Fullmetal Alchemist: Manga edition

Well, a new chapter has been released by Evil Genius recently, and although the qualiy is only so-so, it's good enough for now (I'm buying the french releases anyway).

Chapter 56
Spoiler:
It looks like Wrath is having a firm grip on the Elrics and Mustangs team. Gluttony died, but it's not known if "Father" will revive him or not. the new Greed is pretty cool, and it looks like Ling's still trying to get the upper hand. This chapter also has some rather funny scenes, like Ed calling Winry, and the Fuhrer stabbing Al (I don't know why but I laughed). I'm looking forward to the congrontation between Scar and Marco.

How do they compare to ZOMG Fruit Tree Alchemist 's release?

Spoiler:
Gluttony's dead, just like I thought. Curiously, Father seems intent on recreating him with his memories intact contrary to what happened to Greed/Ling. The lack of loyalty of the previous Greed is probably the reason his memories are missing. Father doesn't want to repeat that mistake again.
The whole Father vs. the Elrics thing has wrapped up surprisingly "peacefully", no great battle, no exposition on who/what Father really is... just a shower and a little chat with Wrath & Roy. And an Ishvarian is about to meet another alchemist veteran from the war.

Chapter 57 in about a week, looking forward to it...

I'm sort of curios where the Anime diverges from the Manga (I'm also curious as to where I can find the manga, but whatever). I found the ending to the anime, while decent, lacking in some ways. Plus I heard Pride and Wrath in the manga are totally different people!

Gechmir Mar 2, 2006 10:15 PM

The manga stops focusing so damn much on the philosopher's stone, moreso focusing on getting Al his body back. The anime goes a complete opposite direction after one point. The little boy Homunculus and the two women (sloth and the other gal who seems to be head bad guy) aren't even in the manga.

The manga is infinitely better than the anime. I fail to see why it gets so much acclaim. In the manga, Ed is much wiser, a better fighter, and the brotherly relationship is much more tolerable as opposed to always emo and crap.

Lust was in it, but
Spoiler:
Mustang killed her in chapter 39.

The problem with the anime was that it, at least for me, went downhill after the introduction of Wrath (who is NOT in the manga), after that, some things didn't make anymore sense, the main villain was unbelievable and didn't get nearly enough screentime, and the last 6-7 episodes felt really rushed.

The manga is much slower, for example, we still haven't seen all of the homunculi, and they are different than the anime ones. The main villain is more believalbe since they introduced him earlier than in the anime, and there are characters like Ling who don't even appear in the anime. My advise is to follow the manga.

Gechmir Mar 3, 2006 09:03 AM

Spoiler:
Isn't the Fuhrer Wrath?

Peter Mar 3, 2006 09:46 AM

Gechmir:
Spoiler:
I was referring to Izumi's kid, who doesn't appear in the manga (thank god). I'm well aware that the Fuhrer is Wrath.

hikarub Mar 3, 2006 10:41 AM

In the anime, Wrath is.....
Spoiler:
.....the kid who is supposed to be Izumi's child.

In the manga, Wrath is.....
Spoiler:
.....the Fuhrer.

Yes, I agree that the manga is much better in terms of storyline and character development. It sure doesn't seem to show any signs of stopping, that's for sure! I can't wait for chapter 57 either.

On a side note, I didn't know Evil Genius was still doing FMA. I was pretty sure they said they were gonna stop doing it. I get my FMA fix from ZOMG FTA.

Mmm, FMA manga~~

Have you guys seen the cover for volume 13? Awesome shit, man (it's a bit spoilerish though):

http://community.livejournal.com/hag...3.html?#cutid1

As for the current stuff (chapter 56 onwards):

Spoiler:
Greed!Ling is really awesome. I love how he's still there. Hopefully he doesn't die! I also want a Wrath vs. Greed re-match (especially since this new Greed will have Ultimate Shield + Ling's swordarts *heart*)

I wonder who the new Gluttony will be though. I can't imagine any of the current characters as a Homunculus, but, at the same time, I can't imagine Arakawa-sensei to use the whole 'let's-introduce-a-new-character-and-then-make-that-person-a-Homunculus!' idea again. =/

And it seems as though Roy's getting closer and closer to finding out who killed Hughes...

But I seriously can't wait for the Scar and Marco scene. Omigod I wonder what'll happen *__*;;

Gechmir Mar 3, 2006 11:13 PM

Spoiler:
They made mention that most homunculi were born that way, I thought o.o Ling being turned into one is an exception of sorts. Knowing how this is, they won't get the time to resurrect Lust & Gluttony I don't think. Ed & Al are gonna probably start kicking more ass and hinder the bad guys =o

hikarub Mar 4, 2006 12:38 AM

Actually, Bradley was "made" the same way. He explains how it happened while holding Roy in custody in his office.

