Does RPG ryhme with Wii!?!?

Okay is just me or am I the only one that notices that besides zelda the Wii really doesnt have any good RPG titles comming out. Neither do most of the new systems that are out. They need to make more. Does anyone know of any good ones comming out for Wii? or any system for that matter?

Infy Mar 9, 2007 05:32 PM

none of these have come out yet:

Fire Emblem for Wii
White Knight Story for PS3
Final Fantasy XIII and Vs XIII for PS3

and as for 360, i'm still looking at the details for Mass Effect.

Forsety Mar 9, 2007 11:20 PM

Dragon Quest TMQatToM (...long ass title -- Wii)
Enchanted Arms (360+PS3)
Final Fantasy XIII (+VS) (PS3)
Fire Emblem Goddess of Dawn (Wii)
Makai Wars (PS3)
Mass Effect (360)
Monster Kingdom (PS3)
Oblivion (360+PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei (PS3)
Shirokishi Monogatari (PS3)
Super Paper Mario (Wii)

All I can think of off the top of my head unless you want a list of DS and PSP RPGs too.

The Plane Is A Tiger Mar 11, 2007 07:28 AM

Forsety posted a pretty good list there. Most of the RPGs I'm eager for are on the DS or still on the PS2, but I can think of a few other upcoming titles on the newer consoles.

- Fable 2 (360)
- Blue Dragon (360) - Out, but not localized yet
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers (Wii)
- Sword of Legendia (Wii)

I haven't heard anything about Sword of Legendia since Namco-Bandai announced it, but it's possible that there's a connection to Tales of Legendia.

Don't forget about Lost Odyssey for the 360. It's supposed to have a simultaneous worldwide release or something like that.

There's also Eternal Sonata (or Trusty Bell) for the 360. That's all I can remember for next gen stuff.

I don't really see the Wii as an RPG console. That's not to say that it won't be able to do good, even great RPGs. They will hardly cater to the console's strengths though.

Also: How is Zelda an RPG?

As far as I recall Zelda doesn't include enough RPG element to be considered a RPG. The only stat that is modified during the game is the life bar. WHICH is not exclusive to the RPG genre. And that's just one point among plenty others.

I'm buying a 360 once Eternal Sonata hits North America. And ... that's about it. RPG future is so empty ;_;

Well Zelda may not seem to have alot of features that would consider it to be an RPG I agree with you there. But on the other hand it does have very similar laws to every RPG. You walk around towns and talk to people, buy items and improve your inventory and armor. And it all obviousness think about it. What does RPG stand for? Role Playing Game...You are playing the Role of Link.

But then again when you think about it, thats pretty much every game, and any game ever made. Your always playing the role of someone.

Render Mar 13, 2007 12:05 AM

Zelda has always been categorized as an Action RPG.

I also find it amusing that none of the PS3/360 titles will ever make it to the Wii because it's terrible hardware specs.

Maestro Mar 16, 2007 12:53 AM

Well you do "play" the "role" of Link in the "game", but then most/all games would be called an RPG. So, traditionally, Zelda is NOT an RPG.

I REALLY want to play that new Paper Mario game coming out. Has anyone found any good reviews with screenshots and maybe a video or two? If so, please post a link.

Over a year since the Wii's come out and I don't see the RPGs lining up to hop on the platform. Also, Paper Mario is much less of an RPG than Zelda on Wii - I've played both. (Paper Mario for Wii doesn't even belong in this forum I would argue - it's more 2d side-scroller with a helping of extra story.) I consider the Fire Emblem series "strategy," not RPG, and the Dragon Quest game may be more action-oriented than Zelda even. It's not looking great for other consoles either, but 360 seems to have the most thus far which is odd considering it's an American console. I suppose we just have to wait for the PS3 to catch up, but the Wii's momentum in Japan is slowing that down. Oddly, for current-gen hardware the PSP has seen the most valid RPG (and strategy/RPG) releases in recent memory unless you want to count PS2. Crisis Core is going to be a system seller this spring.

There is also Opoona coming for the Wii.

Why the hell did you revive this topic?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jan 7, 2008 02:16 PM

Fire Emblem is a Strategy-RPG no matter what you think of it, speculative. There are fewer games in the genre that are more of an RPG than it.

In any case, it was said ages ago that the Wii is not really being marketed to the RPG crowd, which in itself is a pretty hardcore group. Nintendo's promising to step up and meet the hardcore gamer's expectations, but we'll see if they make good on it.

As for hardware, the DS has seen a large amount of RPGs. Basically, for the next year or two, RPG aficionados should be making handhelds their priority.

Cetra Jan 7, 2008 05:21 PM

There has traditionally been an RPG dry spell at the start of every new generation because RPGs tend to rely on a established user base rather than be a console seller so they typically aren't released near launch. Final Fantasy (and Dragon Quest in Japan) are pretty much the only exceptions here. RPGs also have the longest development cycle because they deal with 30+ hours of content over 5-10 hours of content of other genres.

Personally I think Final Fantasy XIII is going to establish the PS3 as the go-to console for RPGs. I think a lot of RPG players haven't even bought a next gen console and FF13 will most likely prompt them to do so establishing a concentrated demographic. The Xbox 360 is trying hard but at this point I don't think there is anything that can be done to improve RPG sells on the Xbox 360. As for the Wii, it's a complicated situation. 3rd party software isn't doing too well and developers just don't seem confident in putting a major, large budget title on the machine right now.
