Hard Sell.
 

It takes a lot for me to be interested enough for me to buy anything for myself. I'm not cheap but something has to really prove itself useful before I drop any amount of money on it, save for Reese's Peanutbutter Cups (no pun intended).

Are you a Hard Sell or an Impulse Buyer? What were the last three purchases you made (for yourself), how much did you spend on each one, and when were they? In this case, multiple items upon one transaction can be considered one purchase.

1) Between the Buried and Me album in June 2005. $16
An old friend of mine, you guys new him as Divest, introduced me to them. I loved it. Their music is a little difficult to find so it took me a good 6 months or more to come across it in stores.

2) Gibson SG in November 2004. $3,000
My Les Paul fell onto hard times after I introduced it to my ceiling fan. I forgot it was there as I proceeded to raise my guitar vertically whilst rocking out in my bedroom.

3) Digital Camera in August 2004. $300
Just something for graphic design and camera whoredom.

Last three things I bought were two sausage rolls at lunchtime for £1.40, about £40 worth of petrol on the way to work this morning and a packet of 20 Marlboro Lights somewhere in between for about £5.10.

All of them were pretty much impulse buys.

I'm a hard sell. I have to be convinced that it's a good product before I'll buy it. I may contemplate it beforehand, but I won't actually decide about buying until I have a good idea as to the quality of the product.

Oh man. I am an impulse spender in the WORST WAY. I can spend money like a rock star. Too bad we don't have the income to match!

The unfortunate thing (well, I guess maybe it's a good thing) is that I'm married to a saver.

The last three things I bought were:
1. Knitting supplies - $38
2. New church clothes for my sons - $130ish
3. Plane tickets to Flagstaff, AZ - $1,600

Holy shit ciggarettes are exspensive in England. 5 pounds isnt that like equivalent to 9-10 US dollars? I can get a pack of Indian cigarettes for 65 cents.

Im just usually buy what I need. Say Im hungry, I'll go find something to eat. Cheap of course though. I try not to buy in excess.

Just when I thought you couldn't rock any harder. I've been trying to get a scarf knitted for me but I haven't had a single girlfriend who knows how. A serious deal breaker in my book. I'm interested in your wares.

I'm a mix of both as it depends on the location of the moon or something. I don't know, quite often if it's a big purchase or a reasonable chunk of money I make sure I can properly afford it and weight the pros and cons, but then sometimes if I want something I just get it. I can be so impulsive sometimes it's almost dangerous. But hey, what's the point of having money if you can't spend it.

As for the last three things I bought, good question. I bought a Bounty on Monday, did my weekly shopping on Saturday, and before that probably was picking up a copy of Howl's Moving Castle on DVD.

As a matter of fact, I haven't. As a matter of fact, I'm not going to. And what's this talk about my Government. My Government is dead. Democracy was overthrown and slain two years ago.

i'm a mix of both, last things i bought was food for my breakfast/lunch/dinner over the next few days though i'm not cheap about where i buy my food out of habit ^^; i bought about 10 items and it came to £20. before that was.. my train tickets to and from london this weekend, £47 because i booked late, and £4 for shampoo and conditioner.

If I'm interested in something that's over $100, I tend to do some research before I invest in buying it. Being in college has made me set a budget at times, so I think about whether I really need an item if it costs over $40.

That'd be me. I'll buy almost anything I like as long as it's cheap.

Just the other day in a Pawn Shop I spent $70 on Misc. Posters and my third copy of Suikoden and 2nd of FFVII, and FFVII and IX. Each were $5.

I'm the kind of person that waits for price drops on almost everything. I will NEVER spend $50 on a game, ever. I will never buy a $20 CD because in some time I can just find it for $8 used somewhere and I'll never buy a movie. Ever. I'll wait for the movie channels to play them.

I'm a Grandia junkie but I would not pay $50 for a copy of Grandia III so I waited till a used one came in to use 25% off on it. Got it for like $37 a few days after launch.

Ignoring obvious planned expenses, such as meals, my last 3 purchases:

(1) Yamaha 2330 Shepherd's Crook Cornet - I've been waiting a few years to find a good deal one one of these, and I snagged it in fantastic shape for $150 shipped off of eBay. Very much researched and thought-out, not impulse.

