually stop talking, hold my breath and think about something other than hiccups. Pick a letter, and just think of things that start with that letter, I dunno it usually works for me!

Drink water (upside-down) while riding a unicycle in Youngstown, Ohio's McDonald's parking lot.

It seems... overly complicated. I think I'll just wait instead.

Hey, it may be complicated, but I'll be damned if someone can prove it doesn't work.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 11, 2007 02:38 AM

I rarely get the hiccups, but when I do, if I hold my breath and just focus on something else (like others have mentioned), it goes away after 3 or 4 hiccups.

Water has never helped me, though. ;_;

Hold your breath and swallow three times.

Drink water from the opposite rim of the glass.

Muzza Mar 11, 2007 03:10 AM

I'm going to go with the populace and say something to do with water should do the trick. Specifically, the cliche holding of the nose and the simultaneous drinking of water. I'd say I get the hiccups about once every two months; I don't know the standard so I can't determine if that's frequent or not.

Well, the flight might be a hassle, but it should be well worth it the next time I get the hiccups. *writes down in notebook*

Drinking water usually helps me a lot. I remember trying to hold my breath when I was younger, but that seemed to make things worse. I've heard a lot of other methods to cure the hiccups, but water has always worked for me.

The Plane Is A Tiger Mar 11, 2007 06:56 AM

Drinking water while I have the hiccups usually just results in either spewing a bit of water or choking. Holding my breath has never been any more successful. I typically just let them go and try to ignore it while focusing on something else. As long as I'm not out in public the sounds can be rather amusing.

This has worked for me every single time since I was a child, but you have to wait until you've had them for about three minutes first.

And what is this about dying from hiccups? I've never heard of such a thing.

Radez Mar 11, 2007 09:14 AM

I always just drank a full glass of water, one of those tall glasses, in one breath. Gulping water seemed to help. I always thought it was because there were pockets of air someplace there shouldn't be, and consuming a bunch of water without allowing any more air into your mouth helps to settle things.

A lot of times when I drink soda I start to hiccup. It normally doesn't do much for me, but I try to hold my breath. Most times I'll end up hiccuping while holding my breath.

Temari Mar 11, 2007 01:23 PM

I'm gonna have to go with what everyone else says and say drinking something usually helps. I havent had a case of hiccups last more then 3 or 4 since I was really young though. Not sure what that means.

This reminds me of a story I read about a girl who had a case of the hiccups for like, 3 months before they went away. I wonder all the shit she must have tried to make them go away. Can't remember where I read it though.

Put some water in a glass, cover the glass with a paper towel and drink the water upside-down (bending over and craning your neck'll work just as well) through the paper towel.

Never fails.

I was told putting sugar on your tongue gets rid of hiccups, but I always thought that was complete bs.

I was driving in my car and got hiccups, and decided to try "faking" it. I stuck out my tongue, pretended to sprinkle sugar on it, brought my tongue back in my mouth and swallowed. Hiccups stopped.

Hydra Mar 11, 2007 01:52 PM

That could end badly SouthJag ... unless you have Brawny(tm).

munchkin13 Mar 11, 2007 01:59 PM

I hold my breath and stretch upwards, works everytime for me. You might hiccup once or twice while doing it, but the stretching is suppose to stop irritating your diaphragm. I used to know specifics, but no longer lol.

Sadly drinking water has never worked on me, which makes me sad.

For me, it was salt and pepper. Don't know why it worked -- it just did.

I haven't had hiccups in a long time, though. :D

Temari Mar 12, 2007 01:10 AM

Ah yes, and I just remembered my sister's way of doing it. Apparently, every time someone in her group of friends has the hiccups, they think of Darth Vader. I'll admit, the first time she said "Darth Vader!" while I had the hiccups, they did go away... does that go under 'scaring the hiccups out of you'?

Spike Mar 12, 2007 01:21 AM

Holding my breath seems to work for me the best. Either that or it's because that's the first thing I try. I used to do the drinking thing, but most of the time, I don't have anything to drink close to me.

guyinrubbersuit Mar 12, 2007 08:04 PM

Just wait it out. None of those techniques work.

JammerLea Mar 12, 2007 10:15 PM

I sometimes try holding my breath for a certain amount of time, but usually I try to ignore them.

Ahh, another technique I discussed with a friend was to try and relax, taking long deep breaths. That usually works for me when I remember to do it.

Too bad there isn't a surefire cure for hiccups.