UltimaIchijouji Mar 4, 2006 05:50 AM

Spoiler:
With the manga coming to a close likely sometime in the next two years, I agree that the Homunculi won't be reborn. Rebirthing Greed was quite the plot twist, and for integrity I doubt Arakawa would pull the same trick twice. Things are finally starting to boil down, with Al's body waiting at the gates and Ed and Al meeting Father. Now we just need to find out who Pride is and the curtains to the finale can begin to raise.

Peter Mar 4, 2006 06:10 AM

Spoiler:
Don't forget about Sloth, the big guy who's digging a hole under Central. We still don't know what's up with that. As for Homunculi ressurections, I doubt that we'll see more, although I'd personally love to see Lust back, but it'll just drag the story. Besides that, Greed's ressurection was kinda logical. Ling wanted to do everything to get his hands on the philosophers stone, so I figured that he'd accept Greed on his offer.

Spoiler:
In one of the recent chapters, Father mentioned Sloth. I think I remember him talking about him being "punished," so maybe he's a bad child like Greed was. We should find out more about him soon though, as now we know Arakawa hasn't forgotten about him.

Perhaps this topic should be specifically for spoilers, since the manga is different, and you probably won't go through this thread unless you've read the manga.

Kaiten Mar 4, 2006 09:15 PM

Could someone tell me where the manga diverges from the anime so I don't have to recap? It helped me immensely when I started reading Naruto manga again.

Gechmir Mar 4, 2006 09:47 PM

Almost from the beginning. The anime hardly follows the manga even in the beginning. Originally, the first whole arc is just Ed & Al kicking ass. Not them acting emo about their mom (which happens in the anime).

Pick up the manga from the beginning and read it through. Don't try picking up in the middle somewhere.

Does anyone know where online I can buy the manga from? I live in Australia and I only got into anime and manga recently so if anyone can tell me where I can find it I'd really appreciate it.

Btw I heard a story that after season 2 in the anime the writer for the anime changed and it went in a completely different path from the manga. Does anyone know how true this is?

Read.

The post above you states that from the get-go the anime is pretty different from the manga. There are similar points, but for the most part they're two completely different universes.

Peter Mar 5, 2006 06:08 AM

Spoiler:
I must have missed that reference to Sloth. I really want to know just what he has to do beneath Central, but I guess that it'll be a while until we find out what the "Father"'s plans are.

I think we should keep the spoiler tags:
-Not everyone is following the scanlations, some prefer to buy the tanks so we'll still spoil them.
-People who watch the anime and get interested in the manga will be spoiled.

The manga is licensed by VIZ Media and can be ordered from their store online. Alternatively, you can ask any local bookshops to order them for you (you may need to pay a deposit). Just click the link:

They have so far just 6 volumes out at the moment.

The Plane Is A Tiger Mar 10, 2006 04:47 PM

Chapter 71 was released by ZOMGFTA today, huzzah!
Spoiler:
We finally get to see how homonculi are created when there's no human subject, and it isn't pretty. Father giving "birth" to Gluttony through his chest is pretty weird, and brings even more questions about what exactly Father is.

Scar and Marco's meeting went about how I figured it would go, except I thought Marco would be a bit less desperate to die. He seemed fairly calm and collected the last time we saw him talking to Envy, but I guess it HAS been several weeks/months since then.

The thing that I'm most curious about is the array on Hawkeye's back. It's Roy's fire array in the middle with all the triangles and salamander, but with more stuff surrounding it. It kind of reminds me of the array Ed found in the Xerxes ruins that was an alchemy array but with more symbols added. Hawkeye has obviously had the tattoo for a long time since there are scars over the top of it, but what use would a non-alchemist have for it?

Hao Mar 10, 2006 05:46 PM

Excellent, a new chapter released & scanlated in less than 24 hours.

Arakawa does it again. A lot of stuff happening and another plottwist ending to have us agonising for another month. I think the entire FMA fanbase exploded after seeing that last page :D

Spoiler:
About that last page: WTF?!! A gigantic, scarred array tatoed on her back and she never told us? Why would a non-alchemist need it anyway? So many questions...
Great events :
-Finally the travellers from the East meet, shame Dr. Knox had to break it up.
-Gluttony is back, more or less. Father sure looks happy sitting on his throne.

hikarub Mar 10, 2006 08:49 PM

OMG, you guys mean chapter 75, right? Not 71.... :D

Yeah, I gotta download this as soon as I get home!!!

The Plane Is A Tiger Mar 10, 2006 08:52 PM

Haha, actually I mean 57! When I typed that I must have confused it with Bleach, since I just finished watching ep. 71 of that during lunch today. ^^;

EDIT:

Just noticed this!
Spoiler:
I thought this was already pretty much cleared up by the earlier conversation between Marco and Envy. Father is conquering other countries and Sloth is digging the tunnel to create a gigantic alchemy array to use millions of people as Philosopher's Stone ingredients.