(2) IBM Thinkpad A21m Laptop - This was pretty impulsive. I caught wind that the local campus salvage store was selling off some old stock of Laptops, and for $130, I figured.... what the heck, it'll give me something to do in classes. Works great, runs Linux perfectly, and I'm rather pleased, although this WAS impulsive.

(3) Music CD - Definatley not impulsive. I spent about a month researching and tracking down this disc. It's the best-mastered, best sounding recording of some of the definitive performances of some of the best songs of all time. Best CD I've ever purchased or heard.

No, I'm not very impulsive at all. I think before I buy. Well, except for occasions like dates. I can be impulsive there.

If it says "Holst" and "Fennell" on it, you know it's going to kick ass.

I can be impulsive. The last impulsive thing I bought was a 3D World magazine at 15 bucks. Sure expensive but it's worth it considering you get a CD full of stuff and some very worthwhile articles that are invaluable.


I'm sort of a hard sell and an impulsive buyer. Basically when I shop I generally know what I'm looking for. If I have money to burn and no idea what to spend it on, then I become a little bit more impulsive. However, for larger things, I take my time with them, or at least try to.

I'm the worst nightmare of any society based on heavy consumption of goods and/or services. Seriously. I never buy anything, mostly because I never seem to feel like buying anything I don't absolutely need. Computer hardware and software is likely the only exception, and I tend to only buy it when absolutely needed (for example, when tired of using a 300W PSU that randomly fails and might catch fire), reluctantly at that. I use a CD-RW instead of a USB memory stick because the latter would have cost me $15~$20 for a 128MB. I'll admit I might be a bit greedy, but that doesn't account for everything. Often I'll get stuff as gift and, while it might be nice stuff, I'm not too excited since I feel I don't need it. "Buying" just doesn't seem to be something I even consider doing if I don't already have a reason to do so. For example, I might buy a game if it seems nice, often after a little, uhm, "pre-testing", but never go to a store just because I have money to spend.

Ah they try to do that too, but thats why I love the Native Americans here :biggrin:

How much have you spent on blank CDs that were written to simply because you didn't spend 15 bucks on flash memory?

Anyways, I guess I am located in the middle ground. The last three things I bought have been pretty pedestrian I suppose. I will not include lunches.

Yesterday - 12 pack of pepsi, q-tips, and scrubbing sponges to do dishes with - $10. I ran out of pepsis sunday and have needed both q-tips and sponges for two weeks, so not impulsive at all.

Monday - paid my power bill - $150. It included the bill for 3 weeks of february at the previous apartment, 2 weeks of february for the current apartment {I overlapped power service just in case I didn't move exactly when I expected} and the $40 connection fee for the new place.

Last week - Shadow Hearts From the New World and preordered and fully paid for Suikoden V - $85. I have known about them both for a while so that wasn't an impulse buy.

If you take out the bill, then I bought Forza for xbox used a couple of weeks ago for like $17.

1) German manufactured HW45 .22 Cal Pellet Gun. Purchased November 2005 for $350. Basically I just wanted to shoot stuff and not have to get a license.

2) Chinese B4-2 .22 Cal Pellet Rifle + 3 -16x45 Scope Purchased December 2005 for $175. Basically again wanted to shoot stuff only this time with a scope.

3) 1050 RH Carbon steel replica Arigorn sword Purchased January 2006 for $300. Basically wanted see how long it'd take me to chop down a tree with a handforged properly made sword and also chop... other stuff. AMAZINGLY they screwed up the order and I got another sword FOR FREE in the package so basically I got this for free.

I buy TONS of stuff others would consider useless.

I'm a hard sell on just about anything... except DVDs, which I have a horrible weakness toward just getting on impulse.

My last three, non-food, purchases were all DVDs as well:
1. Howl's Moving Castle: Nothing like Miyazaki goodness, and Disney gave the release great treatment. $19

2. Whisper of the Heart: Had never seen the movie before, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and the DVD set it came in was also nice. Plus it was on sale, so I can't argue. $16

3. Lupin the Third - Strange Psychokinetic Strategy: Had long heard about this movie, so I jumped at the chance to pick it up when first released. Wasn't exactly a film I can see myself watching anytime soon again, but not something I regret having in my collection all the same. $20
