More evidence Hollywood's running low on ideas?

Those cavemen ads were funny for me for about 10 seconds, then it got old pretty quick. Do you think it'll last long? Or is this a bomb waiting to be dropped?

While we're on this topic, do you know of any tv shows or movies that were created that started out as commercials? I think there were a few, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Anyway, just wondering how good of an idea you think this is. There's probably a reason why stuff like this should stick to commercials, which most people probably don't watch anyway.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, and the cavemen become the latest fad. But chances are it won't.

My God...just wow. I'm at a loss for words here. I can understand basing something off a book, other TV show, movie, etc. but to go off a advertisement? That just makes me wonder where the Vagisil and ED medicine pilots are now. Now I'm curious, will anyone actually watch the show?

seferia Mar 3, 2007 09:47 AM

Oy vey... And here I was thinking that the joke had been stretched out for too long within the context of the commercials themselves. Sure, it was funny the first time around, but now it's just becoming redundant. I can't imagine watching an entire 30 minute episode based on the same idea. At least this isn't a movie, but then again, a movie would only be under two hours tops. Meanwhile, a series' span can go on for hours if you put the episodes back to back. Either way, this is just plain pathetic.

Well, it's being done by ABC, so we don't even have to know or see anything about it to know it will be absolute shit and flop very quickly.

Wojo Mar 3, 2007 11:08 AM

Those cavemen ads are some of the worst commercials I've ever seen. I cannot tell you how many times they repeat those pieces of shit on FSN Pittsburgh during Penguins games.

And now they are going to have a show? Fuck that.

Gechmir Mar 3, 2007 11:13 AM

Sorry, man, but this isn't limited Hollywood. This is the entertainment sector ENTIRELY

Ugh. Is it too much to hope for things to get better? I figure things can't get worse...

"Watch out everyone, arriving this fall straight from the jungle, Its "GEICO!" the half-hour adventures of the loveable gecko everyone knows and loves.
See him defy villains, save the damsel-in-destress, and teach the important lesson on saving car insurance. You'd be financially careless to miss it!
Stating September 15th on PBS."

Yeah, I am agape that not only that caveman idea was pitched, but greenlit.
If hollywood needs ideas, they should start holding an American Idol type contest for the next big screenplay or something,
because that's the only way I see fresh material being brought in.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Mar 3, 2007 11:43 AM

This is probably the worst sitcom idea since ABC's tragically ludicrous disaster, Hi Honey, I'm Home.

"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.
Am I the only one who actually find the location kinda fitting?

Gechmir Mar 3, 2007 01:08 PM

I dunno. I thought Method & Red as a pretty horrid attempt at a show. Was that a sitcom... >_>

ctu Mar 3, 2007 01:45 PM

This might only work if it was a mini series (as in no more then 3 eps if that, but that is a very big IF :tpg:

They pretty much did.

I just wonder if there will be plugs for Geico all over the place and if the gecko will make a cameo appearance?

xiaowei Mar 4, 2007 01:12 AM

I'm going to say that I would watch a show based off the Tiny House Geico ads. Look here

This one? Not so much.

parKbench Mar 4, 2007 08:34 AM

Besides "Heroes" and "How I Met Your Mother", I don't watch broadcast TV anyway. Let them put any crappy show on that they want. At least, it is not yet ANOTHER TV show about a dim witted and overwieght (but loveable) husband and his super smart, super hot wife. That seems to be the TV sitcom mold that needs to be broken.

Cirno Mar 5, 2007 05:51 AM

While I thought the commercials were funny as hell (well, the first two -- got stale after a while), I absolutely can not see this being a sitcom. I mean, I can, but doing so hurts my brain.

Prons Mar 5, 2007 06:41 AM

This will be good because Geiko is X and D.

I mean, why not they already made a videogame of it

Kick-ass game, if I may say so myself

Fun-fact: I first played that game on a friend's 3DO.
