Favorite Type of Villain to Kill

What type of villain do you enjoy going after? I don't mean those piddling random bad guys--although they are very handy for making money, getting items, and leveling up--I mean those villains that have their own special categories: Boss and Final Boss.

Now, in those we have the Animal, Betrayer, Looney-Tuney, Underling, "Animated Object", and "Peace-Maker"

I like to beat down the "Betrayer" myself. After all that time helping me, you go to the other side? To hell with you!

PiccoloNamek Feb 28, 2007 01:50 PM

Finally getting the "Despicable" guy (e.g. Algus) always feel good.

Leknaat Feb 28, 2007 01:53 PM

I would consider "despicable" part of Looney-Tuney, myself. But, I can see if someone can add it to the poll.

No hate for the whiny would-be victim-of-fate pretty boy villains (Kuja, Sephiroth, Vyers/Mid-Boss, Joachim and Mathias from LoI)?

I love administering a smackdown of biblical proportions against any moron who walks up to my party, kicks the crap out of my leader, and then is able to make every female character swoon by flipping his long hair, adjusting his glasses, or some other dumb bullshit like that. It feels oh-so-good to unleash screaming gelatinous flaming doom upon their blackest of souls at the end of the game. The added bonus of seeing Sephiroth with what appeared to be tears of blood running down his formerly-pretty-now-carved-to-hell-like-a-Thanksgiving-turkey bishie face was positively delightful.

(Disclaimer: The phrase "screaming gelatinous flaming doom" is a juxtaposition of "Screaming Temporal Doom" as spoken by Invader Zim and "Gelatinous Flaming Hell...Very Unfriendly" as penned by former GFF member Sanguis Deus. All phrases are property of their original holders. Please don't sue me. The More You Know.)

(Disclaimer 2: Goddamn bishounen.)

Looney-Tuney, if Luca Blight falls under that. I know he wasn't the last boss, but hot DAMN was he a badass villain. I enjoyed killing him, since it was so wonderfully drawn out.

Then the mono-a-mono duel to end it all? Gorgeous <3 Friend-turned-Foe is a little cliche` to me, but wuteva... Giving an evil, crazy prick his just desserts is awesome if delivered properly, ie: Suiko II.

You must be thinking of something very different than I, then. Algus is hardly Looney-Tuney. I'll never forget the dialogue between he and Miluda.

Quote:

Miluda: Who do you think we are? We're not your animals! We're human, just like you! Have you ever been hungry? With only soup to eat for months? Why do we suffer? Because you nobles deprive us of our rights to live!
Algus: Human? Humph, Ridiculous! From the minute you were born you had to obey us. From the second you were born you were our animals.
Miluda: That's nonsense! Who decided all this! That's ridiculous!
Algus: It is the will of Heaven!
Miluda: In Heaven? God would never allow such a thing. All are equal in His eyes! He'd never let this happen! Never!
Algus: Animals have no God!

So, wouldn't Algus be the "Peace-Maker"?

NeoBelhelmel Feb 28, 2007 10:05 PM

I'm thinking that Algus was more of a Betrayer since he was in your party for a while. He was a total craphat when he was, though (spamming your very limited item supply in that first battle where he joins you...) That was fun as hell to rain death on him.

I had fun fighting the Turks, though. The repetition made it seem that yes, people besides you could in fact level up.

Summonmaster Feb 28, 2007 10:21 PM

What do recurring groups that aren't quite underlings, but their own distinct entity, fall under? The reason is I love the fact that in addition to the bosses, you kept fighting 3 groups in Wild Arms 3 over and over again: 1) the Schrodingers, 2) Janus and team, and 3) the Prophets. Well I guess the first two were more like rivals, while the prophets were underlings. While they weren't flat out villains, they certainly weren't on your side for the most part.

I guess I like rival battles since the point is that they either intend to be a test of your strength, and neither side really loses until a final confrontation, if ever (eg. Pokemon >_>, General Beatrix, Delita). I guess nothing I've mentioned so far falls under the villain category explicitly, but they're not quite your allies or neutral parties either.

I guess if I had to absolutely pick from the list, I would say Looney-Tuney. Beating up on psychos like Kefka and Yunalesca is very satisfying when you stop their chaotic plans to kill the party for fun.

No. Hard Pass. Feb 28, 2007 10:35 PM

Algus was a betrayer, and that's why it gets my vote. Fucking ponce.

Stop Sign Feb 28, 2007 11:05 PM

Honestly? I get most satisfaction defeating bosses that hold rare items.

That's not on the list, so at the risk of sounding like a parrot, I say Algus and other betrayers. I personally got the most satisfaction out of defeating him, out of all the RPG villains I can name off the top of my head.

The bosses that you fight a few times throughout the game can sometimes be interesting. I like seeing them using different abilities against your party each time you meet. Another villain type I like fighting against is the betrayer since there's actually a connection to him or her instead of just a random boss.

Do you mean the "surprise" boss or optional boss? I really never considered those. Although sometimes those repeat bosses have rare items, too.

I like recurring villain too. For me the most memorable was Gilgamesh out of Final Fantasy V. Whenever he came up, I got all pumped and stuff. Plus he had awesomemusic with him that I liked. =p

Muzza Mar 2, 2007 07:13 PM

Cliché answer: "Betrayer". Simply put, it just feels so satisfying destroying them, and not only in RPGs. Lance in GTA: VC is still one of my most hated characters today. :D

The number of betrayers in RPGs...oh, the list is endless. A very deceitful genre indeed.

A close second would be the "Animated Object": they're always entertaining and fun to destroy. :3:

I chose "Betrayer," but only a certain kind of betrayer. I enjoy fighting the friend who still believes in the same "ideals" as the main character, but has a twisted notion of how to attain those ideals. For example, someone who truly wants world peace, but thinks that it can only be brought about by waging a war that weakens nations to the point they can no longer wage war. It could be argued, I supposed, that these are "lunatics." However, I'm thinking more of the misunderstood crusader who thinks they are trying to do right, and can put forth a reasoned, logical argument for their actions, though most wouldn't agree with them.

I feel that when this kind of antagonist is put up as a foil character against the protagonist, it tends to force the main character to be less "cliche" when it comes to their motives and character development...

Klaus Mar 8, 2007 08:57 AM

A few years ago I would of picked betrayer. I hated Jowy in Suikoden 2 and Delita in FFT, now I see where they were coming from so it doesn't bother me now.

Algus is different, I understand where he comes from. I feel slighty guilty about killing him but he is so unreasonable.

Luca Blight is the most awesome fight ever though so I picked looney tooney.
