Carlos Mencia vs Joe Rogan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsq1uTLBHBc

HOLY CRAP. It's about damn time. Mencia is not funny to me, and watching that video was just great. He's trying to replicate Dave Chappelle's success, which won't happen.

I guarantee that if Chappelle was still on Comedy Central, Mencia would still be fighting to get his show.

I'm not all that big on Joe Rogan, but anyone who informs Mencia of what a twat he is deserves accolades in my book.

That, and they're worried about him using his power in "Hollywood" to have them black balled for talking badly about him. But in private, they talk about it. A LOT.
It's a huge problem at the comedy store, to the point where some really good comics are refusing to go onstage if he's there watching the show, and others have a signal system to alert the guy onstage that Carlos has walked into the room.
It's really THAT BAD.

I fucking hate Carlos Mencia.

Dane Cook doesn't have his own show on Comedy Central. He's had a few specials, sure, but the bullshit isn't nearly on the level that Carlos demands.

Mucknuggle Feb 19, 2007 01:42 AM

Rogan has since been banned from the Comedy Store and was dropped by his agent. The MMA community (Joe Rogan is a commentator for Ultimate Fighting Championships) has been following the story closely since it happened.

And he's been in a few movies.

Now I watched that clip, and they accuse of Mencia stealing material from this Jewish comic, name escapes me at the moment, and while the topic is the same, which is a very prominent topic in the news and hard to avoid, it's presented differently. Though I suppose the fact the punchline is the same that it calls for a rip off, right?

That clip didn't convince me of anything. Carlos Mencia has his moments and the one thing that I don't like is the fact that he recycles jokes. His jokes are based on observational racial stereotypes which anyone can and has used. Now if it was a more specific and narrow joke use, then sure they could cry foul. But until they actually have more documented evidence besides the common topical issues that many, many comics go over numerous times, I'm highly skeptical.

As far as the Ari Shaffir bit goes, a joke based on something in the news, stand-up etiquette goes something like this: a comedian goes on before you and does a bit, and it's a lot like a bit you were going to do. Even if you think your version is better, you drop it.

This is why every comedian is not accused of stealing jokes, you only hear about three comedians who have done it: Mencia (from several sources, as shown in the video), Dane Cook (who's stolen from Louis CK), and Denis Leary (who ripped off Bill Hicks). Ari opened for Mencia, Cook was attending shows where Louis CK performed in Boston, and Denis Leary was friends with Bill Hicks.

Rogan's stand-up is never gonna set the world on fire, but I think he's done the comedy world a huge service by calling out Mencia. He's the only comic I can think of who could pull it off; he can afford to lose some stand-up work because of the cash he earned on Newsradio, Fear Factor, and the UFC gig; he has credentials from doing years of stand-up; he's successful enough in his own right to not be accused of jealousy. It all just fell into place, and it's about goddamn time.

Bradylama Feb 19, 2007 02:30 PM

Right, you'd have to be a fucking idiot to do the same joke as another Comedian. They can, however, do the same bit, which is what everyone is accusing Ned of doing. Did you notice when Bobby Lee was about to go into his story about Mencia stole a part of his routine? He didn't describe the joke in its entirety, he described the idea. That's because Mencia didn't steal it verbatim, he stole the bit.

The proof is in the pudding. If almost every comic in the business thinks Mencia is a thieving hack, something's wrong.

rockthepartay Feb 19, 2007 04:24 PM

I don't like Joe Rogan, but I have a ridiculous amount of hatred for Carlos Mencia.

His comedy act is ostensibly unique, but if you watch him enough you can tell that he is a farce. I can't believe people haven't realized this yet.

The only thing that Carlos Mencia is clever at is tricking everyone into thinking that he is funny.

Bradylama Feb 19, 2007 06:41 PM

There are no tricks involved here, people are idiots.

Yeah, but at least Dane Cook jokes have made me crack a smile here and there. At least before the over-exposure.

However a Joe Rogan/Carlos Mencia feud is like watching a boxing match at the Special Olympics.

WolfDemon Feb 19, 2007 09:30 PM

I liked Mencia before he got famous. I saw his half-hour Comedy Central Presents show that came on several years before Chappelle's Show's debut and thought it was pretty funny. But once Mind of Mencia came out, he got old really fast. I don't know what everyone finds so funny about "I'm an obnoxious racist who isn't afraid to speak my mind! Let me demonstrate several times!" And I'm gonna punch the next person at work who says "Dee dee dee" in the neck.

As for stealing material, you'd have to be a moron not to see that Mind of Mencia is Chappelle's Show with a Mexican.

Same. His show is ridiculously stupid and it blatantly copies off of Chappelle. I remember seeing a bit where he criticizes how white parents discipline their kid (time out) and it's the exact same sketch Chappelle did on his show. All he does is try to be controversial by using cliche racial jokes that people have been using for ages.

I've never heard of Joe Rogan being a comedian though. Only seen him in Fear Factor and UFC.

Ever watch News Radio?

Lizardcommando Feb 20, 2007 01:30 AM

This is pretty new as far as I can tell. It's from a radio talk show.

Is that the show they wrote about on digg?

Carlos Mencia went on the Mikey radio show in San Diego to discuss the Joe Rogan incident. Carlos discusses the fight and starts talking about the new bits hes doing. The new bit he is discussing is a stolen bit from another radio show. The DJ announces Carlos is banned from the Mikey show now for using stolen material.

Yeah, that's the clip. Pretty hilarious, though I wish the DJ had actually called him on it during the interview instead of explaining things afterward.

I've watched some horrible stuff on TV while bored or half asleep, but Carlos Mencia always sends me diving for the remote. His act never changes, he seems almost incapable of getting through his own sketches without cracking up, and it's about as far from intelligent comedy as you can get. Not to mention how much that "dee dee dee" line grates on my nerves.

If this story keeps growing and kills his career, good riddance.

BucPride Feb 20, 2007 04:36 AM

Carlos Mencia a hack? Since when?

As most have stated above me, Mencia's show is a waste of time and I have seen 2 episodes and laughed once. His stolen material isn't even that good to begin with, most of it that is. He's a third-rate Dave Chappelle, and I only wish Dave would come back so Comedy Central would bump off his show. Props to Rogan for calling him on his bullshit.

rocketdog Feb 20, 2007 07:51 AM

It seems that everyone I know hate him.
So why is he on the air? Is it just so he gives edge in the Mexican demographic for Comedy Central. ==;
