Media Remote For PC?
Is there a remote that connects via USB that I can use to change songs or lower / raise volume in programs like Winamp, WMP, and iTunes? Kind of like the one that comes with a mac? I can not seem to find one.

There are a few of varying robustness and price point.
The one I use with my media center system (a Power Mac G4, so this remote is cross-platform) is the ATI Remote Wonder. Fully customizable, and even has a mouse-tracking pad that functions kinda like a hat switch on a joystick. "Roll" it in the direction you want the cursor to go. There are also a couple of remotes on ThinkGeek, a SnapStream and a StreamZap, I think. If you wanted a slight deviation from the norm that is functional (albeit not as grandma-friendly as the ATI or other "traditional" style remotes) and will garner you some Wow-factor, try the Gyration wireless mouse and keyboard combo. The mouse has a motion sensor similar to the Wii controller, and waving it around will move the cursor in the direction you move your arm. Very cool, but it'll set you back a slightly less cool $80. As far as I know, it's a bundle so you don't have the option of just the mouse or just the keyboard. I use this in conjunction with my ATI remote and the setup is quite nice. The only downside to the Gyration unit is the mouse's battery life leaves a teeny bit to be desired, but I'm willing to forgive that on the grounds that it has more work to do than most traditional wireless mice or remotes. It still lasts a good few days between charges, and if it's for a media center, you're probably not going to be actively using the mouse that much anyway. I'll try to dig up links to any or all of these. I'm on an extended break from studying and really should get back to my work for now, but if you need any help tracking them down, let me know. Oh, one more thought on batteries. The ATI remote shipped with some pretty crappy ones, as it gave out a couple months after I got it and I had to put decent batteries in it (I think a couple of Duracells or Rayovacs). I hate those damn cheapo Made-In-Taiwan-to-last-2-minutes things that everything ships with so it can say "batteries included." Fuuuuuuck. Still, the remote itself works great. *sigh* Okay, study time. |
